I have helped jerk those things out of truck tires as a kid. the lazy version was ten penny nails rammed into a potato and wrapped in tape. they liked to throw them at each other too. the fancy name for these things is "caltrop".

iminutes.i used to talk to a horse guy (high ho baron) that hated caltrops almost as much as barbed wire.

Not a joke per se, but thought some here might appreciate this one:

Another use for this concept are flipping targets for shooting. I have one sized for .22 rimfire and it is fun to shoot. As you hit it it moves farther away and presents a different target face. One thing you have to watch for is those target faces are not always pointed straight back at you as the thing flips and turns. So you might have to pay heed to ricochet direction sometimes. I haven't used these flippers with anything but .22LR or air guns because of that concern.

We made a ton of money fixing truck tires during the coal riots, some wise guy figured how to take a tin square, snip it almost in half on both sides and twist it, instant caltrop! others were spot welded 10 penny nails or just nails in potatoes or green apples.

Fun note, I accidentally found magnesium ribbon on e bay, most of the other ingredients in thermite as well. a tin can full of that on a car hood won't stop burning until it hits the axle! the stuff is absolutely amazing! land an arrow of that stuff on a fuel tank and its the 4th of July!

Paid attention in chemistry class, teacher was a reformed radical.
