Loooong day! We had to go to a birthday party in Choctaw Oklahoma 340 miles there and 340 miles home.

The same as every day!
Hello folks, hope you are warm and happy in your corner of the world. Up to my eyes writing this weather- just cleaned out the hens, planted garlic and covered some outdoor beds with cardboard to keep weeds down over the winter, and the cats off the raised beds. Planning a bit of baking later, a Biscoff apple crumble and maybe flap jacks or something for lunch boxes. Dinner is ready in the slow cooker, a chicken curry. Had a poem published in a 'real' book - I entered an international competition by a British publishing company and was shortlisted. The books arrived this week. College stuff is interesting, but full on- I'll miss it after May, I'm in my final year unless I go on to do a Masters, and that will depend on finances. But doesn't everything?! :)

Today is the gun club's annual turkey shoot. I was going to help out but I woke up sick.
Body aching, coughing, and I feel like crap.
I'm going to sit in my chair or lay in bed like I always do when I get sick.
Husband is sick too, hope you feel better
I banned him from the kitchen and told him to wear a face mask so he doesn't cough and sneeze all over ....yes they are good enough for that!!

It's very cold out, definitely feels like January and we are burning a ton of wood and feeding a ton of hay. It this keeps up we will have to get another load of each

We did manage to get the animals to the auction yesterday but just dropped them off. Son came along to back up the trailer which I am absolutely useless for. There was hardly anyone there so we will probably get terrible prices even if they were nice animals. Oh well. We sent the big goat buck ( last year he would have sold for around $400) , 3 little goats, a little buck and 2 lambs. I have been checking on livestock auction websites for the last sales and they are not that good this year. Does this mean everyone is getting rid of their livestock for the winter so they don't have to feed expensive hay? This means prices will go way up next year for meat probably. One of our neighbors that had about 100 or so sheep got rid of all of them. We sold a ton of meat this year so it isn't that demand is down. Supply must be up.

So what is everyone doing for Thanksgiving? It will be just the 3 of us this year but that's fine. Son already asked if we will play board games which we will assuming husband is feeling ok which he should be by then. I sure hope I don't get sick but so far I feel fine.
Daughter's husband has duty so they are staying home ( it's a 5 hour drive here)

. Tried to get cow feed out before cow could come over-- looked around and didn't see her. STarted cutting the bag open and she seemingly materialized out of nowhere. Came barreling around the truck. I had to dodge her horns bc she wanted that feed bag. LOL.
That's a big animals to try to get to the food! I have to put the food for the goats ( when I feed the grain) in the feeders when they are not there or they will run me over. They are not cow size but there is so many of them it gets scary. The sheep are bad too, they will all try to squeeze throught the barn door to get in

Been burning a lot of wood and feeding extra hay too!! It's just me and Hubby for Thanksgiving this year!! Locking the gate, cooking, enjoying time at home with the critters kids!! Sonya, I hope the three of you are well and healthy over Thanksgiving!!

You both don't need to be sick!!
yes that would be bad and son would be very not happy spending his week off taking care of the animals....plus he has homework of course still
It's not covid, we got some free tests in the mail a while back
I am pretty sure he just has a miserable cold. I had one this year also but in the spring

Probably just the seasonal crud as they call it down here!!

Quiet Sunday morning, just the way I like it... sunshine streaming through the pines, almost time to feed the wild birds and dump hot water into the frozen birdbaths. Chilly nights here lately, I've been wrapping the fruit trees & blackberry vine with plastic sheets every night for protection. So far, they seem to be doing okay. The hot pepper plant is still in the mud room, I put it out on the back step every day when the sun gets high enough in the sky... its leaves are starting to fall off, but we'll see if the trunk and branches survive the winter. If not, no big deal, I'll simply germinate some pepper seeds early next spring. As for later today, I'm thinking decent food, maybe some cold beer, and a choice between TV or a good Western novel...

P.S. Still cold enough outside that the kittens declined to go out, though Tiger & Crackhead did, but they're big cats with lots of fur and "insulation." Here are the three knucklehaids on the Mexican blanket next to me... :)

Note torn-up Chinese Walmart curtain in background, the thing is STILL taking a BEATING, lol...

