I don't worry about the locals,,,it's those out of area looking for what they can get without a fight
I never really imagined anything like this. I am certain that if this isolation and so many being unemployed drags on for months we will see things get ugly.

I really don't expect to see much in the way of rioting until a certain demographic in the big city's miss they're free handouts and welfare checks. I personally don't much care what happens in the big city's. I have never lived in a big city other than short periods of time for work. Even then I always owned property as far away from large population areas as possible. That was part of my prepping strategy for the last 40 years.
I still believe that most people are decent and want to do the right thing, (those that live outside of the mass urban areas and the ghettos that is.)
I believe that we're in for some hard times, made worse by politicians and know-it-all experts that have been given total control over our economy and our lives. We may never return to "normal" after this latest crisis, just like we didn't after 9/11.

The run on banks is truly disturbing. I’ve always thought that was going to be a sign to get more prepared. It is a two edge sword with closing your bank accounts, or even drawing them down low. One, as was pointed out above, not all places take cash, but to me that’s kind of a minor risk. The biggest is security. If you get robbed or your house burns down you could loose your life savings overnight. My advice is definitely keep cash on hand but keep some in the bank and in other forms of investments too.

For us keep your money in more than one bank.
Keep some in a safety deposit box at the bank
keep some in the home preferably in a fireproof safe or even gun safe
And have a couple stashes in outbuildings or buried caches.

Never put all your eggs in one basket

Dont put anything in a safety deposit box at a bank. When the bank fails, SDB are not insured and often take months or even years to get your property back, if you get it back.

I think a SD box is still fairly safe but knowing that you may have a hard time getting to it is a real possibility. I certainly wouldn’t put anything I needed quick access to in it. Like Dirt Diva said, spread it out in several places. Noting is 100% safe so you increase your odds by diversification. My biggest fear is an economic collapse. Then all your savings are lost.

Case in point; I stopped at our bank this morning and they were closed. For the second day. I talked to the bank manager as he was leaving the bank. I asked him if I could access my safe deposit box and savings, he said "no maybe Monday". Right now I can only withdraw a small amount from the ATM.

Too many hinky things happen with SD boxes on Burn Notice for me to want to put anything in one.

That sounds really suspicious to me Arcticdude. Here the banks are open their regular hours only the lobby is closed to foot traffic. You have full access to the windows and ATM. You can make an appointment to see a banker. I am not sure about the SDB. I would assume you could also make an appointment to get in your box.

My husband and I were discussing this as he used to work for a bank and he said that there used to be laws that a bank could not close more than 3 consecutive days. He seems to remember it was a leftover law from the depression era when banks took holidays for like 10 days to prevent runs on funds. He thinks that was before the FDIC though.

Some banks here are limiting their hours more now, like no Saturday’s and opening later. There are laws about them not being closed for over three days for your access but if they, like any other business, run out of cash then laws don’t matter. As far as the FDIC goes, with the govt in this crazy mode of spending so much and so fast I don’t see them being able to bail out many all at once. This is looking pretty gloomy when you lay it out see how fragile our money system is.

I heard an ad on the radio on my way to work last night from a bank Said bank name but didn't pay attention as it was not mine, but what caught my attention was it was staying open drive thru only and would stay open for as long as they could but needed to keep its staff and members safe from the virus.. Really wish I had caught its name.

Hear, hear DD! Never put all your eggs in one basket or even two. I like how you think! :)

this is just getting started here and I am expecting a stay at home order when the halfwit calling the shots gets scared and realizes how deep the CHIT is going to get,,,a few weeks or a month down the road after that and the home invasions will start,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,there will be blood in the streets

Do you really think so in low populated areas in the countryside?

I think the Urban vermin and those lefties who think they are entitled to everything will predate on isolated rural communities as they are already doing. We have one farmer just found a dozen pregnant ewes slaughtered (badly) for their meat and another farmer just found 8 goats shot dead whilst a third has seen 1500 gallons of diesel taken overnight.

