I found a roll of homemade sugar cookies in the freezer, so will bake them this morning. I'm feeling like baking more lately.

Looked at local grocery flyers and they were not impressive.
Didn't do the quickcrete yesterday. Will do it this morning since it will be much warmer.
Going to visit a friend and his mom. She is on hospice and DH knew her during his childhood.
Will thaw Thanksgiving dinner items.
I really have little to do today. Maybe put up nativity.

Knocking out chores so I can go ride, the bike is already out of its shed and I'm loading the saddlebags for today's adventure. I was studying my handy-dandy trail map earlier, and there's a whole WORLD of trails to be explored up there, and the good news is that many of the best trails (in terms of popularity) can be accessed from my favorite twisty road, or at least it leads in the right direction to pick up other roads which lead to those trails, lol. Today, I'll be riding off Rio Penasco Road, which leads to friggin' awesome trails I'm exploring today. Afterward, I'll be heading over to Highways 130 & 24, then dropping down the range into the Tularosa Basin on an unpaved road which dumps out onto US-54 not far from my home. All paved roads have heller twisties, while at least two of the trails are ATV/UTV & dirt biking trails, nothing wider than 50" allowed by law, lol. We're talking SE-WIOUS forest trails here, better pull an equipment check: 😒

INSULATED & ARMORED RIDING SUIT & HELMET?---CHECK!!!

LOADED PISTOL?---CHECK!!!

BEAR SPRAY?---CHECK!!!

PICNIC LUNCH?---CHECK!!!

COLD BEER ON ICE?---CHECK!!!

HELLER CHRONIC?---CHECK!!!

Looks like I'm good to go, just gotta get cleaned up and don my suit of armor, lol... I'm timing my transit on the two main target trails today so the sun is high in the sky when I'm on those trails, that'll be better for catching sun and better for taking primo pics! These trails are VERY popular in the summer, so I know there's magnificent scenery involved! The other trail I plan on taking as I descend from the range looks to be the standard graded dirt & gravel road, there might even be some homes along it, we shall see. Before I log out and get ready to ride, I wanna thank Pearl & Amish Heart for their suggestions to remove the turkey from the fridge (done last night, and it was still frozen solid this morning, lol) and to have a cooler nearby in case I need to cool the thawed turkey (already done, I have two huge coolers which can easily accommodate a 23-lb. bird). Y'all are awesome, and remember, I always pay my debts, no matter how small, lol. Sometimes, with cash, it takes me awhile to pay 'em, but they get paid nevertheless! 😉
Y'ALL BE GOOD, I'M OFF TO HAVE FUN... OR GET KICKED BY AN ELK, MAULED BY A BEAR, ETC!!! :dancing:

PICS LATER, YOUSE KNUCKLEHAIDS!!! CUZ I LUV YA THAT MUCH, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! DAMN.

Boss dropped a bomb on me last night, more details this morning. I've got a month to do all the planning and get quotes to install BDA systems in 5 buildings. BDAs allow radio signals 2 ways in buildings that are otherwise dead zones. Bad news for fire department and 1st responders.
2 of the buildings aren't even completed yet. And then if we get funding, have them all purchased and installed by the end of September.
Apparently this has been a thing for months and no one bothered to tell me that I'm responsible for it all.
Leavin work early and going camping for the weekend.

Found that in front of the barn yesterday morning. It was stiff but could not have been there more than overnight. It was shot in the side, some hunter missed the vital organs....
So we processed it and it's going to the dogs , would be a shame to waste a nice big buck like that. The meat looked still good enough to eat ( for us) but I don't want to take a chance....
What luck! I wonder why the hunter didn't follow it after he shot it.

Ran to the store yesterday to get the last things for tomorrow's dinner- carrots and green beans. I did buy a turkey to go in the freezer. Buy is a strong word. More like got it for free. I had store rewards points saved up and the turkey was on sale. I ended up having enough points to cover the sale price. I did find frozen hearts and gizzards so I got those for the dogs. Our stores don't carry that type of meat so it was pretty cheap. If they have any after the holiday I will clean them out. Makes great dog and cat food.

Made the trip to my folks' house this morning with the girls and the dogs. We spent the morning getting the buns set up with water and pellets for the next few days. I bred one of my does last night while I was doing the evening check. She was not happy to be in the buck's cage so I think I will use the neutral playpen from now on. I wanted to breed my other doe this morning but I didn't have the energy to set up the play pen and get them both out of their cages. I will do it when we get back home.

Roo made the apple pie with my mom and now the girls are making corn husk angels. Now we are just hanging out before the hustle of cooking in the morning.

We got word that my Great Aunt in Abeline Kansas past away last night. My parents left to go out there this morning. We have too much going to go out for the service. We normally go to my parents home for Thanksgiving since they are out of town we are preparing for Thanksgiving lunch for 3. I came home early today to help Alexandra with the baking and such.

More digging trees today and answered a question that was nagging at my....

Why are there so many trees not planted in a matrix?

One common persimmon dominated the raised bed.

In its shadow are all the random small trees.

20221123_162038_HDR.jpg

After digging I realized those small trees were clones growing from root remnants of the persimmons I had transplanted last year!

Since they are too small to transplant to The Ridge I potted them up and will bury the pots to overwinter.

Tomorrow I should dig more.

Re:Thanksgiving

The DIL volunteers for holiday and overtime pay at the hospital. So Thanksgiving dinner is scheduled for Sunday for my side of the family.

But ...

The Princess wanted to invite 9-10 people. Our kitchen isn't big enough and rather than use the second kitchen she will host another dinner tomorrow for four. She has a turkey breast
Tomorrow and a turkey for Sunday.

