It finally happened… My 85yro dad took a header on the stairs tonight.

5 years ago dad hired his grandson to convert their bath to a walk in shower. I brought the subject up then but he didn’t want to hear it.

This house was built as a duplex after the tornado in 74. Up stairs is a 3 bedroom 2 bath with 300sqft more living space than downstairs. The downstairs is a 3 bedroom 1 bath. The extra 300sqft is shared spaces, washer/dryer, freezers. One room was built with heavy shelving, we used to can almost everything we ate.

The stairs from upstairs comes down into the canning room.

Its been 2 years since my mom was able to walk down the stairs. Tonight dad was bringing down a load of wash. He had ahold of the rail on his left. He missed the last step and it spun him. He hit hard, the floor is a concrete slab with a 40yrold scrap piece of linoleum laid out like a rug (not glued).

The worst part was his back which hit the home built heavy wooden shelving for can goods.

He had a spot about 10inches across on his back of lite roadrash. Nothing was broken, thankfully, but he’ll be black and blue for a week.

Their only entrance is from the back deck which is 6ft high w/stairs. 2 years ago my mom was going down those stairs when her feet slipped out from under her, she basically sat down on the stairs but she could not get up.

She was out there in the hot summer sun for an hour before dad noticed she was missing.

In the last 5 years I’ve redone most of my house. The shower is a walk in… I just put down new wood flooring in all my living spaces except the bedroom. I have two bedrooms I use, both 12ftx12ft. The wall in between isn’t load bearing. I rewired the entire downstairs over the last 2 years, everything is up to modern code.

All that is needed is new drop in ceiling, paint over all the paneling, redo the bedrooms into an extra-large bedroom w/ walk in closets, new flooring and it’s move in ready.

They would never have to walk up or down stairs again, it has all the living space they need. Even with new kitchen cabinets this would cost less than $5K.

Tonight I had just hit my mute button (dumb commercial) when I heard a strange noise. A few seconds later I thought I heard my name being called. The fall knocked the wind out of him… If I hadn’t hit the mute button when I did he could have laid back there an hour!

Think they will listen to me and do what needs to be done?

I see broken hips in my future…

The best part this, Saturday dad woke up with a UTI, went to the ER, got antibiotics. Antibiotics always make him dizzy. Was he dizzy yesterday… yes. Was he dizzy this morning when I checked on him? Yes!

What do you do when you are dizzy from medication you are taking? I know! I’ll carry a load of laundry down a dark stairwell and hope I don’t take a header!
OH, I Hope they will switch you spaces. It's sure strange becoming the parent to your parents. Hope he heals well.

The podiatrist said he's 99% sure my heel trouble is plantar fasciitis, based on the fact that I don't have symptoms of a stress fracture or any other issue that could cause my pain. Now I've got a bunch of stretches, ice regimen, etc. to do. Strangely, he said I am not to walk barefoot or in stocking feet, ever - not at all. Not even to go to the bathroom or get a drink. Ha - do you know how hard that is? I find I get up and then when I get back to my chair I remember I was supposed to put my shoes on...

Thank you to those who wished me well with my foot. The doc says it's pretty much 100% fixable.

Today I found some material online on special for $3.84 per metre and purchased some lovely floral material for making curtains with in the back room for a small window at the top of the stairs (with rails), another window at the side and another for double sliding door. $50 to make curtains for a whole room is a bargain as premade curtains here cost a fortune and would likely not fit the windows and sliding doors we have without getting them custom made.

We then went out into the garden for 2 hours and got the shade cloth attached with wire on half of the garden bed roof and now just have the other half to do tomorrow. We tried using our lighter tie wire but it was not strong enough so we used the fencing wire we took off the grape yard enclosure when we demolished that. I have worked out that all up for a 10 x 2.2 metre garden enclosure using mostly recycled materials and only buying some netting clips, 2 secondhand pipe clamps we bought at a yard sale and the shade cloth we have spent only $38.26. To have a tradesman do it for us it would have cost us $800 in labour for 10 hours work plus materials.

This afternoon I stain removed some clothing, put on a load of washing on in the washing machine and hung it on the clothesline to dry. DH spread some lime on 3 more of the garden beds and watered it in with saved grey water from our washing machine.

