Recycled Roadrunner​

Las Cruces, New Mexico

The roadrunner is the official state bird of New Mexico, which explains why artist Olin Calk built a giant recycled roadrunner -- 20 feet tall and 40 feet long -- in Las Cruces in 1993. Back then it stood at the city landfill, and was made exclusively of items salvaged from it: Olin's way to call attention to what he called, "consumption, recycling, and just looking at stuff we throw away."

In early 2001, Olin stripped off the old junk, replaced it with new junk, and moved the roadrunner to a rest stop along Interstate 10, just west of the city. The roadrunner could be seen for miles, and gained a wide new audience of fans. Signs around the sculpture warned of rattlesnakes, but when we stopped by to visit people were blissfully trudging out to the big bird anyway, to pose for snapshots or examine the junk (We did, too).

This was taken in South Dakota, but there were many trucks all over the place in Colorado yesterday. I-70 was closed from the Kansas border to Airpark Rd., on the east side of the Denver Metro area.

We flew in from Hawaii yesterday. There was a nonstop scheduled to leave Hawaii at 8:30pm (Hawaii) time. Our plane was scheduled to leave at 11:30pm, have a two hour layover in San Francisco, then continue on to Denver. The "red eye" flight.

We beat the non stop flight! It seems they had their Hawaii departure delayed by several hours due to weather in Denver. We flew out to San Francisco on time. Then no problems leaving for Denver from there. We even got into Denver 1/2 an hour earlier than scheduled. We had almost switched to the non stop. United had waived all change fees and difference in fare costs because of the expected bad weather. So switching would have been free. But we didn't switch because we had a hunch the non stop was going to get canceled or delayed. And they sure did. I hate nonstop from Hawaii to Denver in a packed plane anyway. It's a long haul, and unless you're in first class with the large fully reclining seats (that cost a $2000 premium minimum!), things can get miserable back there in the cheap (relatively speaking) seats. So I like a layover to stretch my legs. I just make sure that there are additional flights leaving after the connection that we can jump on if we miss the connecting flight.

In the future, I might buy three seats for the two of us. Even back in the sardine section, having a window, an aisle, and an empty middle seat makes all the difference. You can stow all your gear in that unused seat and leave your actual seats free and clear for you and only you. Not as good as first class, but still good nonetheless. And it's a heckuva lot cheaper to buy and waste a middle seat than to pay the ridiculous amount they want for first class. Airfare is not the big cost when going to Hawaii. If you buy your airfare early when prices are lower, two people roundtrip is less than one night in a resort.

My brother's name is Dave and I'm having to remind him what his A1C was when he goes to eat a cookie now.
This is probably on the gross side, but I went into Mom's bathroom to get something & decided her toilet needed to be cleaned. I use my own bathroom now and keep the toilet clean but apparently my brother doesn't know how to clean a toilet (or at least never tries) but he certainly knows how to yuck one up. I have no idea how it even gets like this. How does he get stuff all up the seat? (I don't touch the trash around the toilet bc last time I did I got yelled at bc I can't differentiate between trash and stuff Mom wants to keep-- bc I threw away stuff that was trash & apparently it was something she wanted to keep).

An hour of scrubbing, one battery dropped down the sink drain (fished out with magnet stick), and 2 accidental sprays to the face from the bidet later: (some of the stuff seems perma-stained-- the foam seat stains easily & I've tried everything under the sun to get the stains out without ruining the seat-- can't be done).
