I saw that on YouTube. I'm almost jealous!!

@hashbrown Jake deserves it he is a hardworking young man :) .

We got the car cleaned up and running nice! Jake had to dip into his savings for about $300 in parts and we listed it for sale or trade. A car like that doesn't really meet our lifestyle or our gravel road. We plan on buying something else and keep flipping them for the next 3 or 4 years until he is of driving age. By that time he should have a nice nest egg and a decent knowledge of automotive repair. We are picking up a Ford Expedition next weekend for $500 I figure we can have it purring in a day.

All cleaned up and ready to sell!

Wish I could be that confident about fixing...whenever I think I can fix something it turns out to be a big problem that's out of my league. Especially because it seems every problem is electrical these days...

Thanks Amish. Much better today. Daughter and I got boston butt and chicken canned up . Also got all veggies chopped and ready to make chicken soup to can tomorrow. While soup is going we have a case of tomatoes that we bought at the produce stand run by the lady that lives a couple of miles from us.We are going to make salsa.

I'm not a mechanic or at least a trained one, I'm just hard headed enough not to give up easily. It's worked for me my entire life, probably takes me 10 times longer but I'll figure it out eventually.

It finally happened… My 85yro dad took a header on the stairs tonight.

5 years ago dad hired his grandson to convert their bath to a walk in shower. I brought the subject up then but he didn’t want to hear it.

This house was built as a duplex after the tornado in 74. Up stairs is a 3 bedroom 2 bath with 300sqft more living space than downstairs. The downstairs is a 3 bedroom 1 bath. The extra 300sqft is shared spaces, washer/dryer, freezers. One room was built with heavy shelving, we used to can almost everything we ate.

The stairs from upstairs comes down into the canning room.

Its been 2 years since my mom was able to walk down the stairs. Tonight dad was bringing down a load of wash. He had ahold of the rail on his left. He missed the last step and it spun him. He hit hard, the floor is a concrete slab with a 40yrold scrap piece of linoleum laid out like a rug (not glued).

The worst part was his back which hit the home built heavy wooden shelving for can goods.

He had a spot about 10inches across on his back of lite roadrash. Nothing was broken, thankfully, but he’ll be black and blue for a week.

Their only entrance is from the back deck which is 6ft high w/stairs. 2 years ago my mom was going down those stairs when her feet slipped out from under her, she basically sat down on the stairs but she could not get up.

She was out there in the hot summer sun for an hour before dad noticed she was missing.

In the last 5 years I’ve redone most of my house. The shower is a walk in… I just put down new wood flooring in all my living spaces except the bedroom. I have two bedrooms I use, both 12ftx12ft. The wall in between isn’t load bearing. I rewired the entire downstairs over the last 2 years, everything is up to modern code.

All that is needed is new drop in ceiling, paint over all the paneling, redo the bedrooms into an extra-large bedroom w/ walk in closets, new flooring and it’s move in ready.

They would never have to walk up or down stairs again, it has all the living space they need. Even with new kitchen cabinets this would cost less than $5K.

Tonight I had just hit my mute button (dumb commercial) when I heard a strange noise. A few seconds later I thought I heard my name being called. The fall knocked the wind out of him… If I hadn’t hit the mute button when I did he could have laid back there an hour!

Think they will listen to me and do what needs to be done?

I see broken hips in my future…

The best part this, Saturday dad woke up with a UTI, went to the ER, got antibiotics. Antibiotics always make him dizzy. Was he dizzy yesterday… yes. Was he dizzy this morning when I checked on him? Yes!

What do you do when you are dizzy from medication you are taking? I know! I’ll carry a load of laundry down a dark stairwell and hope I don’t take a header!

You try to raise your parents right Peanut but in the end they do what they want.

Mom was telling Dad to slow down or he'd have another stroke. We lost him on the 30th, he was 89 and put in a full days work doing what he loved. He might have lived longer if he had followed everyones advice but I believe he would have died long ago if he had done the work he enjoyed so.

Today we started the morning with DH going to his physiotherapy appointment and then we went to one of the little supermarkets and stocked up on capsicums on clearance for $2 kg which is totally unheard of here for such a low price so we bought the 4 heaviest bags weighing just under 2 kg as they were all marked at the same price. They did have a few little marks on their skins but nothing to worry about and were nice and crisp. We also returned a back brace DH purchased from a pharmacy there as it wasn't really comfortable for him and he ordered another one from the physiotherapist funded by DVA and got money out of the bank for our spurge and home emergency kitty.

