What are they gonna eat?
...Each other?
So far, no suggestion on who they can call to save them. :(

Phone Home - they will be calling everyone on their list who they think they can beg from, especially those they think are softies.

I guess it is ok if I offer an answer to my own question.
I can only think of one...

They are dictated by gov. and do not allow any other form of relief - they get $$$ for each disaster they serve. I can't now remember which one (thinking Katrina but ???) but a local org. wanted to send folks and supplies down and were not allowed because RC was there.

ETA: I no longer donate to RC :(

I've read the local chapters "volunteer terms/conditions" and no longer support them either, certainly NOT as a volunteer.

Somebody does, and so do hundreds of others. :(
No food or fuel, whatcha gonna do?
If I live right there, that means I'm an idiot. No communication, no self-defense, no preps, no nothin'. What are they gonna do? Most are gonna die in the first two weeks, I expect, if it's a catastrophic situation.

To come closer to answering your question, I had a buddy - a prepper type - who lived in NYC for a short while working at NYU. He had a Harley gassed up and a bag full of gear just in case he needed to scram. I pointed out Manhattan is an island and if they close the bridges, he's screwed unless his Harley is also a sub. That's when he left NYC.

But that sort of planning is probably what I would have to do. I can't imagine letting myself get put in that scenario, though.

When New Orleans has it's last major hurricane we rode it out in our apartment much to her dismay. Been through enough of them to know if I should stay or go. Predictable the power went out but my area had no flooding. I filled my gas tank prior to the storm so I could be mobile if needed. About a week later power was restored in some areas but not mine. Got back to work at a different shop. National Guard was giving ice and a case of MRE's at the baseball stadium. I think it took like 2 1/2 weeks to get power back in my area. We're still here none worse for ware.

I was laying in bed this morning and couldn't get back to sleep, and I was thinking, (yeah, I know I shouldn't do that :().
Thinking about the people in the big metropolis cities...
Here's the Sourdough scenario:

It is not TEOTWAWKI, but the country has fallen on hard times.
A smart country has damaged our supply-chain infrastructure.
There is plenty of:
Electric power.
Running water.
Internet (and financial transactions).
But...
The grocery stores are empty, and the gas stations are all closed, (no gas or diesel).
There is food and fuel being rationed out in a couple of places, but you don't know where.
Who are you gonna call?

First off, take state and federal government offices off the list, they won't even answer their phones in good times.

what ya see...i find it interesting amount of water...no i know you said water, power etc. is flowing...bear with me...just looking at first snap shot i see lots of places to get food from...the trick is being aware of troubles early on and fast enough to act quickly if this is how its going to be and no escape can happen.

first off they/you should have just a few items to get by..one being a 50# of quick oats...that one product will feed a single person breakfast every morning for a year or more easily...now add in a 50# of rice...thats a base of one meal a day for a year too...then add in say flour or noodles or both and 50# of beans...just those will get you a very long ways...you will need items to go in with these...but its a base....

now early on i would hit that world market for more bulk stuff...early on as long as its safe i would work it like a job....i hit the street on my bike and backpack and come home with most high calories and dense food i could find and get. i would hit even convenience stores and get all them frozen burritos i could carry to put in my freezer.Any of the little cup of soup ramen noodles pour hot water over let sit and eat as well...i would just change my mind set up from foraging in wild from bushes etc. to foraging in the city from unusual places...

Hit up pet stores...no not to eat whats there but to get items i could use..like bird feed etc. use bird feed to draw in pigeons on roof of building...do it late in evening and trap them pigeons till gone. go to park and get the ducks people use to feed...maybe even seagulls...

before anyone hollers thats not legal we are talking keeping alive here so alls fair.

i still would have grow pots on balcony to grow zucchini and yellow squash and cucumbers..all short days to harvest and versatile in ways to use.

i also would hit up any restaurants i frequented and had a relationship with and say he would you sell me xyz or could you make me xyz number of meals to take home on a deal so i dont have to get out as much right now...hit the next one up till had meals ready to eat in freezer.
