I had a quite weekend. I went to my grandmothers birthday party yesterday, she turned 99. She's had severe dementia for almost a decade, doesn't know anyone. Family complains that I don't go visit her... A house full of strangers upsets her... duh!

Temps have turned cooler, down in the 30's tonight.

My kitchen wouldn't handle all those big Tones jars, so I bought three cases of those smallest of the mason jars, taped a label on them, and they stack well in my cupboard holding my spices. The big jars are in my food storage, they take up a whole shelf. I refill the small jars from them. I recently brought out my 2020 exp canned food to my big pantry. One aisle holds 2019, another 2020. 2021 and 2022 expirations stay in mud room in flats. I need to get more canned meats, or can some more. I always ask myself if this is "enough" if the stores closed tomorrow. I do have slammed full freezers, though. I arrange mine in box flats, stacked 4 high to a shelf. In each flat are like items: tomato products, soup, meats, fruit, vegetables, ready to eat stuff, like ravioli, peanut butter, etc...Have been concentrating on more and different flours, and now with the mill I just got, more grains. Not finding much locally, so I'll load up at Glen's when I'm in Yoder.

Round 2 is that we have gathered all the mulberry tree prunings and put them in the trailer, then the dead grapevines and rotted wood and in the trailer they went, headed back up the yard and collected the old broken down fan and venetian blinds that didn't work and in the trailer they went and we took a drive to the tip and dumped them in their various piles. I saved about half of the aluminium venetian blind slats to make into garden plant markers and also filled the house water pot up with rainwater I saved from runoff from the outside laundry tank stand.

DH has done something to one of his toes and thinks he might have dropped something on it as it is awfully bruised, I have just worked out what it is he went outside with his work boots and they got wet and it was freezing cold so it is a chillblain. I told him to put on his gumboots but he ignored me. The problem is with his back and nerve injuries he rarely feels pain when we drops something on his foot until after the event and he gets the shooting pains. He has whacked some arnica cream on it so hopefully that will pull out the bruising on it and stop some of the pain too.

Doesn't look like we will get our yard mowed today as the RSL club job he had took twice as long as anticipated. We will start again tomorrow on mowing and brushcutting our yard to get it up to scratch after all the rain we have had recently.

Collected all the dark clothing from around the house and now have a load of washing in the washing machine which I will hang out shortly.

I admit that I include the free roaming elk here as part of my long term food preps. I have the plans and means to kill and transport one as needed if the situation ever turned dire. Two or at most three three elk would keep my wife and I in meat for a year. Freeze, jerk, or make into biltong.

@Sewingcreations15 I'll bet you could take your grapevines and make wreaths to sell on your ebay store.

Today, waiting for call backs, getting things in order. Housework, oil change on car which normally Nice Husband would do, get at least one car washed -- the pollen is everywhere.
We don't have any problem until the pine trees bloom. Then theres pollen all over the place. Sticky yellow/green pollen on everything outside. Ugh such a pain to have to hose off of stuff lol You have to wash the wind shield before you go anywhere too

In the elk herd at our place yesterday was this one with a tracking collar and ear tag.

@Patchouli the grape vines were so old they were crumbling as they hadn't had any water as the house here was vacant for 2 years so unfortunately they had to go to the tip. The yard is looking way cleaner now too and we have clear air to mow today.

@Tank-Girl seeing if you are ok haven't seen you on here for a while.

Had work. Fixed dinner. Kids are at a track meet, so husband went to get them and we'll have dinner whenever. Hopefully the grandson ran. He was faking ankle injuries all weekend. Last month he faked an asthma attack. Not a smart thing to fake around our house. Husband has asthma and one working lung. So I told him this morning his only goal was to not come in last like last week. I'm hoping he'll try to catch the second to the last kid at least.

That's part of ours as well. Baiting in NM is illegal but they like to share the cows alfalfa.

Meat has been on my mind, for the same reason. Like everything, how much is enough?

The flooding in Nebraska, Iowa, and other places could potentially have a big affect on the availability and price of meat going forward for a few years. More than a million head of cattle were lost. How much longer will we be able to afford steak, roast, or ground beef, at least for a few years until things level out again.

