What Shortages are You Seeing?

I have never had trouble getting pet food locally until 3 weeks ago. I use 40 pounds cat and 50 pounds of dog food a week. 3 weeks ago I couldn’t get it at my regular store but other store had it on dog food. Next week it was cat food same story. This week no cat food at either feed store. I went to dollar general and got the only2 twenty pound sacks of cat food. One store said ordered and may be in Friday. I have to juggle my 3 in 1 range meal as other store usually has it when mine doesn’t. Never been a problem before. May have to start going to tractor supply. One 15 minutes north and one 30 minutes south. If I go south there is a feed store that grinds their own cattle mixes and is cheaper per sack.

I get my dog food from Amazon. I have a package to pick up at the PO that I believe to be dog food. If so I have about a years wort of dog food on hand. This time next month I'll cut my order back to quarterly instead of monthly.

This morning I did a grocery store run, the wife had prepared a long list... I was able to get everything on her list except fresh cooking herbs... Meat and chicken were back in supply and the limit of 2 items was removed, I was very glad as we made meatloaf the other day and I needed to back fill... Fresh fruits and vegetables are hit or miss, the tomatoes were low today, the rest of the section was mostly empty.... The wife reported that some of the long term food storage suppliers were indicating that they were seeing a shortage of dry beans, good thing we are all stocked. Last year, we tried the Anasazi Beans and we liked them but they have been in short supply, we have been told that they are expecting a fresh shipment in the next 2 weeks....

At the local grocery store they had 2 layers of chicken instead only just one. Still only allowed 3 packs per person. Price is up to $1.49lb right now for thighs and drumsticks. When it goes on sale for .99lb I'll grab 3 packs of thighs.
Same for the beef. 2 layers.
Pork is always fully stocked at this store.
Canned vegetables had what looked like a full case on the shelf instead of just 4-6 for each variety
Paper products full but still only 2 packs per person
Plenty of dairy of all kinds
Frozen junk foods were full.
Again frozen potato products hit hard.
Deli was full as was the commercial lunchmeats
Bread aisle was fully stocked
Of course, all junk foods and sodas and beer and wine was completely stocked as always. Stuff we don't eat is always stocked

I've heard that, too, and chickens are a no brainer to raise, so don't understand it. Also can't understand why the cheapest can of dogfood (Ol Roy) is over a buck a can.
Got lucky yesterday, went to a salvage store in the bigger town and found a case of 24 cans of Friskies pate cat food for $4.99.

Talked to my mom tonight and they went to their store today. She was shocked how bare everything was. Said the entire store was wiped out and it's a good sized store. About the only thing well stocked was produce and that about wiped their budget out.
I'm bettin daddy plants more garden this year than he did last year

Produce is crazy expensive. Went to stock up on more cabbage, I have a great place to store it in an old non working fridge in our milkhouse. It's a cement block room and things do well there. Green cabbage is everywhere and is 77 cents a lb. But purple cabbage is $2.98 a lb. No clue why the difference. Have noticed no great prices on apples this winter. Carrots, too. Iceberg lettuce has really varied...I've seen it for $1.20 a head to $2.49 a head. It used to be cheap. Glad I got my greenbeans seeded today, we eat alot of fresh ones, and they've stayed expensive. And some don't even look good.

Thought I would put this here in case anyone is interested. If you would like to have on hand a spare pressure gage for your canner, might be a good idea. Read on a blog last night where one went bad. That was something I'd not thought of & deemed it good info.

I got a spare and spare gasket last time I replaced. Fits all my canners

I ran into WM briefly yesterday and just went to some isles to see if they were well stocked or not. The pasta section had a HUGE hole in it. There was also some freezers without anything in them. They had some of their 5# chicken bags, but all of the 10# bags were gone. Other spots were hit and miss. They did have all (except ground burger) keystone meats available. I grabbed a few more pork ones just becuase. I also grabbed some WM brand hawaiin rolls and am going to try some keystone pork sliders for lunch sometime this week. The produce section was well stocked, but pricy! This WM is usually very well stocked, so to see the shortages here was something new.

Thats why I use weights on all my canners. I don't think the gages are reliable long term.

I was shopping on Friday afternoon, and noticed a lot of empty shelves. I didn't notice what they didn't have, and I got everything I needed, but they must have been short of something. Milk prices were up 10 cents a gallon from two weeks ago. If memory serves I think that is over a 10% price increase this year.

Milk went from something like $3.80, to 4.50 in my area in the last 6 or 7 months...

Wow!! It is only $3.10 a gallon here, and I know I can get it for $2.99 a gallon in another store I was just in today.

Californians would be jealous. I didn't look at Milk when I was there in January, but before covid it was over 5.50 when I was working in Los Angeles. I imagine it's done nothing but go higher..

DW went in store, they where out of bacon.
I do not know if it was a snow thing or everyone just wanted bacon, at the same time.
When she return the next week, there was bacon & she got some.

Quality produce in this area has been hit or miss, there are places that have produce if you don't mind the brown/yellow spots or bruises. Carrots were in short supply for so long I just started growing them in buckets, now I just pull 1 or 2 as I need them. It's easy enough that I may not go back to store bought carrots.

I am 100% in agreement with @LadyLocust on having spare parts for our canning equipment, any equipment for that matter. I have them sitting on the shelf with the canners (so I can remember what they are), I prefer the gauge type because it makes better use of the steam and gives me the ability to control things more.

I also picked up carbs, plugs, and sensors for my generator and all my small equipment (I labeled the boxes, cause I can remember yesterday).

It's spring and I see that W-M, HD, Lo's, and Ace are putting out the seed displays, I have also noticed that the ones around here are about half the size of previous years, it may not be a shortage but......

I went to a few stores yesterday including WM and all had plenty of most everything with only a few bare spots. Prices are up (again). Produce was well stocked in all stores, but at WM there was no single cucumbers, only in a multiple pack......except for english cukes. I am really shocked at the price everyone wants for radishes & green onions @ $1 a bunch. Normally it's 3 for $1

I did grab the last 3 twin packs of whole chickens at WM. Price is still $1 lb I can't really raise my own for that cheap and have all the hard work already done for me. I cut them up myself

I would like to buy a meat pack from a butcher for some beef & pork, but the question is if they are available and at what price.

As for the spare canner supplies, I probably should get a spare gauge and maybe even new weights, Thankfully my canner has both weight & gauge and I've learned to listen for the right jiggle, just in case the gauge did go out. I bought a few extra gaskets a couple years ago

I had to go to WM this morning to get more bunny food. They had 1 of the 2 kinds I usually get her. I looked at the pet food isles just to see. Canned catfood seemed to be the most bare at about 2/3 -3/4 empty. There were plenty of holes but dry food was available - different brands. About 1/3-1/2 empty. Dog food slightly better stocked on both canned and dry. That's all I got so didn't venture into any other part of the store to see. I don't like being there so try to escape as quickly as possible.