Got home last night after transitioning from graveyard to day shift, working a 9 1/2 hour shift, and driving six hours to get home. In the midst of all that I was so exhausted that I forgot to take my basal (long lasting) insulin before I fell asleep. Luckily I had a fast acting bolus in my system that held my blood glucose down for several hours, but I woke up early to high alarms from my sensor this morning. Then the sensor went on the fritz a half hour later. Now I get to spend the rest of the morning drinking a crap ton of water and sticking my finger every 45 minutes to monitor the situation. It's a serious concern, as DKA can set in pretty quickly if the body runs out of insulin, but I caught it within 4 hours of the start of the rise in my blood glucose so I'm feeling pretty confident that I'm in good shape. The sensor came back on line a half hour ago and is showing that my efforts to correct my BG are working, and finger stick tests confirm it. My BG is still dangerously high though so I'll continue drinking at least a liter of water every 45 minutes to flush any ketones out of my system. Later when things get stabilized I'll head to Walmart to refill my prescription for a new box of sensors and a new transmitter.

My blood glucose level is coming down. I had it on a nice, gradual drop but suddenly it kicked into overdrive and it's falling like a rock. Apparently I must have overcorrected for the high BG level. Now I have to prepare for a possible hypoglycemia event. This day is not turning out at all the way I planned...

Wow, sometimes life gets complicated. My wife is type one from last year as a side effect of viral infection probably the china flu. She almost died from lack of potassium after drinking lots and lots of water and having undiagnosed diabetes.
The routines sometimes blend in and with tiredness or something normal going on important steps can be missed.
Hunkered down with single digit temps so outside chores are cut to a minimum altho I am cleaning out part of our pantry and have some old oatmeal cooking up for our chickens. Throwing in odds and ends that are way past good by date so the cluckers should have a feast.

@montanabill Your wife is pretty new to T1 and from experience I know the learning curve is steep. If y'all ever have questions, I've got almost 35 years of experience with this disease and you can send me a PM here. I'm not a doctor, but I've got a lot of practical experience and if I don't have any answers I can point you in the right direction...

We always have a couple of bottles of good orange juice in the fridge. My wife has done long term care as a RN and swears by orange juice to bring people back to normalcy. Do you have your BG sensing Badger at your side? They bite you if your BG gets off
Temps might get up to freezing so it's back out to the plywood shack to weld up some more christmas presents to sell, horse lovers are a easy sell;

Lol I do have my BG sensor, Dexcom G6. One of my coworkers says it's like having a wife with me 24/7, because it's always bitching at me!🤣

I'm not a big fan of orange juice or other fruit juices for treating hypoglycemia. It does work quickly, which is good, but I find that there are two outcomes from using it:

#1, my BG skyrockets and stays high
#2, I get a nice little bump in my BG and then the bottom falls out again.

The other problem with juice is that it's terribly inconvenient when you're on the go. I know some T1s who drag a backpack full of crap with them, everywhere they go. After all these years, my kit all fits in the left front pocket of my jeans for a day trip.

Tell your wife best wishes from me. Her previous medical knowledge will hopefully serve her well.

@Spikedriver be careful there, especially as your potassium levels can drop right along with your blood sugar if it happens too quickly. May want to get some electrolyte replacement (like powerade zero or G2 without the added sugar) to make sure it stabilizes - Can also take a magnesium replacement as that also drops. Hope you do ok today.

I'm currently holed up in the RV, it's not supposed to get above freezing for the next 2 days.
The boys are headed into town to get some propane and will finish hooking up my washer and dryer for me. We are headed to Scotland in about a week for our 10th wedding anniversary, so I'm hammering out the itinerary for that.
Hopefully this afternoon we can finish building out the framing for the solar panels. We need to get that up and running.

Already done. I keep a Powerade zero in the fridge for just such an occasion, and I have Squincher packets as well. I'm about to pop a multivitamin too. Normally I take those in the evening, but I didn't take one yesterday because they were buried in my luggage while I was on the road. I figure, now is as good a time as any to take one...

You know what you're doing! Hope you feel better and can take it easy today.

I'm jealous of your trip! I have long wanted to visit Caithness, Orkney, and the Shetlands because my Norse ancestors have ties to that region of Scotland. In the 1400s, this was the clan's stronghold. It's just a ruin now, but I'd love to stand in the middle of it and hopefully feel a connection to them..