I built a special shelf for Tone's spices, because they are not that deep, but the height is odd. I know that I need to figure out my spices better: how much to have, how much do I have, and keeping a good inventory of it.

I have looked at narrow areas and put narrower shelves there. Some are made from 1 x 6's, and the smaller spice shelves, from 1 x 4's. I measured and made 3 of these, but have more to do. I have a narrow space that I think I can make one of those pull out shelves from 1 x 6's, close to 8 feet high. There are several things that come before that and I don't think it will happen this year.

@Weedygarden watch this video if you can

Theres a "protein shortage" all over the globe

Today we started off the day with DH stain removing some clothing, putting on a load of washing and hanging it on the clothes line to dry. DH then washed the dishes and cleaned the benches and I washed them and put them away. While DH was doing the whipper snippering I filled the house water barrel, put on a loaf of bread in the bread making machine and worked out what shopping we needed to do tomorrow and made a list. I then deposited money into our bank emergency kitty and bills account online.

We then started in the gardens to mow the lawns and DH whipper snipped and then hand mowed the front lawn and the side of the house with the push mower as the ride-on doesn't fit around and I put the grass clippings around the base of the trees and in the front shrub garden beds for mulch.

Back to the back yard where DH mowed the larger area with the ride-on and I put the mulch around the trees in the back hard and DH continued and put the grass clippings around the mulberry and mandarin tree in the side paddock.

Both of us are exhausted and our backs sore so we have had a nice hot shower after our 3 + hours in the gardens and am relaxing in the lounge chair with our feet up.

Tonight's dinner was bacon and egg sandwiches with ice cream for dessert.

Housework, laundry, animals....husband's lunch made for tomorrow in fridge, dinner mostly made. Emptied both dehydrators: squash, cabbage, hot peppers. Ready to start processing 15 lbs of carrots and then they will go into the dehydrator. Store had no good deals yesterday, so I bought carrots. Have a couple of hours before I head into work, then I work late. Grandson survived track meet, came in last by a lot. Coach made him sit out the other run. Saying creepy things to other teams young ladies to get attention (sister told on him) and that's not going too well for him. Husband talked to him this morning about it. I suspect he will meet his match next year in High School, and it'll not turn out well. Granddaughter did well, ran two races, came in the middle, but came in first for high jump. Would love to motivate this grandson somehow. He is the last to do anything. He fakes injuries and illnesses. He is lazy and will let his sister do all for him. He lies. He always wants more and wants to be first (except at sports or chores). He is very difficult at 13.

Yesterday, I did the monthly Walmart run and then visited a friend in the nursing home. Came home and did two loads of laundry and made some phone calls. Today, I took DH to two doctor appts, TSC for goat grain and minerals, thrift shop for eBay and Walmart for his ice cream. About enough for me today.

Grocery day in the big town... Since I got my little deep fryer I'm enjoying fresh fried catfish... Q? I looked at some frozen catfish fillets in a box today...

Any opinions? On the box I saw today there were chemicals listed, never a good thing. It would be nice to be able to thaw out a fillet any time I wanted instead of trying to use up fresh fillets before they go bad...

New area for me... any experienced catfish fryers out there?

I can't help you with catfish but why don't you freeze your own. I've eaten tons of home frozen salmon, halibut, and various cod varieties. I lived off of red snapper one winter. I taught myself how to make fish enchiladas and all sorts of other stuff.

@Peanut why not freeze your own catfish it would be the same if you catch it fresh and would have no preservatives. Catfish is also known as basa fillets which are a Taiwanese catfish :) .

We usually batter it and shallow fry and dress with any fish sauce, tartare is nice with a squeeze of lemon juice.

Here is another recipe for you -

Sweet Dijon Basa Swai Fish (or a fish of your choice) - Directions

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  • Mix honey, mayonnaise, olive oil, mustard, and lemon juice together in a bowl.
  • Place each fish fillet on separate pieces of aluminum foil.
  • Bake fillets in the preheated oven until fish flakes easily with a fork, about 13 minutes.
Hope this helps.

Started off the morning with relaxing with a few cups of hot chocolate and then we got ready to go into town to do a paid mowing job that DH had booked in.

