Wingnut, I hope your back calms down soon. I know that feeling. My back bothers me a lot. Glad yours only does it periodically and not all the time. Kittens sound adorable! I hope they acclimate to the new cats well.

Peanut, hope you manage to get the chainsaw sharpened and put it to use. I know that feeling of needing to be productive. I went sooo long with just sleeping and not getting stuff done. The young man you described sounds like a former "friend" of mine who we paid to do yard work & he never did it. Dude was full of excuses (or didn't even explain) why he no called no showed, walked off with some of our tools, & didn't do the main things I needed done. Still owes us over $800 but going to court around here would take too long and be too much of a waste of time. He likely wouldn't even bother to pay up even if ordered to and he's the type of person who might retaliate. Has the same issue of not being relaible and not being able to keep a job.

Spikedriver, ugh, sorry the crown fell off already. That's one of the reasons I haven't gotten a crown (other than price). I actually don't have a problem with people poking around in my mouth since I got used to it as a kid going to the dentist. But I guess it depends on who is doing the poking around. i trust my dentists. I've been lucky to only have good ones.

Magus, sorry you were treated like crap at WIC office. There is zero reason for the people there to treat people like crap. If you're not being rude to them they have no reason to be rude to you. That always annoys me. I hope you manage to get the blazer door fixed.

LadyLocust, glad you made it back safetly.

Snappy, good to see you're ok. Hopefully you can catch up.

Sonya, sorry to hear about the ram. I hope he's not in pain and I hope his hoof rot heals quickly. That must feel pretty awful for the poor thing.

Giz, glad you're feeling well but sorry to haer the conveyance snapped.

Mel, is the sourdough starter to make bread?

Amish Heart, I'm glad you avoided getting stung by bees and that you had a nice store trip with your mother.

VTHillman, LOL!

Urbanhunter, I don't think I have ever had a casserole in my life.

Supervisor, nice that you got a new phone. Mine is from 2014 but I don't back stuff up to the cloud. I'm not looking forward to replacement but the digitizer is becoming less sensitive and it takes longer to respond and do stuff and freezes up so I have to take the case off, open it up and pop the battery out, then put it back in, put case back on, and turn it back on and wait forever.

I got up and went down to the workshop hoping to find a round cutoff in the scrap wood bin. I remember seeing them when I was younger but I guess they are all gone now. Unless they are somewhere else outside the workshop area. Found some interesting scrap pieces for other stuff that I pulled out and noted I have some decent lumber to use for stuff. Found the hinge-pins for the door I painted (was worried they were lost). Took a nice nap afterward.

Ordered this ball latch for my pantry door since it has a dummy knob. It should be arriving soon. Got notified that the Lowes order is ready for pickup and I need to check post office.

I'm going to see if my brother is willing to ride along with me and maybe we'll grab food at Panda.

I hope you're having a good day @zannej ! Lunch sounds good too!

Walked first- sometimes I am on auto pilot, but it gets done!
Took my friend to eye doc appt.
Then Walmart and day old bread store.
Visited friend in nursing home.
Came home and walked dogs.
Took ebay photos.
Read Bible study.
Still have to shred cheese so I have it for salads.
Then Bible study this evening.
Will be helping out a friend for the next couple of days.
See you Sunday!

Today was the last of my early days, I got off at 14:00 and decided to treat all my camo with bug juice, I made up 3 gallons in a five gallon bucket and dipped each item of clothing in it for a couple of minutes, wrung it out in another bucket, and then hung up the wet item. I then poured the collected juice back into the soaking bucket and added more clothes. I kept this up till all the juice was gone.. This is the first time I have used this stuff so I can't tell you how it works. Tomorrow is opening day and I am getting off at noon to go for a walk.

FYI, my DW has managed to fill every freezer we have with garden stuff and casseroles, so I have no idea what I will do if I harvest something. ;)
Try some simple spray on fabric softener and pin a drier softener to your hat. you no longer smell like food and deer don't care.

Took the Kona to the car dealer for an oil change, tire rotation and engine logic software upgrade because someone took the easy way out of treating the oil rings when it was manufactured. Got left at the dealer because my ride went to Kia instead of Hyundai. Talked my ride through finding the Hyundai place which was a pain in the butt as I had to stand in 95 degree heat. Went to Walmart. Went back to the dealer and smashed my thumb. Now I don't feel like doing much so I'm taking it easy. Put potatoes, tomatoes and peppers in the dehydrator.

