@MoBookworm1957 heard more about your car yet?

First day I've felt like doing anything since last week. Think I might have come down with something, bug going around. It's hard to know for me (cfs). I feel crappy all the time, it's sometimes hard to tell if its a new crappy feeling or just the usual.

I made some tincture this afternoon, cleaning came next. Got all the plants and critters fed and watered, got all the peppers watered in the garden. Refilled all the buckets. Fixed dinner, just watching some tv.

Inresponse, Have you ever tried the program GIMP? I is free. Doesn't have all of the features of some of the other programs, but it might be able to work with printing software. I've never checked it out. It's insane that Corel programming has gotten so expensive. Would it be possible for you to use the Corel from your old laptop, transfer files to your current pc, & then use some sort of cheap or free program to open & print stuff? (if GIMP doesn't allow the printing options you want)?
I did have GIMP many years ago. I just looked and it says nothing about vector design, it is mainly for pictures and images. Thank you though, I appreciate the suggestion. I use the CorelDraw to make vector designs that are needed for clean, crisp lines that have no pixilation. The image that prints on the clear transparencies must have perfect lines or I wont have clean lines when I make the silk screens or print on the shirt. Anything else would give the print a blurry look. I just got my retirement check and when I wake up my Home Depot check will be deposited so I will probably bite the bullet this weekend and buy the new program. GF's oldest daughter will be home from vacation this weekend so I will have her deal with all the downloading and online BS that I don't have the patience or experience to deal with.
Cleaned out the loose dirt in the hole in the concrete where the plumbing lines come in for the bathtub. I will be mixing up some sanded cement (no gravel or binders) to pour in the hole to prevent any gophers or other critters from coming up from under the slab. The building materials guy at work that I trust said it will do what I want and if there is ever a need in later years to replace the tub or plumbing it will chick out easily. Bought two bags before work along with some Melamine particle board that I needed for a new platen (board) for my screen printer. I will still need to round off the top so that it forms to the neck of a T-shirt, hopefully I can get the neighbor to do that for me using the old, ruined one as a template. Bonus on that, they had a piece of Melamine with water damage on the edge so I got it at 70% off and they were able to cut me 4 pieces out of the good area so I will have extras available. I only need one but they don't last forever.
Tomorrow (Thursday/today) I will probably be putting up the cement board in the shower area to prepare to putting in the tile. Assuming I get some sleep tonight. GF bought me something else to try for sleep from the health food store. Hoping it helps. Surprisingly the Ambien (prescription) hasn't been helping the past week. Maybe if I only need that occasionally it will start working again.

It's brain surgery, ummm, neutering day for Bear. Heading for the clinic in about an hour! He's having a fit wondering why he hasn't gotten breakfast!! After we drop him off, hubby and I are going to breakfast😃! Then going to Tractor Supply and Walmart. Taking a REAL nap before picking Bear up later, not a squeaky toy tug of war nap!! Will update later, everyone have a great day!!

I know that feeling. I might have fell asleep at 2am and woke up at 4am. I tried for over 2 hours to get back to sleep but at 6:30 I decided to get up and sit in the recliner and watch YouTube junk.
I just cooked up some corned beef hash and cracked a few eggs on top. Gonna have that for breakfast and try to get a nap.
The monsoon season finally arrived to southern Utah Monday afternoon and we have had decent rain the last two evenings. I am guessing about 2" of rain so far and slow and steady enough, for most of it, that it soaked in really well. It is supposed to, and hopefully it will, continue for the next several days at least. We need this to continue for a few weeks at least, and hopefully for a couple months.
I haven't been posting much lately, not much to post. I cleaned up my far too messy silk screen equipment and have it about ready to start making shirts, but I am running into computer issues. The old laptop that I cut off from the internet 8 years ago has all the software for my stuff but the old printer croaked a few years back and the ex bought a replacement, which is fine but it needs software downloaded for it to work. I refuse to try to download that software on the old computer because "updating" one thing usually causes a need to update everything else and there is no way I want to attempt that mess. I can put the printer on my newer laptop but it doesn't have the CorelDraw program so I can't create on the old one and print from the new one without that program. My options? About $600 for a new CorelDraw program that is a one time purchase and mine forever, about $270 for a pay once a year program, or about $25 or $30 a month for a monthly subscription. Looks like I have to dish out $600 soon and then fight with the download process. I hate downloading software from the internet. With my luck it will get almost done, there will be a power outage that takes out our internet for a while, and when I log back in it will tell me I already downloaded the program and will have to pay again for a second try. Have I ever mentioned that I hate computers?