Got there but it was too wet as they had rain the night before so we went into town for a while to do some errands to wait for the sun to dry it out a bit. Went to pick up our cordless drill we purchased online on special, to the shopping centre where we went into BigW and I purchased 10 long sleeve cotton t-shirts on special for winter as my others are so old they are getting holes in them and on the way out to the car found a brand new reusable carry bag sitting on the ground so we picked that up to bring home as there was no-one in the car park where it was.

Then to the hardware store to buy whipper snipper cord and we found a huge 216 mt roll of it making it a little over half the cost of buying the smaller packets per metre and found a 250 kg load moving trolley on special for under half price. We have been needing moving trolley forever and have borrowed a friend's one when we needed it as they were so expensive to buy and now we can give him back his (he has about 4 of them). Usually we don't like to borrow things in case something breaks etc and would rather have our own equipment where possible. These are handy for moving our huge 13 - 14' ironbark upright posts around as we are almost ready to start our garden bed enclosure.

Back home and we unloaded the ride-on and all the whipper snippers off the trailer into the shed, bought the t-shirts upstairs and refilled our water bottles. We are now officially spoilt as we ran out of our rainwater on the gardening job and refilled it with town water and boy did it taste disgusting compared to our clean fresh rainwater here. Our shire is now on severe water restrictions of 120 lts per person per day which is not much when you think about it but not a problem for us as all of our water is reused such as grey water to water the lawns, fruit trees and shrubs and most of our home runs on rainwater so we use very little town water as it is. I don't know how anyone can have a garden and water it with such little water available and the cost of excess water is huge here if you go over your quota.

Getting our bore sunk will be a priority now.

Tonight's dinner is stir fried mince and vegetables and maybe a tad of lovely creamy icecream for dessert.

Won at bingo last night.
So did cousin who met me there.
So far today:
Up dressed have had pot of coffee.
Strawberry has put herself back to bed.
She doesn't feel good for some reason.
Have to go get fruit and produce for 2 weeks about $20 worth.
Bills are paid for the month.
Got my application for new apartment just about filled out.
Have a couple of questions about couple of questions.
Found out Strawberry is over the weight limit allowed.
The manager is going to see if owners will make exception because she is my service dog.
Had to find 5 non military references, which was little bit harder than I imagined.
Seems they don't like involve military personnel as references.
Or maybe she just doesn't like the paperwork involved with APO addresses.
Dishes are done, house needs vacuumed.
All in all good day so far.
Timmie good luck with Cardiologist.
Amish Heart sorry you're having trouble with grandson again.
Everybody have a good day, night, evening.

Awesome you won at Bingo!

As I sit sucking coffee and communicating with my peeps on the computer, I always have the TV on watching the morning news. Once a day, they have a contest where if you text them, and are the 50th, of the 3000th caller, you win that prize. Well, I have been doing this for nearly 15 years. I got a call last Friday from this television station congratulating me that I won. Since I play every day, I snidely asked if I won an umbrella. She said, "not exactly."

I actually won two tickets to Phil Collins, when he plays on his world tour at Las Vegas this October. I also won a suite at the New York Hotel for two nights to coincide with the concert, and even won a $100 gas credit card to go along with the concert package.

First contest I've even won. I'm jazzed.

Thank you.
Congratulation on your win too.

Fruit and produce put away.
Turned in application for new apartment.
Have more paperwork to turn in tomorrow.
It's raining again.
Got the car cleaned out again.
Found two bottles that had rolled underneath the passenger seat back to front.
Complentating just throwing them away.
They had been there a while.
Still don't have clue what to get soon to be 8 year old boy for his birthday party on Sunday.
Would love a nap, but Strawberry probably won't let me.
Might take a nap anyway.
I like to win enough at bingo where the winnings pay for the next weeks game, but atlas that doesn't always work out like this week.
But have enough winnings to play the bigger games packet, will have to pay for the table games
Last game Red Blackout will payout $825 if you bingo in 56 number or less.
Would use part of that as new apartment deposit and the other part for big meat bundle to fill the chest freezer.
That's what I would do if I won the last game.