Ben

We used to eat persimmons in Virginia, always a tree here or there in the woods, @Neb .
We (my daughter, son and I) were expecting at least 2 of their sibs and two littles and daughters-in-law but things are not working out. Somebody has strept or flu and I don't know what is up with the other couple. My recently married daughter is coming without her husband because he is a chef and promised their neighbor who just lost his dad that he would help them cook (guy doesn't know how to do Thanksgiving and his mom is not into it this year). I used to have at least 15 people here for Thanksgiving but things change, or people can't get leave, or afford to travel, or whatever. There is nothing like the flavor of my Thanksgiving meal, so not sure when that will ever stop.
I've made the cranberry relish, got the bread sitting out to get stale (yeah I do), the turkey is thawed and shortly I'll get the giblets out, cook them, make the dressing balls, keep cleaning.
@hashbrown sorry for your great aunt's passing. Hope you and your family have an enjoyable time together just hanging out at home.
Great score on the turkey, @Grimm

Animal chores, cleaning, laundry, and cooking all day, Just ordered takeout from the amish place, and it'll be ready soon. Unfortunately grandson is working there tonight and took our order. Let's see if I can pick it up without having to talk to him. Folding tables are set out, just have to do the turkey and two types of potatoes and relish plate tomorrow. Little granddaughter still coughing like a lunatic. Nebulizer and cough syrup

Wow,CLOTH NAPKINS and everything. FANCY
You ought to see the table we eat on most of the time. You have to set your plate down carefully, or it might slide off of the newspaper pile under it. And be mindful so that the plant that was just drug in from the back deck (because it was too cold outside) doesn't drop leaves into your soup. Be sure to set you drink glass down with precision, because you don't want to spill it on all important mail on the table.

We're not exactly formal around here.

Daughter has to work too many shifts to come home, so going over to see her and have dinner in a restaurant.
So different from last year. Had everyone here, cooked a turkey, the whole deal. Now no Husband and no Father. Little did I know as I sat there and gave thanks for all of them that I wouldn't be allowed to keep them much longer.
So blessed to have Daughter!
Tried to go for a ride today, the weather warmed up and most of the snow has melted. Bike wasn't running right so didn't go far before turning back for home. Got within 100' of the driveway and it quit. With spectacular noises that don't bode well for fixability. Had to get off and push it home. It's completely dead now, can't even get the lights to come on. Yay.

If it has only been overnight it it good for eating. Many a hunter shot the deer at night and either fund it the next morning or returned the next morning to get it out of to the truck. Many more hunters gut it and hang it in a tree to begin the "aging" process of the meat. Meat processing plants are not allowed to wait, but they are "guided" by the rules of the health department.

I would eat it, but the dogs will love it.

Woke for a bit after crashing last night... I was too tired to post pics of yesterday's ride, so I'll do it now before I catch a few more ZZZs. Later, I'll be cooking that bird and sharing quality time with the cats & kittens... no big plans today, as the forecast says we have a 20% chance of rain or snow later today & tomorrow. Good day to stay home and count my blessings, lol... hope y'all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

second trip to the credit union , all accounts frozen . computer got hacked ! Have to change numbers on all accounts and credit cards plus I'm my mothers POA , her accounts are attached to mine . Won't be able to do any on line banking until I have my computer professionally cleaned and certified clean. Those guys are getting real good.... didn't lose anything , caught it in time .
BEWARE !!!!!!!!! .... Tried to make my payment to Homesteading , had to add funds to my paypal account to pay . right after that my credit union fraud dept called right away to check my activity ..... They charged 4 X-boxes to my amazon account and hit my checking for $2400. So, here we go , gotta get all account no. changed , passwords changed . Now all my accounts are frozen till monday. I was lucky with the credit card , the one I use on the internet has a $500. cap on it and CU picked that up right away ...... Everybody should have a second card with a low cap on it to use on the internet . If it was my reg. card I'd have to take out a mortgage to pay that off.
Its something to think about , getting a low cap card for the internet.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I use non-reloadable Visa gift cards for all internet purchases and the few bills I pay online!

I don't have to tell you to enjoy the time with your daughter but I kinda know how you feel. Holidays haven't been the same for me since what I refer to as the "dying time." In a 5 year period, we buried 8 family starting with my grandmother and brother and ending with my mother. The holidays have never felt right to me after that. Right before my mom passed, my brother and SIL moved to their new home in Upstate NY. They are 325 miles away. We tried going back and forth with them coming down here or us going up there, but weather gets a little dicey. Dad and I would go to various cousins but it wasn't holiday like to us so it really was just dinner with them. They have different traditions than us. One of my cousins' group does the going to a restaurant route. She loves it because there's no prep, no cleanup. Only downside is no leftover turkey for turkey on good Jewish Rye bread the next day (or at 11 o'clock that night ;) )

Ok, the big deer mystery is solved. The hunter did shoot it dead and dropped it off at the barn...lol
Yesterday one of our Amish neighbors down the road came by and asked if anyone had dropped off a dead deer....
Turns out he met some guy down the road somewhere that had the dead dear on his truck and asked our neighbor if he wanted it. So neighbor said yes and the hunter was supposed to drop it off, but got the wrong house somehow, or not even a house but our barn.

I don't get why anyone wants to shoot deer and then not use it , that's just weird to me. I don't like killing things but do if it is for a good reason ( like food) or if they are varmints like racoons

We told the Amish neighbor, sorry it's been turned into dog food. I think at that point the meat really would have been questionable. Who knows how long before he dropped it off the deer was shot.