Tonight's dinner was rump steak and steamed peas, corn and capsicum.

If I walk barefoot at all or wear shoes with thin soles my heels hurt.

So far today, I've done laundry, got the carnitas in the slow cooker, done 3 eBay drafts plus animal and regular chores. Ready to help room mate pack up truck whenever he gets himself in gear. Today is my Birthday so I am going to rest and read for awhile now. 62 years! That's 15 years more than my mom got. Still miss her! I was 27 when she passed.

I'm so sorry about your dad, Caribou! And I hope your dad will be good, Peanut!

Thank goodness its fixable, get well soon Spike.

Month end reconciliations for b&b bookings with various online travel companies. Quarterly provincial sales tax returns. Worked on Sunday’s sermon. Mowed front and back. Pulled some chunks of rebar out of the ground (a previous owner used them to hold up picket fence around one of the flowerbeds).

Going to get the animal chores done and make husband some breakfast, and get our lawn chairs out to watch the parade this morning. More grandkids coming over later and we'll be having bratwurst and sauerkraut later with fireworks in the front yard. Offer signed and accepted on the school yesterday, supposed to close in 45 days! But the school is closing in 15 days. Almost there.

Great Amish. ENJOY!!!!!

Today we decided since DH's shoulders are sore from the wiring of the shade cloth on the garden enclosure to do more gentle pursuits today and did the housework for the week a day early.

DH vacuumed the whole house and I deep cleaned the bathroom and toilets. DH put on a load of washing in the washing machine and sprinkled lime on the remaining 3 garden beds and he watered it in with the grey water from the washing machine. We then folded up two loads of clean laundry and put it away. DH washed the dishes and cleaned the benches and I dried them and put them away.

Out to the shed we went and put together our new 2.5 kw air compressor and of course had to test it on pumping up 8 wheels on 2 of the garden carts and it worked really well and pressurises really quickly. We are glad we made the investment now rather than driving to the shop each time something goes flat as our other one stopped working.

Just finished ordering new pool cues and chalk for the RSL club to replace some old ones down there and then DH transferred the money from their account to ours to recoup the expenditure with permission from the president who asked us to order them. I found them on special on eBay so saved them probably a couple of hundred dollars over buying them locally. I try and source the cheapest and best for them as they are a not for profit organisation being a sub branch.

@Amish Heart exciting news and so happy for you.

@Meerkat 10.47 pm at night here in Australia so I have been awake for hours ;) .

Happy 4th of July to all.

I got some plastic heel cups from a sports physiotherapist, like the ones in the pics They cost me about $6 a pair, immediate pain relief in heel. Wore them continuously for six months never had a recurrence of plantar fasciitis.the cups provide enough shaping and support for all the micro tears to heal. FWIW, YMMV

Made our breakfasts
Then helped take the cover off the 5 ton army truck. Man is it humid and hot today. We had to come inside to cool down some
Picked up our 3 tons of pellets. Fella said that the price will be going up because hardwood sawdust is getting hard to come by. We paid $269/ton. They had cheaper but we like this kind because they're less " ashy" and the stove is easier to clean.
Still have to move the pellets into the shed
Planning on making bbq ribs today for supper
Its too hot and humid to go anywhere for "festivities" today. I'd rather stay home in the ac and out of the heat and crowds and traffic lol Besides I've seen plenty of fireworks before so its nothing new

Inn we may all need to pack away some of those for our prep stuff.
That is neat!

Went to Harbor Freight to look at some tools. Ended up getting a wheeled stool to use when working on cars, tractors, etc. Won't have to crawl around on my knees so much. Also picked up a small submersible pump to use in a Hydroponics system I'm looking to set up this fall. I'm hoping to grow maybe some peppers, cabbage, and greens over the winter. We'll see if it works or not.

Wife got a couple of steaks on her way home yesterday, so I'm gonna grill them while shes makes some twice baked taters for dinner tonight. Local news station is showing a fireworks display later tonight. It's usually pretty good for about 15-20 minutes. Too hot to do a whole lot today, plus gotta work tomorrow so we're just going to hang out here.
Hope everyone has a enjoyable and SAFE holiday.
