I agree @Peanut , now .

15 years ago , I didn't think that way.
Wish I had. I did run 5 miles everyday.. now I got 2 new knees . I also have a defib/pacemaker.

So I guess as we get old er , our way of thinking changes.

Wonder if I woulda had to go thru getting 2 knees replaced if I hadn't done all that running 15-20 years ago.

Btw..love my new knees.

Jim
I never wanted to do five miles, but I figured that getting to where I could do one mile without much trouble would be healthy. I couldn't run a mile without stopping last November. I got to where I could do it, slowly, and it still hurt, but I could do it. I was never a runner anyway. My high school coach said he timed my 100 yard dash with a sundial...
I guess my middle aged body just isn't capable of running any more. Luckily, there's bikes, walking, hiking, and elliptical machines.

BTW, @Peanut - I don't care much for "societal norms" either. I'm just trying to strengthen my body as I enter turn 4 of my life. I want to be there when my daughter graduates and maybe get a chance to see a grandchild someday. And the way I was going, with my health problems, I wasn't going to make it...

I didn't mean to sound critical of choices made by others... just sharing how my warped mind works. When I was thirty five I was over weight, worked bizarre hours on two continents and my diet would have sent a billy goat to an early grave. Even when I was told to take up jogging by a doctor I refused... Instead I went to the Dojo down the street, studied Karate (got in my exercise while learning a skill) and learned far better eating habits with an eastern psychological bent.

I'm not into eastern philosophy, but a martial art would be wonderful to learn. I imagine the benefits to one's coordination, balance, and flexibility are tremendous. Unfortunately the nearest classes to me (tae kwondo) are 25 miles away...

Slowly building up my steps.
Key word there is slowly, sometimes I feel like it's turtle pace.
My first 5 k has be rescheduled for April.
Didn't feel like I would ready for the one 15 March@10am.
So rescheduled for 18th of April@10 am instead.
Some days the knee still feels tight, some days not so much.
Started working with ankle weights this week.
All the housework is finished for the week, except deep cleaning the bathroom.
Which is on my agenda for tomorrow.
Still have to set up medicine for next week.
Just been walking in the parks today.
Slowly building up my steps,distance.
Hopefully will walk another 1000 steps tonight before bed.
My goal this week was 2000 steps each day.
Didn't make it, but it's okay.
Weather here has been nice, warm when the winds weren't gusting out of the north.

My view on jogging... my knees and feet have only so many steps in them for my lifetime. The same holds true for my heart. It only has so many beats in it for my lifetime. Earning a living, putting food on the table, enjoying friends and family... those are really good reasons to me. Tromping through woods and fields looking my medicines to hlep myself and others, another very good reason... Jogging around to lose weight, to attain some societal norm determined by others... not so much. If I want to lose weight I change my diet, saves all those steps and heart beats for things more important to me. ;) So I don't jog...

Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?

A: Your heart only good for so many beats, and that it... Don't waste on exercise. Everything wear out eventually. Speeding up heart not make you live longer; it like saying you extend life of car by driving faster. Want to live longer? Take nap.

I have studied two different styles (hapkido and Jujitsu) and found them both to educational and good for my body. I never achieved some high rank, but still found them to be very beneficial and added another depth to the Judo based fighting style we learn in the police academy. I went to a few TKD lessons some years later, did not personally care for it. Seemed less like a fighting style and more like a sporting activity. Just my 2 cents though.

my friend is in her late 60s. She told her cardiologist she liked lying down for a nap every afternoon. He said you go ahead and keep that up. You'll be dead in a year.

Not that you asked...
They say if you take supplements that potassium and magnesium should not be taken together.

My band teacher in high school was a TKD instructor. He said one of the appeals of it is that it's a bit less combative. He said it also stresses defensive aspects more than other martial arts. To reach his rank, which I believe was 9th black belt, he had to do primitive defensive weapon training with staff and some form of club. He was a fairly chubby, inoffensive looking middle aged man but he could stand on one leg and put his other foot above his head with ease, and his hand speed was frightening. Alas, he went away after having an extreme lapse of judgement concerning a 16 year old female student...

They save if a person quits smoking they would live ten years longer. Why would anyone want to live an extra ten years in a nursing home? ;) My attempt at humor.

I don't take any supplements. I would guess my problem is still being too fat and not having adequate strength in my glute muscles, which overloads my hamstrings...

well, go ahead and read the link I included. It is very short with to the point information. It doesn't mention you by name, but it says it is likely that diabetic patients would have muscle cramps. Likelihood of depletion of minerals causes muscle cramps too, and potassium and magnesium are very beneficial.

This isn't cramps. It's a pulled muscle, a slight tearing of the tissue. It doesn't go away like a cramp. I do suffer from cramping in my calf muscles on occasion, but staying well hydrated seems to keep it at bay.

Spikedriver, sorry to hear about the pulled muscle. Hope it heals quickly-- Rest Ice Compression & Elevation should help.
I see there are different opinions on how to live healthy-- it differs even among doctors. There's a total quack cardiologist in town who tells people to eat nut & berry diets & doesn't refer them to get more testing. He also dismisses a lot of people & the death rate is pretty high. My father might still be alive if not for that quack's malpractice. The cardiologist eats his nut & berry diet but he still had a heart attack.

I need to find some sort of low impact exercise. My problem with my heartrate going up is I lose oxygen because of prolapsed valves.