My thumb is all blue so I'm glad my neighbor is here. He can help in the yard.

Thanks, Snappy. Going well thus far today.

Mel, OUCH. None of that sounds like fun at all. I can not be out in the heat. Sucks that they took shortcuts when building the vehicle. I don't think I've ever even heard of a Kona before, but I'm not up-to-date on car brands. Blowing virtual kisses to the thumb. That sounds painful.

Brother wants to go to Samsclub tomorrow and I wasn't feeling up to it today anyway. Trying to rest a little more. Went to pick up mail and then walmart to grab RX. Stuff was finally ready. Got the battery for my Worx. Lowes e-mailed me to say my charger is ready for pickup-- I'll get it tomorrow since its an hour away. Ate some ribs and am about to take another nap (my body needs that today) and then will vacuum in the bathroom. I brought the vacuum in and my brother helped with groceries since he was outside peeing (Mom was in the only bathroom). He pees right behind my truck where I walk/stand to get stuff out of the back though. Ugh. If I hadn't been out there he probably would have peed off the porch.

Been in a bit of a funk, but the universe is conspiring to get me off my butt and get productive again. My Escape has started occasionally misfiring, so I hopped in my old Prius to grab a new set of plugs (I doubt it'll be that easy, but here's hoping) and it started lighting up like a Christmas tree with every light on the dash going off at once. Turns out the inverter water pump and coolant control valve have gone bad. So we'll fix the Prius 1st and then get cracking on the Escape. Was able to order the pump, control valve and coolant from Amazon for less than just the valve alone would have been from AutoZone. Hopefully this will get the Prius running again, I'll be a little grumpy if there's more wrong, especially after spending over a grand replacing the catalytic converter a couple of months back. Fortunately I made arrangements to work from home until the puppy is a little older, so no driving is needed for a while other than a couple of trips to a grocery store 1/2 mile away.

TeeJ, I hope you get all of your vehicles working.

I just had a salad and got food for Mom. Didn't get my 2nd nap yet. Still need to vacuum and I put the new push-broom together and will need to use it to flatten the vinyl sheet even more after I vacuum. I just need to figure out which way to push the bubble under the floor.

Wally mart was well stocked EXCEPT chicken patties, plenty of fresh, but no patties. decent deals on burger meat. no more roasts in my price range though. No cabbage either, no pot roast, so no problem. Am I the only one who puts cabbage in their roasts?

Lot of stuff has been up.

Bought an electric water heater and it is waiti g for install. But then I had to go with planning because I will be the water lines together for both halves of the duplex. That will give me two water meters and three eater heaters. Two gas and one electric.

Vut before that happens there will be a day when both water supplies will be shut off and if things fo wrong no water to either side of the house. Not good. This is when Ben starts detailed written plans and parts lists. So the water heater sits for the time being.

In the meanwhile The Princess has immersed herself in scary reports and videos and has made backup power for the freezers and security are now at the top of the list. (Any wonder why I only worry about what I am doing today?)

I already have a manual transfer switch mounted to the wall that needs wired in and wired to an outside outlet for the generator and it would take a few days and maybe $300 in parts BUT The Princess wants the security handled first.

I configured a Simplisafe system and it is setting in my shopping cart while I decide if I want to add water flooding sensors and going with 6 instead of 2 outside cameras, and if I cover my detached garage/shop.

Got an opinion? Please share.

But as a former security consultant in my younger days, aside from the outside cameras, alarms systems are only telling one there IS a problem and doesn't prevent it. So I have to research if I can purchase or fabricate bars for all our doors save the entry doors. So that is on my list but...

The township has a legal limit to the

height of grass of 18" the extended period of rain is putting me near a code violation. So I weed wacked for 16 Ah worthy to take the edge of the fringe. The granddaughter is scheduled to mow tomorrow to mow in exchange for the gaming computer Gramma bought her. (Only 396 more mowings to go! ;)

Que sera sera

Tomorrow maybe harvest elderberries for wine and yellow beans.

Life is interesting.

Counting my blessings.

