Is that an outdoor fire box, or is it an indoor fireplace? It amuses me that most fireplaces in the US aren't set up for cooking at all. We are a couple generations dependent on electricity here. Most don't even know how to cook over a fire anymore.

This is outdoors, at the house we bought it's indoors and I'd say about 70% of the households have some type of one.

baked pork chops...scalloped potatoes with cheese.and then a 3rd item if we have a good left over in the fridge..

15 bean soup with stewed tomatoes and chunks of venison with some secret spices. Add a big ol' slab of homemade cornbread and a tall glass of ice cold whole milk.

I got to thinking about shepards pie thanks to you guys! I ended settling on homemade chicken pot pie. It has about ten more minutes in the oven, and ten more to cool a little. I'm drooling from the smell right now. I just finished cleaning the kitchen and poured a glass of wine. I'm pretty much done for the day!

Last night I made pepper steak. (wife was sick, so didn't feel like cooking, and I had to go to the store anyhow)....

Store had chuck steak on sale for like $3 something a pound. Cut that up into strips and sauteed it a bit with some garlic salt, pepper, and soy sauce and olive oil.

Sauteed some sliced peppers and onions the same way.

Meanwhile, had some beef gravy going (I also add a can of cream of mushroom with garlic soup, and some soy sauce, and just a tiny bit of merlot sauce).

Put the sliced peppers and onions, and beef strips into the gravy, and let it simmer while prepping the egg noodles. Serve it over the noodles, and yum......

soft shell tacos, last night.and 2 more now..then it'll be chicken strips and potato scallops with fiesta cheese soup for supper

Coffee Rubbed Venison
It has been "rested" in foil after grilling, so it's evenly cooked throughout (on the medium side of medium rare)

Tastes every bit as good as it looks, and then some!
CoffeRubVenison_zpsxhbidj20.jpg

Meat:
Small end of deer backstrap
Marinade:
Hoover Sauce (marinated 3 hours)
Rub:
6 cloves of garlic, minced or 1 rounded tablespoon of prepared minced garlic.
2 tablespoons of ground coffee
2 heaping tablespoons of brown sugar (light or dark)
1 tablespoon of salt
2 teaspoons of black pepper
2 rounded teaspoons of Italian herb mix
Mix with a fork.

Pretty simple:
Cut the small end of a deer backstrap into two equal length pieces.
Marinate in Hoover Sauce for 3 hours (have never tried it without the Hoover Sauce)
Drain
Rub well, leaving a thick paste of rub on the meat
Grill on medium heat to between rare and medium rare on a meat thermometer
Let rest in foil for 5 minutes.

Never tried the coffee on any meat before, but it sounds interesting!

I don't know if it's just the coffee, or everything put together, but what it does to venison and duck is amazing. I've seen a number of coffee rub recipes online, and the only thing they all have in common is coffee, salt, and some sort of pepper.

Tonight I opened a can of potatoe ham chowder and threw in a can of clams to the pot. It was quick and easy and helped warm me up after being outside all day.

McCormick makes this Zesty Herb marinade....3 packets of that, and 4 chicken breasts I cooked on the Foreman grill (tenderized and sat in the marinade for a while).... Then, cut it up, and added it to a nice garden salad (cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers, onion, croutons, shredded cheese), using the marinade as dressing.... Yum...

Big pot of beef roast slow cooked, then added small red and white potatoes, carrots, onion, green pepper and celery, along with loads of seasonings and cooked for another hour. Oh, and jiffy sweet cornbread to go with it. I'm almost in pain from eating so much! I'll have beef stew for the next four days, yeah! No doubt why I have clogged arteries.
