My mom is visiting me, so tonight it's the olympics. I've been watching more tv this last month than ever before in my life, just in an effort to not think, I guess. Went all the way through Midsomer Murders and Father Brown series, working on Shetland now. It just seems to me that the Brits do the murder mystery so much better than we do...I like the music, the dark humor and the complicated plot lines.

I watched it once, probably in the late 90s, when it was on HBO or one of the other movie channels. I remember it being bad, but not as bad as it was this time. All those dance movies were bad. Urban Cowboy, Staying Alive, ugh...
I had to watch it when it first came out. Ex wife wanted to see it when we were still dating. That should have been a HUGE wake up sign. :dancing:

OK. After I picked and watched Ava and Close last night (action packed movies that my wife would not have enjoyed), the wife and I watched her pick tonight: "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood."

It was both a movie I wouldn't have picked to watch...and a very good movie. I recommend it.

It helped that I had read an article a couple years ago, about the true story the movie is based on. Apparently, Mr. Rogers really did have an amazing impact on the jaded journalist who was assigned to interview him. They became friends for years after.

[Aside: The subway scene made me sad, though...because it didn't seem to be something that would happen today. Present day society seems so much more coarse than that. Hopefully I am wrong.]

I think it's closed now. I was in Fort Worth years ago and we were not far from it but didn't go. I kind of regret that now.
I didn't realize that there was a Gilley's in the Dallas area. Events | Gilley's Dallas | United States It is a big place with 7 different venues for whatever your interest is.
The only interesting thing about Urban Cowboy was Gilley's Bar where part of the movie was filmed. I'd been to the bar right after the movie was released. Pasadena TX.
I've driven by Gilley's in Pasadena, TX, more than 40 years ago. It is east of Houston. I think Urban Cowboy helped that place out for a while, but it was a big and busy place before the movie came out.

Mickey Gilley is still alive, but not young.

Movie: New Order (for rent on Amazon Prime, $2.99). Class revolt unfolds during a marriage celebration in a rich household. Bad things start to happen.

My review:
  • Well done. Powerful. Depressing. Eye opening. Not for sensitive souls.
  • Be warned: Torture (including rape) is not graphic, but it definitely happens. Death is not graphic, but it happens...often.
  • As a prepper, I'm glad I watched, because I found it humbling...which is probably a good thing.
    • Collapse of society will not be fun, no matter how well prepared you are. (The "rich" people in this move are NOT well prepared...especially not mentally prepared.) Hope is used against people. Sometimes it is tough to know when all is lost.
    • Civilized, stupid, first-world, "that could never happen" behavior, in the midst of a collapsing society, is a great way to get you and your family into a world of hurt. Alertness is key. Ability to comprehend the capacity for evil in others is key.
    • Anarchy is likely to be quickly followed by an increase in government power, not a decrease.
  • Note: Spanish language. I watched with English subtitles.
Personal comment: Thank goodness for the Second Amendment--for the US. There was no widespread armed populace in this movie, which, of course, means only the bad guys were armed (criminals, rioters, military/police thugs). Things would have been a little different if ordinary, non-evil people were armed. (Although, the more technological society becomes, the less important the second amendment will become.)

My daughter is here visiting and we've watched a few movies.

Two nights ago was "Wish Dragon". Animated. More of a kids movie. Reasonably entertaining. Wouldn't be my first choice for adults only, but great for watching with grandkids.

Tonight was "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle". This is the first sequel to the original Robin WIlliams one. Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black and Kevin Hart were in this one, that came out in 2017. I found it funny and very entertaining. Lots of hilarious lines that fly by quickly in their banter. All the actors do a great job playing the part of someone quite different than they look. Jack Black especially. This is one I'd watch again.

Netflix: Cosmic Sin.

I thought with Bruce Willis, it might be good. No. It was truly an awful movie. He must be on hard times to accept scripts like this. Maybe he was doing someone a favor?

The dialogue was intolerable and droned on and on...and yet was disjointed and eye-rolling. I fast-forwarded through most scenes in which it looked like the people were talking. The budget was low...or they didn't use it well. Seemed like a youtube fanfic movie at times.

Do not watch this movie.

Hubbys bing watching The Big Bang Theory.
I am so entertained by The Big Bang Theory! I recently saw that someone cannot stand it. I think it is one of the funniest shows out there, all in reruns now. There are many of the scenes on YouTube, and much of the shows from over the years on there as well.

I tried watching the Daytona 500, but had to turn it off after about 15 minutes.
Since I don’t normally watch TV, I found all the ads excessive, annoying, and just plain not worth the aggravation.

Shackleton with Kenneth Branaugh.
I have enjoyed his stuff. Hamlet and "Much ado about nothing" i have enjoyed multiple times.

For the other Tolkien fans...

We recently discovered Nerd of the Rings on Youtube.

The Princess enjoys them as well so I can't binge watch them and have to wait until she had time.

Do you go to the first videos and work your way back to the most recent?

Last night we watched 'Glory". It's a movie about the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Infantry, good movie. I don't know why I had not heard about it, it was filmed in 1989.

It was a very interesting movie and very well done. If anyone hasn't seen it, I highly recommend it. It is streaming on Hulu for anyone who might have it.

A little history: The 54th Massachusetts Infantry.

Stumbled across a Charlie Chan movie on Prime.

I saw one about a month ago, hadn't seen one in decades. It was "The Great Dictator", I enjoyed it. It's a spoof on hitler, was written, acted, directed and produced by Chaplin in 1940.

I started watching "The Soprano's" a few days ago (dvd). I'm on season 3 now. There is noooothing on regular tv worth watching this time of year.

France 24 English on Youtube.

They actually are a pretty good international news channel, with none of the domestic US politics that you will find on CNN or FoxNews. Just lots of actual news. Interviews of experts, but they aren't experts on the payroll of the US Left or the US Right. It's actually pretty refreshing.

It live streams.
