I get advertisements in my e-mail. Most are from SAFEWAY Grocery. It will have ads that say, "Clip this COUPON".

How do you do that......???
I went through that with my grocer and a rewards program. Campbell's Chunky soup was on sale, 2 for $4, and 4 for $5 for program members. I punched in phone number at checkout to get my reward points, but didn't get the 4/$5 deal.

Assistant at checkout said I had to clip the coupon. I'm like "What??" You mean I have to print it and clip it, then bring to store? Are there store coupons in a brochure to clip??

Turns out I needed the app, or be logged-in to my account on PC and hit the "clip" button for it to be applied to my account and get the savings.

Clipping coupons ain't what it used to be.

You will have to create an account on the store's app. There is a section on the app for coupons. If it's one you want to use you will hit "clip"! If you shop in person at the store they will ask for your phone number at the register, your account will come up, the coupon (s) you clipped will be applied. If you do an online order the app or website will ask if you want to apply coupons, click or hit yes and the coupo(s) you "clipped" will be applied!

Yep...hit the clip button when signed into your account...then at store when checking out use your phone number on key pad or scan members card so anything digital is deducted while checking out...never done it on a phone...just a pc.
That's cool, I hate apps. Anything that can be done with an app, can be done without it - for the most part. And, if it can't be done without the app..... screw it, I ain't going there.

What a pain in the arse. Just give me the GD sale price. I don't have time for this BS. But the wife has learned how to play the grocery store game though.
here in my area they dont even send out weekly sale paper....they saving money..most people dont get a real newspaper any longer so its about pointless to do so...everyone uses phone or computer nowadays...it weird to me as well..but it is reason for it and i see why.

i yielded this month and paid my electric for first time via paperless....i am a dinosaur writing check for it each month...i gotta be honest..it was easier and faster and cheaper too.

I prefer Fred Meyers (aka KROGER). You get a plastic card and when you checkout........if it is on sale you get the sale price on all things you bought, if they were on sale.
YES.....on sale prices...but for the extra special digital coupons you need to clip them so they are in your account...when you swipe the card you get regular sale items you bought plus any digital coupons applied as well.

Another problem with SAFEWAY is they want my phone number at check-out. I politely ask, "WHICH ONE". I have at least three.

SAFEWAY also has a goofy thing that the end of every month they wipe any unused discounts away.
not a problem...or shouldnt be...use phone number you signed up the account with...thats all thats needed.

I feel you're pain........as others have said, you need to sign up for an online account (either on your phone or PC) that includes a phone number and email. You go thru the ad and click on those you want. It should then show that you've clipped that coupon. Then at the register, you enter that phone number in the key pad and it should take all discounts off your purchase.

I have always viewed this 'store membership & rewards program' as a way to track your purchases and it stops you from going thru multiple times to get more than the limit. Example.......2lbs cheese for $2, limit 1.........with this digital coupon stuff, you can only get 1 since all purchases are associated with your phone number. Back in the old days with paper coupons, you could keep going back to get more as long as you had a paper coupon to go with it

Since you have 3 phones, you COULD sign up for 3 accounts, but would need 3 emails to go with it. Then you could get that many sale items for something you want to stock up on.

I don't shop at Fred Meyer/Kroger, mostly because they are not convenient to me and when this 'member rewards' thing first started I had already signed up for both Albertson & Safeway (was separate ownership at the time) and wasn't going to sign up for another. In my area, there are plenty of other stores to shop at that don't have the membership.

Except for tracking your purchases and interests in detail. You need an account/app for that. Which is precisely why they have these discounts that are only available if you use their app.

They are buying the ability to track you with these discounts. If you want the discount, you have to give them something in return. You're not entitled to a discount on your terms. The discounts are given on the stores terms. You have an option to not be tracked if that is your desire - pay cash and forgo the discounts.

In my store, anybody who walks in the door always gets "sale prices". No coupons, no apps, no accounts needed. It's the other things - "best customer discount", "buy 5 get $5 off", "gasoline points", "weekly digital deals", etc. that are only given to people who set up a "loyalty account" at the store. This may be a card you scan at checkout, it may be an app you use on your smartphone - probably elements of both. These discounts are nothing more than an enticement to get you to sign up for something. If you don't like that something, don't fall for the enticements. But you won't get the extra discounts. Those are not an entitlement, they are an enticement.
