You can eat less calories and still be very, very unhealthy. It's all about nutrition. I suppose some dieters can go from one bag of chips per day to half a bag. Less calories? Yes. More healthy? No.
You can be unhealthy regardless of what you eat, environment, genetics etc
My goal is to lose 25 pounds, well 22 now
I cut out the chips completely but I wasn't eating a ton of them anyway
You can eat anything in moderation, even chips. As long as you don't eat an entire bag on top of the regular food you eat
 
I have a problem with people trying to tell me to cut out entire food categories. Humans are omnivores
I am not going to cut out meat, carbs, or chocolate either. It's not the way I want to live my life. I want to eat what is enjoyable to eat, which is all sorts of things. NOT junk and processed stuff ( which is not enjoyable to me, it tastes bad) but homecooked meals with a variety of ingredients. I am never going to be a vegan, but I enjoy making occasional vegan meals. I am never going to cut out carbs and just eat meat either. I am going to eat grain, meat, vegetables, fruit, dairy. I am also going to eat some sweets. I just have to limit the amounts.

one more thing, personally the very first thing I think anyone should cut out almost completely is soda. It is useless calories and chemicals that serve no purpose and have no nutritional value at all. I don't consider soda "food"

I guess my point was losing weight "it's not all about reducing calories," I used chips as an example of "empty calories"....nothing personal.

Who is telling you to cut out entire food groups?

nothing personal here either, yes, chips are bad for you, no argument there, but a few chips here and there won't hurt you either as long as you don't overdue, that was my point

as for cutting out entire food groups: there are tons of various weird to me diets out there that do just that. I can see cutting out a lot of the carbs if you are diabetic but if not, why can't we eat bread, oatmeal, rice etc? But many diets are based on just meat and stuff. On the other hand there is vegan that cuts out just about everything. I just don't think either one of those things are healthy. I think people are meant to eat a variety of things, and not just follow some fad diet trend of the year. That's all.

And, that is why I suggested watching the Blue Zone documentary on Netflix. Their lifestyle diet includes all food groups, even alcohol :) . But the Blue Zone lifestyle goes beyond what one puts in their mouths. The documentary discusses relationships, lifestyles, and exercise (even though the people in Blue Zones do nor formally "exercise." What they do is a forever lifestyle, not yo-yo dieting.
 
I figured our Christmas Eve and Christmas day dinners would be a killer to me. I limited my chips and dip to "just a few", and only ate one meal both days. Mostly meat, but did indulge in stuffing and sweet taters. Had one roll, and a sliver of pie. Both meals gained me about 1/2 a pound, but still managed to walk 3½ miles each day. I'll take this as a win, and still on track to lose more weight. I got a 2 pound tin of chocolate bark, with assorted nuts, and gave it away.
I must have said, "no food tastes as good as losing weight" a hundred times. :)

I don't have Netflix anymore, there is enough free stuff out there to not pay. I might get it for a month next year just to see what;s new

It's probably what TPTB wish we would eat, but they can go. ..hmmm ...can't say that here...get lost I guess?

I wasn't recommending it for you necessarily or anyone else, but simply offering alternatives to Netflix for information about a different perspective and way of life.

I've thought about keeping my fingers still, but have decided to offer a morsel of food for thought (bad pun I know. Please don't nix me.)
My thought is that there is not one "healthiest" diet. Before mass transportation and migration, people lived on what was available where they lived and were healthy. Innuits ate whale (and seal) blubber 8-9 mo. per year and had no record of heart disease, obesity etc. In So. America dairy 'goats' were a vital part of their existence. The list is long if one can find accurate historical sources. I think we are all aware that kind of material is being censored. Also, if we look at what was historically eaten together, the health aspect of the combination is to be considered rather than the item individually.
As stated above, regardless of what it is, the more processed the more likely that it's not healthy. If a diet is dependent upon items from other countries, it's (in my opinion) not sustainable (think war or transportation grid down). I'm not trying to be hypocritical - I drink coffee every morning, but I've had 1 banana in the past 8-10 years just to see if I still liked them - nope too sweet. I try to stick to what we can grow or is grown locally (again not 100%. I like spices).
It's kinda interesting that we seem to have to justify our decisions and worse convince others that our way is best (not just with diet). We try to eat healthy according to our research and there are times we don't but at least know it. I think that's all any of us can really do.
 
lunch today, cooked on my wood stove btw

Indian: spicy spinach with yogurt, omelette with spicy tomato and coconut sauce, potato curry with lots of onions and hot peppers , plus my regular soup ( chicken broth, handful of oats, handful of noodle, some veggies)
I just don't think this is unhealthy , everything was fresh and there is nothing deep fried either , plus today no meat

I don't feel "right" if I don't eat meat and dairy. I will say though that I eat very good meat and dairy. Youngest daughter who is a vegetarian has been eating small amounts of meat lately. Because she has lost too much weight, and doesn't feel very healthy. And she's been a vegetarian for at least five years. She does eat healthy foods, unprocessed.

our ancestors have been surviving on meat, potatoes, dairy and grain, with a few fruit and veggies thrown in for a thousand years
It's like Ladylocust said, the eskimos ate whale fat and survived. Many Asians can't tolerate milk. 5 ft Indians do just fine on vegetarian food ( but they do use a lot of diary) .
I would say it depends on everyone's body. I can't imagine no dairy. I was a vegetarian for 2 years ( not vegan) , and took vitamines and mineral pills but still got anemic and didn't feel well. Just didn't work for me in the long run
All these fad diets are there so someone can make money off them

to me what it comes down to is eat less calories, eat fresh food that isn't processed very much. If you live on packaged crap with 30 ingredients listed on the box, it's not a good thing, ooh and the soda. An entire isle in the store for it. That's just wrong. There should be warning lables on it like cigarettes
 
week #4 day #4

so I weight myself today and after all the cookies, eggnog and 2 plates of turkey I am still down 2 lbs. So that's good. The goal over the holidays was to not gain any.

Back on track with no cookies LOL

Today ( don't look all you vegans) : meat loaf, smashed potatoes and green beans
plus rice soup

I did have 2 manderin oranges yesterday afternoon, will have a few today also, or maybe and apple

edit: had a banana smoothie in the afternoon, no manderin oranges

today I am going to make Korean bbq pork, rice and pac choi, plus miso soup

this morning after animals chores I am going to have a piece of toast with peanut butter, and later this afternoon some fruit

edit: butternut squash soup instead, had a few looking like they needed to be used up, last 2

No breakfast. Ate lunch at Carlito's, which comes with a cold plate and hot plate when you order the Carlito's Supreme. I ate the cold, bringing home the hot plate and I'm done eating today. IF I do get hungary and that is not likely, I would eat a salad. I already did the weight loss thing and now just maintaining.