Breakfast was yummy, time for a nap.
Have you looked into Inskape? It's free. I've dabbled in it helping someone who uses it to transfer to Qcad for one of those cutting machines. Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator is only a subscription now I believe.

I was about to recommend Inkscape as well but @Tommyice beat me to it. That said, I haven’t used it. I am one of the people who did buy CS6 and they can pry it from my cold dead hands! XD So hopefully Inkscape will do what you need.

Getting ready to make husband his breakfast, then outside for the animal duty. Little granddaughter and I going bin shopping late morning, then on to visit mom. Twins are leaving for band camp, and they have therapy all afternoon in the bigger town that they have to get themselves to. I'm sure granddaughter will dump him off at the house after and he'll fall asleep till dinner and she will say she's going to work.

Ugh! I've never heard so many concussion stories as I have this year. Did they give you something for your headache?

Goatheads and purslane look different. Goatheads have flat leaves and grow pretty flat on the ground, but so does purslane. Goatheads also have yellow flowers, but so does purslane. Purslane has more of a succulent look to it. I can see how they can be confusing, but they do have a different look to them.

"Goat head vine grows from a single taproot at the center of the plant. Being an annual, if you cut off the plant from the root or pull it, that will kill the plant. A 2 person team approach is very productive. One person standing cuts the plant from the root with a shovel (it only takes one well-placed slicing chop under the center of the plant) and the second person picks them up and bags them.

Some folks say they will just spray the weeds with an herbicide, but that doesn’t kill the seeds or prevent the dying plants from ripening seed before they perish. Physically removing the plants is mandatory."
Those burrs can survive buried for 10 years and maybe more. The experts claim 7, but I disagree! For 10 years I pulled them out of a small gravel area I have. I had them eradicated and didn't see one plant for a couple of years. Then they came back heavy as ever. I now just use the weed eater on them when they are little before they make burrs. I have found burrs in my shoes when I walked in places with no goatheads. I think animals and birds spread them. Their only enemy is a weevil that many around here have tried, but with little success.

It is amazing that purslane and puncturevine seem to grow in the same dry sandy environment and together. We had more purslane earlier due to record rains, but now with triple-digit heat and no rain, the purslane is looking puny but the goatheads are thriving.

My cousin always called that kind of surgery, "personality removal"...

I'm a fan of GIMP myself for editing pictures, but I combine them in Paint shop 8 and I know for a fact it does printing. MS paint does too, but you have to watch it or it'll cut your pic in half!

Going back to the goatheads, I am now a bit confused, for some of the plants have the nasty goatheads developing while the others look similar but have no goatheads. Some of the plants *might* be purslane, but I'm wondering if there are any other similar-looking plants in that family? I don't like using poison (including weed-killer) in my yard, mainly due to the cats, but what about a backpack flamethrower to burn any questionable plants while they're not yet fully developed? I have a lot of questionable plants in the yard that *look* like they might be goatheads, and I don't care about "losing" plants that aren't actually goatheads... I was watering this morning and inspecting more of these plants, and I'm thinking some might be "ringers" for goatheads, but I'd like to burn 'em ALL off just to be sure. I'm gonna look up backpack flamethrowers and see how much they cost... maybe the Depot rents 'em, I'll have to look into that as well. I did identify a few heavy mats of puncturevine which I am going to remove this week, probably tomorrow morning, as they have goatheads galore developing on the vines... I don't want those things multiplying in my yard. I take it the goathead itself is actually a seed pod of some sort? Or are the seeds found elsewhere on the vine? Thanks in advance for any & all info.

