Right now gold is running around $1500 an ounce give or take. That is high, so gold is not much of a bargain, meaning it's not a great investment. It is more like an insurance policy, which in all probability will lose some money, but it will never be worthless.

Silver, on the other hand, is still dirt cheap at $17.50 an ounce. Junk silver coins (non collectible 90% silver coins) are running at about 12-13 times the face value, so $1.20-$1.30 per silver dime for example. You can get a roll of Eisenhower 90% silver dimes for around $65

Even though they carry more of a premium, I think cull peace and Morgan dollars are still the best deal on silver. There is just something instantly recognizable about them. Between their antique or collectible status, a large coin that fills the hand, and the fact it’s US currency makes it desirable to most people. Pre ‘64 dimes, quarters and half’s are cheaper or have a lower premium over their silver content, but a lot of people still just see their value at face value. I agree that there is a lot more chance that silver will go up in value over gold too.

Damn, had to cancel the last day of camping to come home and handle a couple of work emergencies. I actually got it all covered over the phone but had allready packed up and started back just in case I had to get more personally involved. I will have to be on tomorrow though since the guys haven’t had any sleep for almost two days now, so coming home needed to be done I guess. Really was great getting away though. Note to others thinking of a trip to the gatlinburg/pigeon forge areas; it’s a total rat race tourist trap... the area is beautiful, mountains, streams, etc. but every square inch is filled with cheesy souvenir shops and go cart tracks. Bumper to bumper traffic, and neon everywhere. Almost looked like a mini Las Vegas. Maybe I’m old, and some may love that stuff, but it seemed to me they took a really beautiful area and junked it all up.

The next batch of hardtack if finished and boxed up in the cellar. 2/3 of the beef jerky is also, the kids wanted to "test" it and see if it up to standards for human consumption...Now I have a load of --parasol-- mushrooms in the dehydrator. They are coming up fast after the rains lately. As big as a dinner plate and 2 inches thick. Another 15 kilos of sugar, 15 kg flour, 20 packs of baking powder and yeast, 5 kg. salt, 10 boxes of instant mashed potatos, worchester sauce, soya sauce, pepper corns, canned peas, corn, tomatoes, pickles and peanut butter rounds off the shopping tour for the month... AND WHAT DID YOU DO YESTERDAY?? GP
Sounds like you'll be set for a while and your skills will keep you alive longer yet, assuming the russians don't get you when they take over Europe.
I worked all day yesterday; nothing to do with prepping. But today I learned more about fixing my car after I had some troubles this morning. I think I may need to replace one of the battery cables.

That sounds good, learning to fix everything and anything that is within your understanding is ALSO prepping lady!! The survivalist knows how to fix a battery cable with anything. The PREVIVALIST always/usually has such things needed because it was obtained cheaper at Walmart, garage sales, flea markets, e-bay or the junk yard.

Sheeple say,"my shoestring broke, gotta go shopping", Survivalists say, " my shoestring broke, gotta make one". The Previvalist says, " my shoestring is gonna break soon, gotta get another out of the pantry" Prepping is not square, Kate. Live free, learn daily, practice always and don't forget to pray to that which you call your God. GP

Not really a prep, tomorrow I finally get this exoskeleton type device off my right leg and start some serious therapy next week. My leg is 1" shorter now until a hip replacement in about 3 years, in the mean time I will have new soles put on my boots and shoes, I really fetched up this time, just hope the world don't come to an end anytime soon.

Play safe, double up your mobility preps by using a pony instead of your legs.

Been working on my parents place getting it ready to sell and going through their stuff. My son took a trailer load of dad's tools and some furniture, guns, etc. Still have a lot of stuff to sell. We started painting the outside of their house today.
I got the posts and beams set for the new wood shed. Got the posts set in the ground before it froze too deep. Between snows I've had a couple more loads of gravel delivered and another 50 yards of top soil added to the back yard. That makes about 150 yards of top soil that will hopefully divert the spring runoff from flooding the house next spring. We've had snow off and on since the end of September and I'm way behind on getting ready for winter. I need to rebuild the rear blade on the tractor and do some welding on the snow plow. Been pretty sick for a couple of weeks too. Coughing day and night and have to sleep sitting up, and feeling a little weak.
We should be able to start moving in to the new house in a couple of weeks.

Make your own cough syrup. Narrow leaf or broad leaf plantain, 50%, dandelion leaves 10%, nettels leaves, 20%, misteltoe leaves 20%. Get a 1/2 gallon pickle jar. Chopped up leaves, covered with any alcohol, vodka, moonshine and such. Let it stand in an eastern window to get some sun, but not all day for 4-6 weeks. Filter out the leaves and add honey to taste. Store in dark place or dark colored glass bottles. If you have problems with alcohol, just use sugar and leaves in layers and just enough water to cover them. Works also but the alcohol lets you sleep better later. Take just before bedtime. GP

Whiskey, lemon and honey. Quick, easy and works. Of course before shtf, I’d just go get some mucinex or any otc decongestant from the store. Knowing some alternative treatments for after shtf is a really good idea though. In the mean time I suggest stocking up on aspirin (for both pain and fever) and an anti diarreal. Fever and dehydration are two big killers when people are in tough situations.

Yes and yes again. I've been doing herbs and spices since starting survival in 1974. Ate my first rattler then too. I have heard there are certain leaves when soaked in water for 2 days is also good against high or low blood pressure and diabetes. Nettles tee or syrup from alcohol is good against asthma, bronchitis and whooping cough. Look 'em up, cook 'em up. GP
also, using silver willow leaves and innerbark, cut up and make tee. Just as good as aspirin, without the side effects of blood thinning, GP

PLEASE CHECK WITH A PROFESSIONAL AND DO YOUR OWN THOROUGH RESEARCH BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANYTHING

Hmm, ok, my 458 mag :)
None of these are bullet proof, but are resistant. I like the idea of taking a normal looking car and having it be able to get out of a riot or disruption with normal street weapons being used. Somehow, a rolls or stretch limo, even armored, just makes it more of a target.

We started moving some stuff in to the new house today. We still need to finish the tile in the master bath, connect the plumbing and add handrails on the stairway. Plus a few other minor things. The new furniture and washer and dryer will be delivered next week.
I got the floor in the new wood shed today and should be able to start on the rafters tomorrow. I'm hoping to have the wood shed finished by the end of the week and will start stacking firewood in it. I have two cords of wood left to split and another 5 cords already split.
I'm still a little sick but feeling a lot better.

Wish we could zip over, help and zip back home. Sounds like you got your hands full right in the start of winter. All the best for your health. Only friends and health are the things you really need when the SHTF. Without them, the best prepping just stands around and waits to be used...GP

Just dried and stored about 10 kilos of mushrooms. No, NOT the funny ones. Had lots of rain lately and they are really popping up all over. Made some like a chicken fried steak and others into goulash. Anybody hungry now??

I love mushrooms, just wish I was brave enough to pick wild ones.

I can recognise about 15 good 'rooms on sight, but always take one of the books to ident the new ones I find, Practice something daily, one new plant or tree to use to survive. The wife thinks it is enough now for the mushrooms this year. We'll see.
