I can remove a fishhook that is buried way past the barb. No blood and no pain.
I have done t several times and we just went back to fishing.
I could get that hook out but it would hurt and it would bleed but it wouldn't cost him an ER visit will.
I would love to hear the story about that happened.
I recognize the curl on the hook, so it doesn't get 'snug-up' it's obviously a deep-sea fishing rig.
And you are right, since the barb part is sticking out, simply cut that part off and slide the shank right out. Takes maybe 10 seconds.

Story Time!

I used to pay a friend to watch my son while at work since she already seeing to her three boys. I stopped after work to pick him up but they were out.

She pulled up and my son jumped out of the car and was yelling " Dad, Dad, Sue and Matt are stuck!"

Back story...
They been at the pool and afterwards the eldest boy Matt, had found a fishing lure in the parking lore. He playing with it the back seat and acting a fool when my buddy Sue reached around from the driver's seat to smack him (as he deserved). He instinctively tried to fend off her blow. Treble hook in her fore arm and another one through his thumb.

Resuming...

I habitually carried a pair of wire cutters in my pocket so I asked " Do you want me to cut your hook?" She said yes. I snipped of her hook with the barb in her arm.

After the ER visit...

She had a stitch or two because they had to dig out the barb. The hook in Matt's thumb was pushed through with only a puncture wound.

Yep. Push the barb out.

It's called a circle hook. I use them for sturgeon fishing.
Unless that hook was new and never used he is going to need some antibiotics.
Might need them anyway.

And hopefully, the hook isn't cutting into the carotid or one of the jugulars blocking the flow of blood- 'cause if that happens, when you pull that hook, he's going to bleed out before you can get him to an ER!