I have nights when I sleep so well, and then other nights when I wake up and stay awake for hours.

Many years ago, a colleague told me that when she had anything with artificial sweetener in it, that it kept her awake at night. I have always avoided artificial sweeteners, so I am not sure how accurate this might be for others. For me, any caffeine after my morning coffee can keep me awake at night. Chocolate does as well.

Caffeine doesn't do much for me anymore unless it's a huge amount in a short time. Like if I drink 48 ounces of coffee in the morning, I'll get jittery. But I drink so much coffee and then my caffeine enhanced water flavoring mix on top of that, it's ridiculous. One of my coworkers said that when I die it will be two weeks before my brain realizes it because all the caffeine will keep it going...

Burning works, some farmers occasionally use it around here for organic crops. But it's a pain. In that part of NM I would think that fire would be frowned upon in the summer

@Tommyice mentioned Inkscape ( Draw Freely | Inkscape ) and I've used it for vector work in the past and it's pretty darn good. Also, older versions of the Adobe suite do 75% of what the new subscription only versions do and can be had on eBay from time to time. I wonder if the same is true with CorelDraw?

My family got me a smaller version of the weed burner a while back, and the results were disappointing for anything other than grass. Used tons of propane to clear a small area and took 10x longer to burn them than it would have to just bend over and pick it...

Hey jishin, glad you are around, thought you left us!!

Hey Wingnut, I read all of Johnstone's "Ashes" books once upon a time. Still think of some of the stories. Fun reads.
I am tired and wiped out. Animal work and garden work. The meat chickens are outgrowing their many bins, so I cleaned them out and added two more cages. Another few weeks to go and they'll go to freezer camp. Then I won't have 4 giant bins and 3 cages to clean out every other day. The twins left this morning for band camp. Granddaughter stayed for a bit and went and got her car registered, then went to work. Don't expect to see her till 10 or so. Grandson got home at 330, said hello. Went to the upstairs family room and crashed out. Little granddaughter woke him up for dinner, he came down, made a plate, and took it up stairs. He'll be up all night long now on his phone. He knows I can't touch it or ask for it or the police will be called. No chores. Bad attitude. Trying to get husband to decide what he wants to do this Sunday for his birthday. I'd like to take him out for the day with little granddaughter, somewhere fun, and make him a special dinner or go out to one. He's been down in the dumps over all this, and really needs a fun birthday.
I'm "that" way, but in my house, food stays at the table. Even when the kids were little, they ate at the table. To my knowledge they still do. I would think that even under the horrible circumstances sanitation would be considered important (just my thing )

@snappy1 what jar sealer did you get? I must have missed it.
I have a food saver with the jar attachments!

Yesterday, I labeled and put away all canning from the past few days.
Took ebay photos.
Walked, of course.
Got my stovetop pretty well cleaned up after the sugar incident.
Harvested okra and peppers.
Bible study last night.

Walked this morning and picked up 75 pears where a branch had broken at a friend's house.
Picked up a different friend and went to Walmart for monthly stock.
Came home and walked dogs.
Getting ready to prep pears for freezer.
Make lunches for the next couple of days.
Going to help prep a fundraiser at Church at 3.
Bible study at 5:45
Rest!

These suspect plants are in open areas, and I could burn 'em when there's no wind, keeping a charged hose handy... but instead of a propane flamethrower, maybe I can simply set small fires of pine needles over those areas, those needles burn hot and they'd probably kill the plants beneath, aye? And I have PLENTY of pine needles in my yard... ;)

If I take a hoe to the smaller plants, that should kill 'em, right? Or will puncturevines grow back from roots alone? These things seem tough and hardy, I'm just trying to figure out the best way of destroying them. I'm gonna cut and remove the larger "mats" of the vine, that should work fine, but there are a gazillion small plants which may or not be goatheads... perhaps the hoe would be best to simply scrape 'em, thereby preventing the development of goatheads? 🤔

I don't want these damned things gaining any greater foothold than they already have on my property... so I'm looking at ways to annihilate 'em without spending too much money or effort. I already have a thousand home rehab tasks stacked up and waiting, don't need to add any more tasks if I can help it, but these goatheads gotta go...

