The thing about this virus is that you can get it again. Having it once is not like other things where you are now immune. I know someone who has had it twice now, once in March and again in November.
@UrbanHunter said the same thing. My question would then be- how often are you supposed to get the vaccine? Sorry, (we’ll not actually sorry) but I would still prefer to take care of my own health rather than trusting it to politicians or big pharma. (And I’m fully aware there are folks who believe otherwise which is fine, because health is a personal decision not a public one.)

I think the current vaccines are similar to the polio vaccines we took in the 50's, a two time thing, while if I remember correctly, polio vaccine was a 3 part deal. I still suspect that the vaccine and documentation will become more of something to attempt to control people. I read that people will be required to carry the card to verify they have it, but that cards will likely be forged or false ones made.

What happened to herd immunity? Why did the Spanish Flu disappear after 3 years 1918-1920? I do realize part of the modern day flu vaccine is spanish flu. But that is a recent vaccine. But really, in March, aside from "don't wear a mask", we heard either stay inside or wait for herd immunity.
In March they were saying don't wear a mask because there were not enought masks for the doctors, it wasn't about not getting sick, it was about protecting the doctors.... They also thought that getting it once was like chicken pox, you got some long term protection, but now they are learning the people who had in March and April are getting it again in November and December, so the protection is only good for about 6 months at best. And they have been finding different variants of the disease as the virus mutates, so the new regional disease may not be the same as yesterday's (does not make me want to be a globe trotter), to make matters worse some variants are more agressive than others. When you put it all together I think that the winter of 2021 is going to tell the tell; if we are still in a social distancing required world in June, then we may be in for a rough few years.

The Spainsh Flu started someplace other than Spain, the first case was documented in the US in 1918 as the US entered WWI, we either got it from or took it to europe and then brought it back at the end of the war (Infact all the troops going home helped spread it around the world), in total it took several years to run it's course, 50 million deaths, and 100 years later we still have a flu season reappear each fall. This does not make me feel all warm and fuzzy about a quick end now that we have a vaccine.

Reading your first paragraph tells me that the govt didn't care about the "common" citizen. They did say not to wear a mask. Only admitted to being short masks awhile later. The rest of the paragraph tells me that they really don't know what they're talking about. They're just guessing. And we're the guinea pigs. For instance the infusion my husband just got last week. They used it on covid patients in the hospital and it killed them. Then they figured out it helps people only in the first week of symptoms. So they are doing that now, and stopped killing people. People in the hospital had symptoms longer than a week. They are flying blind in my opinion.

Seems to me the mask and distancing thing isn't working out at all. Wife wears a mask everywhere she has to go. Just like the majority of folks where she has been. I'd put $100 on her getting it at her Dr office that only had a handful of folks in a large office. Everyone in mask and well spread out. Dr was even double masked. None of that stopped it.
Today we slept in, watch the UT football game for a while, then got cleaned up and went out and rode around looking at Christmas lights. About 3 hours of that and she was worn down and ready to get home.
Just watchin Christmas Vacation tonight. Funny movie.

Ha Ha We watched that last night. Tonight was The Santa Clause (Tim Allen). I don't know where husband and I got it from either. We literally bathe in hand sanitizer and always wear a mask when we're in public. No clue. He had a few doc appts 2 weeks ago, and we're thinking maybe there, or maybe at the Walgreens getting his prescriptions. Hope your wife gets to feeling better. She's about a week after me, and I'm starting to do all right. Husband is going to take awhile.

Mom ended up calling all 3 of her sisters to talk briefly. She had missed calling on some of their birthdays. She's not good at keeping in touch and doesn't do social media. But they were very happy to hear from her.

I'm about to get some sleep but leaving you with a Christmas song from a bass singer:

Going to church in a while. One daughter is going to sing and one accompany on the piano. I wish I could still sing, would definitely take some practice learning how to sing alto instead of soprano.
Amish, they say a church choir is how it got spread a few months ago. I'm glad we can sing again at church, even if I don't sound so good, that doesn't matter.

While I've heard the term herd immunity frequently this year, somehow, early on, the word was out that there was really no immunity to COVID, except for a little while after you've had it. As I've said before, I know someone who had it in March and again in November. This person is so very careful. Has had mascne, acne from her masks. Gone through so much cleaner and disinfectants.

I remember when the topic of the virus was first discussed here, it was late January. I immediately started sewing masks. I made about 30, and then the no, no, no about cloth masks came out.

Really, the best thing to do is to isolate yourself, but how long can a person do that? How do you live life like that? I have older relatives who have barely left their homes since the virus began. No more daily mass or running to the store for this or that. No more family gatherings for holidays. They don't want to risk it.

Even if you have someone bringing you what you need, you are going to be exposed by the goods dropped at your front door. What about the mail carrier? They touch so many pieces of mail, and certainly, sooner or later they have a viral load going on.

Sadly, the immunization may be the best way to go, but I really, really do not want one. I don't trust it or the idea of it. Call me paranoid.

Sorry, Phideaux. Our house arrest ends tomorrow. officially. The kids are disenfecting the house with Odoban and cleaning the upstairs where their rooms and family room is so that they can have friends over again. It'll be over soon enough, but I know the "enough is enough" thing. You got that right, Weedy..about a life worth living.
People are singing in the Amish churches here, Patch. They never stopped. Hard to not sing when you are praising God.