@zannej - thanks, hopefully it goes as easily for me as it did in the YouTube videos I watched today ;) Must have been salad vibes today because that's what we had for dinner as well, although I'm going to admit I doordashed them because I was totally out of juice by dinnertime.

@Neb - having had a basement flood when my autistic daughter knocked a toilet on its side I can honestly say water alarms are worth their weight in gold! I wish I had a network connected version back then like they have now.

Our cherry tomatoes are going absolutely hog wild this week. I think I'm going to freeze some and dry the rest. It's nice having cans of tomato powder to thicken sauces with.

It's 1:08 AM and I'm sitting here pondering my job.

My company has had 3 men die on the job in less than a month. I didn't know any of them. They didn't work in my department. They were train crew members and they all died in derailments. The company will send out safety bulletins and make up some new rules. And in the end, nothing will change. The company will keep demanding that less employees do more work, and exhausted men and women will keep making mistakes, and pay with their health or their lives.

On the 16th of this month, we will go on strike if labor negotiations are unsuccessful. I am nearly to the point of hoping to be replaced by scabs. Being a railroader used to mean something. It used to be a good job. But if I had to walk away from it, I'm not sure I would feel bad at all. All the suits in the Crystal Palace in Omaha take home seven and 8 figure compensation packages but they never spend a 12 hour day sweating in the desert or freezing in the mountains, or eating dirt in the wind on the high plains. They never step up and keep working with blood running down their faces. And the sure as hell don't hurtle down the rails at 70 MPH in the dark on short rest. And yet they tell us that "labor does not contribute to profits and has no claim to share in them".

I'm just about done, y'all...

Is cabbage edible?

I thought it was just for looks...

Oh yeah, I got this recipe, shred and boil up a head, drain it, cover it in cheese and bacon bits. kind of like a healthy mac "n" cheese.

When it stops giving you a sense of pride and stops being real, time to move on.

@Spikedriver listen to your intuition--it'll reward you with the right choice. It may very be a hard choice but it will be what's needed to calm your soul. If you're up that early and that's what's on your mind, you probably already know what you need to do. Be careful, work stress and angst has a way of eating up your health. @Magus is right if you have no pride or are worried that the workload/schedule is compromising safety of yourself or others, it's time.

Something needs to change in this system of corporate "leadership" (and I use that term loosely) and their disconnect from workers beneath them. I know of what you're feeling. I work in a large chain pharmacy that is bleeding pharmacists and technicians. They've been playing fast and loose with compensation. Saying they'll raise substantially the longer term employees a year after they increase the starting rate for new hires only to say "oh, that's for level 6 paygrade and below." I'm there 11 years and am a grade 16. While this is going on, the C-suite and other corporate weenies have a big party at Epcot and compensating John Legend millions to play for an hour. All the while the stores are trying to hire and when we finally get someone there is feet dragging from above on getting them thru the training before being able to work in the pharmacy. ....and as I type this, one of the only other two techs working today called out sick.

I put cabbage in lots of meals but NOT roasts. Those only get carrots and onions

making something with cabbage today: ramen noodles , ground pork , shredded cabbage and carrot ginger, garlic, soy sauce brown sugar and hot sauce

Cabbage is used in cole slaw. I like fresh cabbage.

Spikedriver, that is awful that people have been dying. I remember seeing a program about how a train derailment caused changes in the rules (or was supposed to) and the train companies were given x amount of dollars to fix their system and make it safer and had x number of years but deadline passed & they still haven't done it. Its been over 10 years now & they won't fix their stuff properly. I don't blame you one bit for wanting to leave.

Went to Lowes to pick up my online order. Wasn't ready so I had to wait awhile. Then I went to Samsclub with my brother. Grabbed take-out from Wendy's. Dropped stuff off at friend's house, back home. Unloaded groceries and ate my chicken sandwiches. Went back into town with my brother to put gas in the CR-V. Now back home and I'm about to take a nap. Knee isn't cooperating with me today.

