I don't have to tell you to enjoy the time with your daughter but I kinda know how you feel. Holidays haven't been the same for me since what I refer to as the "dying time." In a 5 year period, we buried 8 family starting with my grandmother and brother and ending with my mother. The holidays have never felt right to me after that. Right before my mom passed, my brother and SIL moved to their new home in Upstate NY. They are 325 miles away. We tried going back and forth with them coming down here or us going up there, but weather gets a little dicey. Dad and I would go to various cousins but it wasn't holiday like to us so it really was just dinner with them. They have different traditions than us. One of my cousins' group does the going to a restaurant route. She loves it because there's no prep, no cleanup. Only downside is no leftover turkey for turkey on good Jewish Rye bread the next day (or at 11 o'clock that night ;) )
Everything tastes better on good Jewish Rye!!♥️

More digging trees today and answered a question that was nagging at my....

Why are there so many trees not planted in a matrix?

One common persimmon dominated the raised bed.

In its shadow are all the random small trees.

After digging I realized those small trees were clones growing from root remnants of the persimmons I had transplanted last year!

Since they are too small to transplant to The Ridge I potted them up and will bury the pots to overwinter.

Tomorrow I should dig more.

Re:Thanksgiving

The DIL volunteers for holiday and overtime pay at the hospital. So Thanksgiving dinner is scheduled for Sunday for my side of the family.

But ...

The Princess wanted to invite 9-10 people. Our kitchen isn't big enough and rather than use the second kitchen she will host another dinner tomorrow for four. She has a turkey breast
Tomorrow and a turkey for Sunday.

What do you do with the Simmons? My mom made bread with them when I was a kid and a neighbor made wine from them. We mostly threw them at each other! We would cut a stick about 4 ft long sharpen the end and poke one on the sharpened end. With the right whip on the stick you could throw one two hundred yards. 😁😁😁

Well, Ben and The Princess may have a new Hashbrown inspired hobby!!🤔😃

Persimmon jam, persimmon butter (like apple butter), spiced persimmons, persimmon cake, bread, cookies...
Just check Pinterest. LOL

Not my department.

The Princess decides what gets grown for what.

I just have to figure out how to help it grow.

Someone's leave was approved so they'll be by tomorrow.
:clapping:🥳🥳
Haven't seen them since May/June (in person). So thankful they were able to come home.
One son and his kids were able to make it while wife was sick with virus/flu. Sent food home with them. Daughters cleaned things up for me. It was a good day and no tears. My grandson is another matter and unfortunately I now find him annoying and irritating to be around, mostly because I had to keep reigning him in from his escapades, smart mouth and disrespect. I mean, he's too young to act like that.
Good food, good drink and dessert, and now just chillin'. No injuries with knives or hot ovens. Hope everyone is having a pleasant evening.

Went to my parents house for lunch. All my family was there. Had a great time. Got back to the camper tonight and chilling out.
Cousin from Fl in coming to visit tomorrow. She's in town for a week and we get her for the day. Gonna hangout at the campsite and burn some firewood
Sounds like a great place for some great visit time!!

Regular american persimmon, Diospyros virginiana? I love eating them, get ripe in september.

Coyotes love them too, can’t resist them in fact. They’ll start coming in at dusk, heck, sometimes in broad daylight. They’ll stop by everyday. 173Yds from my dad’s back porch is a persimmon tree. I sighted his rifle for 175yrds. Open pasture, the tree on a small hill.

Funny thing, persimmon tree’s are male and female. Have to have two trees, only one will bloom and bear fruit. The other produces pollen.

Don't know about the Japanese persimmon trees sold at nurseries. I've heard their fruit tastes different than american. I seen it, much larger fruit, almost orange sized.

I made tinctures this afternoon, turmeric. Watched a little football, a tradition.

I'm happy as can be with the work done on my guitar last week, thilled actually. It literally sounds like a completely different guitar. I'm still amazed. Upped the volume and especially the clarity by more than 10%. I'm hearing tones I've never heard before.

The guy in TN does incredible work. Just wish I knew guitar makers like him existed years ago and how to get in contact. I've had crappy guitar work done through the years. Friends have had it happen. You get gun-shy about letting anyone get near an instrument. Just because their sign says "factory authorized service" doesn't mean they know what they are doing.

Onward... I ordered some headphones last week. They'll allow me to play music into one ear and hear what I'm playing with the other. My old set finally died a few years ago. Time for an early xmas present.

The campground is great. My parents brought us here when sis and I were kids. Wife has enjoyed it too. Lake is over the ridge and a mile from the road. Other than the folks camping its as quite as can be. Lots of deer. Plenty of trails to hike, over 30 miles.
Wonderful place to kick back for a long weekend.
Here is a couple of sunset pics from last night.