My wife has only been in contact with the hospital for appts, hospital to pay on the bill, her RA doctor .... Never without a mask and always immediately sanitized her hands. Noone else . That's it in last 2 weeks.

Same for me . Except for Lab work , pumping gas and picking up curbside meals and groceries.
Went to pick up new car alone , after her test.
Certain things in life MUST go on.

We're gonna stay in until next Monday....unless some harsh symptoms appear before then.
Health dept called yesterday and said she could go to health dept for a more accurate test on Monday.
May do that , or wait a few days to see if any symptoms appear.
No symptoms at this time.

We are praying that it's a false positive.
We are just depending on God to take care of us.

Jim

I saw something about someone who went to the hospital for a procedure, virus free, but came out with it. Something is really wrong with that picture.

Doctors told us that's the biggest reason they want you out after surgery so quick.
The longer they keep you the higher the risk of getting a virus.

Sent wife home same day after a big surgery on 3 levels of spine.
Normally would have kept her.

Jim

I really believe a lot of people are getting false positives. When K was told to quarantine by his company it was because he sat within 3 feet of a man who tested positive in a meeting in a tiny office were social distancing was not possible. This man had no symptoms but was only tested because his SIL tested positive. The SIL only tested because someone he had contact with but no symptoms tested positive.

Walked dog, ran her in the backyard for a bit too.
Church was great. Nice to hear those lovely daughters sharing their talents. I wish I could share it here.
Visited some family afterwards and was ever so relieved to come home.
You can laugh about that here ____.
Was able to get cold hard cash the other day for the vehicle that died a month ago. I kept forgetting to call any place and the first place I checked was responsive and had someone here within a couple of hours. He even took the tags off of it for me and was very kind and polite, yes ma'am, etc. But that is how most of these young Texan boys are, polite, at least in this area.

@UrbanHunter just curious, what kind of gravy is made for pork? I mean, is it pork gravy?
That mostly sounds like what I have been thinking of...have been considering a pork loin, but I think I will ask eldest son to fix a beef brisket in his smoker. I always love mashed potatoes, would like homemade fresh rolls, thought about barely cooked peas and carrots with tzatziki dip stuff (so the kids will eat). If son says no on the brisket, then we will not be eating. ha. haha. I think they made brisket in the smoker for Easter. It is a new favorite.
We don't eat much beef. I don't recall eating prime rib or rib eye. Have been relying on the crock pot for most beef dishes.
Goodness, Amish, it sounds like it has really run through your community. I hope you are feeling much better.
I'm sorry I don't know how she makes her gravy, I know she makes a brown gravy using drippings and sometimes she adds some stock. I don't do the cooking, I'm just the eater... ;)

The wife's doctors have told her that they don't want her in their office, she is too high risk. She does virtual Dr. visits and has her blood drawn here at the house by the Nurse who changes her Central Port Line dressing every week. Her devices have a wireless connection and transmit her data daily. We were going to the Dr's office twice a week before COVID-19, now we go once every 3 months, sure saves time..... When we do go to the Dr's office, they have us come 1/2 hour before they open, do what they have to do and get us out of there.

Many people can cook many things, but gravy seems to be a mystery to make for some. I once saw a post in a preparedness group, a woman talking about her gravy mixes for her preps. o_O Gravy can be tricky and can get lumpy, but that is was a hand held blender is for!

Other than take care of the animals in the morning , I spent ALL day until about half an hour ago baking Christmas cookies. I will give some to friends and neighbors , made way too many for us to eat but I do this every year.

A few of our goats have hoof problems again. They seem to get this occasionally in winter when it is cold ,wet and muddy. One of the milk goats has it the worst. I had to give her a shot of antibiotic. It's not traditional looking hoof rot, but sort of an infection just above the hoof. I sent photos of it to the university vet I know and he wasn';t even sure what exactly it was last year. Always something..but at least I know how to deal with it . Shot of antibiotic, and copper sulfate solution sprayed on the hoof, then I put this stuff called Nu Skin on it. Eventually it should clear up, already looks better

We were thinking about cutting down a Christmas tree ( we have cedars that make nice trees) but it just never got done. Tomorrow we are getting more hay. But at least we will have cookies....turkey is defrosting also.

I can make gravy just fine, but my downfall is pie crust ( from scratch). It just never turns out exactly right and I have tried with butter, lard, shortening, and combination of it. And I am generally a very good baker. But pie crust....forget it!

I buy pie crusts now, but I made them for years. I had a recipe that was a no-fail. I think it had a little vinegar in it, but it is so long ago that I don't remember for sure. I don't even know where that recipe is.

A couple of things: if it's now different strains, the vaccine is next to useless. Also, what is the health condition of those getting it more than once and is/was it the same strain? I like my doctor, but it's obvious that many doctors are not pictures of health. It's seldom that they promote actual health and common for them to want to prescribe drugs to mask the condition. And if masks and distancing works, why is it spreading? Perhaps it would be wiser to become a healthier nation (we are one of the sickest in the world.)
Edited to add: @Cnsper started a thread including a video "Preventing Covid"

That's a hoot - a can't make gravy at all, but my mom would always plan the pies around when I arrived so that I could make the crusts for her.