Edit: Okay, I just went to the web for answers, and several sites say that hand-pulling and hoeing are the best options... hand-pulling for those vines with seeds already on 'em, and hoeing for those plants which haven't developed seeds yet. Evidently, the burrs ARE seed pods. Guess I need to don the welding gloves tomorrow morning, grab the hoe and wreak destruction on the smaller plants, then cut & remove the larger mats. I also have an iron rake which may come in handy for some of those smaller plants... I'm gonna destroy anything that looks like goathead plants, even if there's collateral damage. Better to be safe than sorry... I'm tired of these damned goatheads in my life, lol.

Yea! Picked up another 400 acres of private land for plant hunting this afternoon. A week or so ago I found little creek with yellow root going under a big highway. 100Yrds away was a small gravel road which I drove today looking for the head waters of that creek.

About a mile in the road dead ended at a house. An elderly lady lived there with a few nasty pitbulls. I was afraid to get out of my truck, those dogs meant business. As I turned around I saw the lady come out of her house so I stopped for a chat. Turns out my mom was her boss for a lot of years. My mom must have been a great boss because...

The lady was happy to let me hunt plants on her land. She only owned 200 acres but her sister who lived in FL had the adjoining 200 acres. She over saw that land also… On condition… just let her know when I was in there hunting. Her land contains the headwaters of 3 different creeks, 2 of them have yellowroot, haven't searched the 3rd yet.

There was an old cemetery on that road also. I wanted to check it out today but it was just too hot, 102 on my porch.

I'm home with Bear after his surgery!! Hubby went with me, we took my little Pontiac Sunfire because it's easy for Bear to get in and out of! We got to town and the tranny quit!😮 Panic attack time, I have to pick the dog up before the clinic closes at 3pm, this is at 1:30! Had a friend come get me and we picked up Bear and he took us home, I live 30 minutes from town!! Hubby got a wrecker home!! Bear is NOT groggy, just the opposite! Of course the CONE is horrible!! He is just now starting to settle down!! We went out and peed and had a little water, hope he takes a nap!!

Crazy day! Had to haul a platform about an hour away then figure out how to off load it (roughly 2500 lbs.) We gotter done. It's 104* at the moment. Had to run home and put Hucklebunny inside in her carrier which she doesn't like but didn't want her to melt - bunnies don't fare well in the heat. On my way back to the shop I picked up some milkshakes and gave the guys a mandatory milkshake break 😋 We've been keeping earlier hours due to the heat. Guys can't work over a torch or a forge when it gets this hot.
Tomorrow, I have a ton to do garden and kitchen wise - broccoli, cabbage and maybe greenbeans if they have any at farmers market. Also, going to plant more (greenbeans) in hopes of getting more before frost hits. Everything is so late I'm hopeful.
They finally harvested the wheat in front of our place. They've not yet pulled the onions (next field).

Both these comments make me comfortable with just buying the full program and having it mine forever. In a year or two I will disconnect this computer from the internet and hopefully the computer and CorelDraw will last many years, like I did with my old computer that still works. I know if I sign up for the subscription I will exceed todays purchase price in about 3 years and then I will have to keep paying forever. And, if they make it only subscription in the future I will end up with nothing tangible unless I keep paying the annual fee. And there is always the possibility of a company going out of business or being bought out and leaving you with nothing but memories.

I have seen the program offered cheaper on 3rd party sites but I have serious doubts of trusting the product or the customer service if I have a problem.
Thank you all for the input. I appreciate it.

I take it the goathead itself is actually a seed pod of some sort? Or are the seeds found elsewhere on the vine? Thanks in advance for any & all info.
Yes, and in the world of education, when we teach about how seeds spread, we would call it a hitchhiker. The goathead is the seed that attaches to an animal and hitches a ride until it is removed somewhere else. I've removed many goatheads from dog paws.