Home today! Not many more days off in the foreseeable future! Besides the holiday extras I have WAY over scheduled myself!!😮 Took on two more cleaning jobs, both older people, know both of them. May lose one of my older ladies, she is probably moving to her daughter's house! But for a while I'll be working 6+7 day weeks. Today I'm catching up on laundry and stuff around the house since it will be raining. Definitely a nap in the plans!!

Wondering about a pot of chicken and dumplings that was dropped off . The gesture was sweet but I am looking at this pot a little sideways
I have never see chicken an dumplings where cream of chicken or mushroom was used . Is this a thing?
In my dumplings we only use chicken stock and spices
This is not bad tasting but it does not taste like chicken an dumplings
Maybe I am just spoiled

I ate well the last two days but I am paying for it this morning. Wednesday I had an early Thanksgiving with a lady I have been seeing. She made prime rib and I made mashed potatoes and we ate well. Then yesterday my family went to the nursing home to have Thanksgiving with Mom. The home has a 30x40 meeting room that families can reserve for gatherings and it has been a godsend for us, as otherwise we couldn't get everyone together in the same room when my nieces and nephews come with all their kids. My sisters in law brought ham and turkey and of course I stuffed myself. Today I am experiencing some gastric distress! Oh well, it was worth it...

Just different than normal!!

Cold cr@ppy day outside, smells like snow but I'm not sure we'll see it... good day for doing laundry, maybe give myself a haircut later with the repaired clippers. Oh, yeah, gotta trim all fingernails & toenails today, I noticed they're getting long, lol. TMI? Not for this crew of hardcore homesteaders... and a few wannabes like myself, lol. ;)

Yesterday's meal was excellent, today I have heaps of leftovers to enjoy, no cooking involved, just reheating! The turkey turned out nice & juicy, and the homemade gravy was dee-licious! In fact, everything turned out great, even the stuffing with beer & cranberry juice added to the mix, lol. I loaded my plate too, never did finish it but I saved the rest!

I still have one dish of stuffing left over from the first bird we cooked, it is smothered in country gravy and I'm thinking of macking it with some reheated turkey and green bean casserole! For brunch, perhaps after a cold beer! I'm still working on my hot tea right now, but I have no plans to go anywhere in this cr@ppy weather, so I will definitely imbibe later!

Hope y'all enjoyed your holiday dinner yesterday! The cats & I were stuffed afterward, so once I cleaned up the kitchen I went straight to ye olde rack to read a Western... didn't get very far before I fell asleep, lol. Had some vivid dreams while my brain was under that tryptophan: the last dream had a hot gal in a blue dress at a Pilot truck stop, "HUH?!?" o_O

First of all, I never liked Pilots, except maybe the one on the west side of Des Moines, I usually hit the Petro or Flying J if I had a choice, and an occasional T/A, so I'm not sure where or why the Pilot entered my dream. But I remembered those details because Crackhead woke me suddenly by banging a cabinet door, lol. He does that sometimes... 😒

Well, I'd better grab a shower and get my laundry started... I do need to wash clothes, the hamper is nearly full. I want my riding jersey clean for tomorrow as well, in case the weather improves and I run down to Red Sands OHV Area to pal around with those folks I met on Wednesday. If they're still there, and IF the weather improves, I ain't ridin' in this gray slop! 😎

Three days off! Helped dad mop his kitchen floor this morning. Wash some of the fleece. Combed said fleece. I’m so behind on getting it combed/prepped for spinning. Just put more into soak. Pretty much it’s gonna be a fiber day.

Tommorrow will be cemetery day. Have to put out 6 blankets and an evergreen cross. I take care of my grandparents, mother and brother’s graves. I also help out a cousin who doesn’t live in the area anymore—her parents and husband. The cross goes to my great-grandmothe. I promised my grandmother as long as I lived her and was able our dead would be taken care of.

The Princess listed our rental property on Zillow first thing this morning with plans to do nothing the rest of the day. 10 minutes latter she had a request to see the place. 20 minutes latter she got another request.

So we showed the place to both today and the first filled out an application. We took down the listing moments ago. Hopefully we may have tenant soon.

So much for doing nothing today.

Ben

That's how it went when we sold our New Mexico house a few years back. And it was covid time, so we continually had to leave the house, and it had to stay clean. Was glad it sold quickly.
Cancelled the turkey butchering that was for tomorrow. My throat is on fire and my head hurts, and coughing is another thing. I do a necessary chore, then sit to rest an hour. It's seen me through the day. Thank God for leftovers tonight.

Feel better soon Amish, everyone around here has the same symptoms.