Got home and DH had a sleep. Just finished slicing all of the capsicums up and have 9 more bags for the freezer for meals. We then bagged the sausages we purchased yesterday in meal sized portions and put them in the freezer.

Oh forgot to say the good news for the day is that the RBA has reduced the cash rate by another 25 basis points and our bank passed along another 19 basis point reduction in our home loan interest rate probably effective on the middle of the month. Not good news for our economy though as people have stopped spending money and our savings will get a downgrade in interest rates again.

Went and checked on dad this morning, he could barely move either arm. The road rash is from shoulder blade to shoulder blade so affects both arms.

My concern, he was breathing very shallow as we talked, as if a deep breath would be to painful. Last night as I put medicine on the road rash, I touched one spot next to his right shoulder blade. He grunted in pain. I’m worried he may have cracked a rib next to his spine.

I gave him a tip before leaving… “dad, next time you fall… fall on the laundry!” :D

@Caribou sorry for your loss. Your right, dad and I raised cattle several years after he was no longer able. Reason, I've seen too many people retire from regular jobs and be dead in less that 2 years... As long has he felt like trying I didn't interfere.

wow I'm so glad hubby and I thought ahead years ago when we built this place! No stairs at all except to get off 2 of the porches/decks and a ramp at the front door. Also a walk-in shower. We have a regular tub but I'd love to get one of those walk-in tubs they advertise now as a replacement.
I make sure hubby has his phone with him when he's outside doing whatever he' doing in case he needs me. He could hurt himself bad and I'd never know. He's always outside messing with power tools and heavy equipment.

that fall sounds bad even though it may not look that bad. both men and women get brittle bones when they age. Have you tried wrapping your dad's torso to maybe help @Peanut ? or would he be stubborn about that too?

You try to raise your parents right Peanut but in the end they do what they want.

Condolences on the loss of your father. May the God of all comfort walk closel6 with you as you mourn

I am so sorry to hear this, Caribou.

Would he go to the doctor if you were willing to take him?

it can be a little bit of a job

Definitely! Two large crockpots usually nets about 22-24 pints. So I use the big Presto pressure canner and the Instant Pot.

Went to thrift store this morning for the monthly Senior sale. Now home and don't have any big plans except maybe to sleep a little. I do have enough yellow squash to make a recipe of the mock pineapple, so that might happen. Or tomorrow.

Not feeling up to par today. My blood glucose was high this morning - it was low in the middle of the night, and I overcompensated. So I have been kind of a worthless turd so far today. Feeling a bit better now, so this evening we'll see about getting some things done. I've got an appointment to make sure my heel problem is plantar fasciitis and not something else tomorrow morning.

Hope you feel better soon Spike.

@Amish Heart the joys of having fair skin/redhead in my case, is all this sun damage. Ask your doctor about Efudix as a cream treatment over 3 - 4 weeks. It attacks all of the carcinomas and kills them all at once rather than having them burnt off individually and no scarring either. Best to ask your doctor if this would suit you better.

I always wear a broad brimmed hat, long sleeved shirts and jeans even in winter when I go out in the sun and work in the coolest parts of the day too.

I might dare even show you all how part of my face looks during the treatment  .

I have appt tomorrow for double freezing one on nose. Been dealing with them for years. :(. He wanted to do surgery  and I said whats second best? I've had lots of surgeries but never had one like they wanted to do. o_O

Hi, Meerkat! I am glad to hear that your knee is not as bad as it could have been.

Thank you and me too. First time it did a few years ago I was in so much pain I laid down on ER floor and cried. I'm a germ fanatic and never cry so for me to lay on that nasty er floor I had to learn something and that is catch it before it swells and hurts from head to toe.:ghostly:I messaged it, used ace bandage, ice and rest.

Caribou, I'm sorry to hear you lost your dad. My prayers are with you and your family
Peanut, I hate to hear about your dads fall, that is scary. Glad you are able to help them out. Prayers for his healing and for your strength to care for them.
Meer, glad your knee is better. Always good to heal up.
Spike, I pray your foot improves quickly.
