I have helped jerk those things out of truck tires as a kid. the lazy version was ten penny nails rammed into a potato and wrapped in tape. they liked to throw them at each other too. the fancy name for these things is "caltrop".Not a joke per se, but thought some here might appreciate this one:

Fun note, I accidentally found magnesium ribbon on e bay, most of the other ingredients in thermite as well. a tin can full of that on a car hood won't stop burning until it hits the axle! the stuff is absolutely amazing! land an arrow of that stuff on a fuel tank and its the 4th of July!
Paid attention in chemistry class, teacher was a reformed radical.