I found some frozen swordfish fillets in the freezer. They were vacuum sealed. Cooked one up with some lemon juice & salt but it had a very strong fishy smell. I presented to my mother, who said it smelled horrible & she didn't want to eat it. I concurred, but I hate the smell of fish to begin with. She sent me to McDonalds to get her a fillet of fish sandwich. I was heading out the door when she shouted my name & slightly startled me. Lost my balance just as one of the cats rubbed against my leg-- stepped wrong and almost twisted my ankle, and fell down halfway, but caught myself on the wall-- torqued my hip a bit. My mother apparently wanted me to come back inside through the front room, through the kitchen, & in to the room she was in to look at something on her computer screen. I told her I'd look at it later when I returned with the food. Trip to town was uneventful-- go the food & slightly raged at the idiot in front of me who was on the cellphone & not paying attention. Wouldn't pull up and was blocking the drive thru windows. I made sure to go around the person to avoid being stuck behind them once I got my food.

Since Mom isn't eating meat (other than fish) on Fridays, I'm going to make some four cheese tortollini tonight.

At the time a Dojo was about 10 blocks from my apartment... But I did look funny in the beginner class with a bunch of 7yrolds...

Jokes aside... I like to learn new things, always have. Changing the way I ate was my biggest take away from going there. But all the things you mentioned were also beneficial. The biggest satisfaction for me was exercise with a benefit other than just exercise.

I traveled so much in those years I bought a vhs tape on Tai Chi that I could play at hotels. Someone at the dojo suggested it for when I traveled... Simple exercise that I could do even when tired. I just looked... there are a boat load of Tai Chi dvd's on amazon...

@zannej bicycles are good low impact exercise, as are elliptical machines. I'm dying for warmer weather so I can get my bike back out and hit the trails!
I haven't been on a bike in over 30 years & I could never ride well. I've never had great balance- I also have nowhere to ride one. No bike trails or solid/stable enough ground here. An exercise bike would probably work if we had room for one in the house.
I've heard of something called DDP Yoga (developed by Diamond Dallas Page from WWE) but haven't ever tried it. I heard it helped Mick Foley recover from some debilitating injuries. My brother goes on about it & says he got the videos and started it out but he's been slacking off as he doesn't have the space to lay out the mat since he made such a huge mess of the area near his room.

Jogging causes wrinkles (for reals, I'm not even being a smartA.) I like my bike too :) It's just almost warm enough. I actually thought about riding my bike down the lane to get the mail just to see if I could still pedal the thing. Seems like it's been forever. Also, it's still barely light when I get home now rather than dark when I leave and dark when I return. Light helps too.
We go have our taxes done tomorrow - big prayers for good news.

I'm too lazy to go back and search, but I think I remember your moving , and won't be here for a while..
am I nuts, or did I read that ?
How long you gonna be shunning us ? LOL.

Jim
Not moving yer?
Hope to find out Monday when I will be moving.
I was babysitting grand daughter and the money I received paid for luxury items like the Internet.
After grand daughter's mother stiffed me for over $200, I made the hard decision not to babysit for grand daughter's mother again until she got caught up on what she owed me. She refuses to pay what she owes.
So now I only watch grand daughter for my son when he works his 1 weekend a month.
And I refuse to watch his girl friends brats at all especially if I'm not getting paid for it.
My income is fixed.
Out of it I can pay for everything but Internet right now.
In 4 more months, I will have paid off my student loans in full.
Then will have a little bit of breathing room again.
Then I can afford the Internet again on my own.
I can go to the library and use their WiFi for nothing.
So I'm not shunning you guys, circumstances have changed that's all.
My income pays, rent, utilities, car payment, car insurance,Strawberry's needs(food, treats, and vet bills).
Had to give up date night for right now too.
Right now, I spend about $20 every two weeks for fresh items like produce.
But I have well stocked pantry and freezers so that saves money too.

Thursday was house cleaning day where I deep cleaned bathroom and toilets and did another load of washing and we washed dishes and cleared the kitchen.

Friday we did a little more work around the garden beds and weeded and mowed between the sweet potato and cucumber beds and DH vacuumed the whole home. We went on our date day at the RSL club and had a few soft drinks and then went to the pub to do a little more socialising and drank water. The toilet paper jokes were flying and people talking about what they could and could not get in the way of groceries.

This morning so far we have done nothing other than sit and blog and check the internet and DH has paid bills for the RSL club online. Just both having a day where we are finding it hard to get motivated.

Mo, I was trying to be funny with the shunning remark...I know you better than that.

How much are you paying for internet ?

Just curious.

I post my rides in the fitness thread, to keep track of how much exercise I'm getting on the bike. When it gets a bit warmer, you could do the same. You can keep me accountable for exercising or not...

I've not ventured over to that thread. I'm sure I'd be great at harassing folks, but also know how completely inconsistent I am when it comes to exercise. If mowing the lawn and vacuuming count as workouts, I'm good. Crunches - not so much (I do feel be when I do my sit-ups.) Maybe I'll mosey over there and stir something up :dancing:

We do have people who post work and chores (and dancing!) as workouts. So come on over. The more the merrier!

Maybe you're just tired and your systems are playing catch up. You two have been on the go a lot with all the flooding and extra yard work in addition to all that do do on a regular basis. You need a day of down time once in a while. Enjoy your day and the relaxing mode.