My friend's useless co-worker (who has been calling in or just not showing up at work without calling in, leaving early, going out to his vehicle to get high while on the clock & then not actually doing any work his entire shift, and basically being a lazy jerk) was read the riot act & told he *had* to start doing his job. He was apparently skipping this job to do a second job that pays more. My friend said "If it pays more then go to that one fulltime but stop coming in, doing nothing, and leaving all of the work to me!". So, this morning the guy called in and said he quit. No 2 weeks notice. Just that he's not coming in anymore. My brother already told his boss that if that guy got fired he'd apply for his job. Two hours after that guy got quit and my friend's boss said he'll hire my brother. My brother was already doing some of the other guy's job already anyway. They just have to get some paperwork settled and find someone to cover my brother's shifts at the old job (he can't keep both jobs). But the new job starts out at $14/hr so its more than he's getting paid now. And he *might* be able to work it out where he can still do the current job part-time on days he's not scheduled to work the other job. He'll just have to see what they will allow. New job has regular hours instead of swing shift and fewer hours, but better pay to compensate.

I've been getting telemarketer calls every fifteen minutes since 9:00 this morning. I've said so many horrible things to those poor robots, if they were human, they'd blush!
But here's the kick!
Same company, different number every time!

Knocked out some serious weeding this morning, clearing the southern end of the property (inside the perimeter fence) and forming two large piles of weeds to dispose of later in controlled burns. That's how I'm gonna get rid of most of these weeds I've piled, I'll just let 'em dry out & then I'll torch 'em on a calm morning, lol. Rake the ashes across the property and be done with 'em. I might save one compost pile, but I have truckloads of pulled weeds out there in piles, so I'm gonna make things easy on myself and use fire to my advantage. Fire is just another tool here in the boondocks, that's for sure... can't wait to burn off some of the pine cones and old wood left from last season, I'll burn those in the stone fire ring and kick back in a nearby camp chair to enjoy the warmth on a cool fall night. By the time Thanksgiving & Christmas roll around, my yard should be looking pretty darned nice! Free of excess wood, pine cones, weeds, etc. :)

Manana, I have an appointment to swap out that recalled tire on the thumper... gonna put a Dunlop on the front wheel instead, which I would've done earlier if it hadn't been for BS "supply chain issues" created by dirty globalist swine and their political tools. Meh, karma will catch up to those filthy swine soon enough... their criminal machinations have NOT gone unnoticed, lol. But today, I'm gonna rest up and enjoy a few well-deserved cold beers, I really went to town on the weeds this morning and got a lot done, so I've earned the break, lol. One thing I noticed today: I'm gonna have to use the machete to whack down those tall weeds in the parking strip outside the perimeter fence on the east side, they're too deeply-rooted to pull by hand in that hard compacted soil. No problem, I'll bust out the machete and get to work, hacking the weeds right where the stems or trunks meet the ground... a lateral swipe or hack should work in each case. ;)

Now, for entertainment this afternoon I intend to watch some library DVDs... I watched Hal Jepsen's 'SKATEBOARD MADNESS' yesterday, I was shocked to see it on a library shelf, lol. I saw that film when it first appeared in theaters in the late '70s, and I hadn't seen it again until yesterday... wow, what a difference those decades make, lol. Some parts of the film were totally cheesy, but other parts were cutting-edge material, particularly the pool-riding scenes and the huge concrete pipes in the desert... those were F#%NG AWESOME!!! Perhaps one had to live through and participate in the whole vertical skateboarding scene to truly appreciate those video clips... but I did my share of vertical skating and riding on the overhang, so I enjoyed those parts of the library DVD. They brought back some good memories, even if some of the skaters with whom I rode are now long gone... may they rest in peace. They rode hard, that's for sure...

I'M OFF TO DRINK BEER & WATCH SOME ENTERTAINMENT, Y'ALL HANG LOOSE AND BE GOOD TO ONE ANOTHER... YOU'LL SLEEP EASIER AT NIGHT THAT WAY, LOL. HASTA LUEGO!!! AND CHEERS!!!

Harvested the last batch of elderberries. May have enough for a bottle of wine. Collected more wax beans.

Picked up the eldest granddaughter so she could mow the grass. Returned her home so it is now Friday evening which is date night with The Princess. More Rings of Power for us.

Behave

Ben

Don't know where the day went, but it did. Animals, garden work, lots of laundry. Picked 5 pails of peppers and canned 27 pints of them. Still looking at a bushel of pears, 2 and a half pails of peppers, and tomatoes, but done with canning for the night. Quiet night...grandson playing pep band at the HS football game, granddaughter at work. So just little granddaughter and us. Pizza will be arriving soon. And possibly the neighbor will be coming by to pick up seven kittens.