OMG! It seems much too early for this type of wanton destruction and theft! What a horrid waste to slaughter pregnant ewes. That poor farmer.

I, too worry about a certain demographic coming to the mountains and rioting and stealing. Very much hoping us mountain folks stick together and stop them on the highway way before the small towns up here. In my area there are those that know how to take care of their own needs and then there are those who moved here from elsewhere and don’t have a clue how to raise animals or grow food. We do have our share of ex military and ex sheriffs and police officers who have retired.

Hell I worry about both. The Plateau is littered with small farms and homesteads. And in among them are lots of off the beaten path mountain roads with everything from preppers, survivalists, people that just don't want anything to do with the world, just your average folk and then there are the crazies. Lots of elderly in the area. And the majority of all these are armed. No one is going to call the police anyway. The last sheriff went to prison for using the jail as his personal escort service and his cousin is now in office. I don't really worry about riots I worry about the guy a couple properties over that brags about never reading a book, rarely works and is armed to the teeth. His kids are going to get hungry and the "stimulus checks" aren't going to last long going up his nose or in his veins! Here my homestead sits right down the road with a great big garden, fruit trees, chickens and rabbits for the taking. With little food in the local stores and a cornucopia just right through the woods. I don't care how many big dogs are running or how many fences, locks, lights, or sensor alarms I have he's gonna come calling. That's when the bullets are the only solution. Hoping my two kids will be out of quarantine by then and on the property with us. 4 armed adults are not anything to sneer at. Two of those (husband and son) ex military.

Seriously BP? That sort of thing is normal? Guess I’ve been living with blinders. How common is it would you say?
its fairly common especially in the rural areas close to the larger cities, I have heard of sheep going missing also heating oil, but slaughtering of sheep is uncommon unless its done by a dog, normally theft is what they call plant machinery, tractors and forklifts.

How would someone steal 1500 gallons of diesel? You'd need a dam fuel truck! That's one motivated perp!

If I read the article properly I get the impression the farmer also has a firewood, coal and fuel and heating oil business, I'm guessing they nicked his tanker wagon cost most of the farms around here only keep about 500 gallon in static tanks

Ahhhh... that makes more sense. You used to see the meth cookers around here stealing the farmers anhydrous tanker wagons they use for fertilizing crops. That is until they started locking them up and putting gps trackers on them...

When we first moved out here farm crime wasnt as bad as it is now, the first story I picked up on was with the farmer not a mile from my house. He had installed a 500 gallon glassfibre / plastic diesel tank in his farmyard , locked naturally, so some thieving cretins simply hacked or hammered the tank until it started leaking, they took what they wanted and left the rest to drain out badly polluting the local river.

At least you understand your threats and surroundings. That’s a step ahead. And absolutely agree that 4 armed adults is nothing to sneeze at! All I can say is shoot to kill because you don’t want someone like that having a grudge and a second chance! Tennessee law allows you to defend you home, right?

Defending a home in TX is one thing. . . Property such as a garden of livestock is another. If caught, the sheriff will make the person pay for value of property. As when the neighbor kid shot a man's cow out in the pasture just because he could.. I can hold them at gun point if they are on my property but I can only shoot them if I felt my life was in danger. In the home is a different story.

Each state has different rules I believe,

Stand your ground state but In Tennessee, you can't use deadly force to protect property, life but not property . Tennessee's Castle Doctrine allows anyone with or without a gun carry permit to shoot an intruder who unlawfully comes into your house, a house, a building you are visiting or your vehicle.

So if someone comes on your property with a weapon, then you can rightfully shoot them to defend yourself. If that happens always call an attorney first before the police...just to be protected legally.

Here in Georgia we have the right to protect our property...but I would still advise anyone to say it was self defense...and call their attorney first.

You are correct about every state being different. With the case of a drugged up dangerous man coming on my property to steal, I would shoot them. In dangerous times such as these the police will never be able to stop that person from coming back and perhaps targeting you.

Yep, if someone comes on my property to steal any of my animals, you can believe I will feel threatened, and in hard times maybe even out of the garden.
