Last week at the folk school was an amazing experience. I’ve never been around so many great pickers at one time. Everybody could pick!!! About half were currently in bands, the rest had been and probably would do so again in the future.

And playing in groups this large usually isn’t done. But these people could play well enough that 20 pickers wasn’t a problem, the music still sounded great!!! It was an honor to pick with these folks. And a big challenge, had to bring my A game and then some. It was a real work out but I’d do it again in a blink, loved every second of it.

Here are a few shots of the nightly jam sessions (which ran until about 3am). Some are out of focus. I was more interested in picking than taking pictures. I only stayed about an hour, was exhausted by evening.

I’m going to suggest they hold another event this summer. I’ll attend just to pick at night. I didn’t have enough energy for picking classes most of the day then picking at night. I saved my energy for classes since that was what I paid for.

Last pic, bottom left, dobro player. A nice young lady, came down from Bristol, either tn or va.

The guy in red was in my class. We're gonna try to get together and pick this summer. The young lady in the center with the fiddle stayed across the hall from me. She played piano for the Pettway sisters a couple times. They were the ladies who sang gospel.

The guy with the music stand... One of the best guitarists there, he was real good. Hard to pick a 'best' when they are all so good. It comes down to styles. I liked his style, swiped a couple things from him. I was polite, thanked him... 😁.

Oh, I just noticed the guy on the left in the first pic (10,564). Didn't hear his name but every time I saw him he was playing a different instrument (6). And he could play them all, a real good bass player.

Thought I’d add this… heard some funny stories too... One about a famous bluegrass duo known around the world. Even after many years of touring they still sold out venues. They were a household name, radio, tv. They suddenly and permanently parted ways, it was a shock to everyone.

A picker at the camp last week was the biographer of one of those two men. He knew the real reason, or at least one side of why the split happened. Both men had family on the payroll, not an issue. But when one picker learned the other had managed to get his dog on the payroll… That was It! 🤣

Split up one of the greatest duo’s in bluegrass history… over a dog?? Of course this story didn’t appear in the book.

Who knows? Pickers are an odd bunch... 😁

Let me think…

Hazel and Alice? Nope, I don’t think they ever did a split.

Bill and Charlie Monroe? They split up as that type of music was coming about. I had to look it up.. They split up in 1938. Back in the 30’s I don’t think that cheating on taxes or payroll was much of a concern. They were just happy to make gas money or be able to get to the next show.

Lester and Earl! Those two good ‘ol boys seem like the types that would pull something like that! They joined up with Bill for a few years after Charlie left. Maybe Charlie gave them some pointers? They were up and coming in the 1950’s. I remember seeing them chat, they seem just like the types who would pull a stunt like that.

Reno and smiley, Jim and Jesse, Bill and Doc…

I saw Doc Watson at one of his last shows. Merlefest, forget the year. It was a sad occasion as he had to be walked out and helped to sit down to play. He was fading, but his style still came through. Glad I got to see him on stage that one last time.

I am going to guess Lester and Earl.

Obligatory picture... The start of Saturday Cinnamon ROlls!

I like the old style buildings. Newer buildings don't have the same style and class. You seem to be having a good time with your travels.
Last time I recall going to DC was when I was a teenager and I took a bunch of photos of birds on the heads of statues.

Last time I went to Pennsylvania I only visited the Hershey factory. My dad asked the tour guide where the chihuahuas were that crapped out the "kisses". LOL.

The covered bridge reminds me of the one in Sleepy Hollow.

I was having trouble getting into the tighter smaller crevices under and around the cement boards with my shopvac so I took a scrap of foam board from my lap tray project, found a straw in the trash (one time it was good that the cats knocked the can over), found a drill bit the same size as the straw, pushed a screw through the center of the foam board chunk to get the hole started then pushed and manually twisted the drill bit and pushed it all the way through to make the fibers face away so it would be easier to slip the straw through. Hot glued the straw on and then the piece stuck to the shopvac via suction & worked rather well to get the debris out of the crevices. I need to find more stuff to improve upon the design and get it to fit onto the shopvac end more securely.

Be careful when you are down there. You may encounter some info that is contrary to the 'rewritten-history'.
No, the civil war wasn't fought over slavery.
It was about the government wanting to seize companies and property and some hard-heads stood up and fought them.
Read up a little about "Sherman's march to the sea".
His forces followed a "scorched earth" policy, destroying military targets as well as industry, infrastructure, and civilian property, disrupting the Confederacy's economy and transportation networks. The operation debilitated the Confederacy and helped lead to its eventual surrender. Sherman's decision to operate deep within enemy territory without supply lines was unusual for its time, and the campaign is regarded by some historians as an early example of modern warfare or total war.
His mission was: "If you won't give it to us, we will burn it to the ground".
He wasn't fighting troops in a 'war'. He was destroying civilian stuff.
They did not go down there to 'free the slaves', they went down to destroy cities. :(
Some preppers that worry about the government taking over our lives, they should take note.
