I got to drive like a cop in a cop car again today. It was kind of fun but the GMC Acadia doesn't handle or accelerate like a police package Chevy Tahoe. GF took her daughter to the new doctor office in the small town north of here, young lady issues and feeling run down and stuff for a while. Of course the daughter was nervous and the more the doctor and mom talked the more she began to stress and worry. She is 4'11 and barely 100 pounds at age 18. Add to that she was probably a couple pints low. Nurses couldn't get a vein to draw blood even after a few tries. Not feeling well, stress, worries, ..... then she passed out a couple times. GF's prior nursing and first responder training kicked in and she stepped in front of the nurses in the office to do way more than they were doing. Nothing against the nurses but it is probably very rare for them to experience such excitement from a young adult. Stabilized but she got an ambulance ride to the big hospital in the city. Ambulance crew couldn't even get an IV started. GF got out of the parking lot a few minutes ahead of the ambulance and made it 13 miles to our community a couple minutes ahead of the ambulance. I was at the corner waiting and jumped in the drivers seat to follow. I knew i wasn't gonna keep up the entire 30 mile drive but I did keep up until the first road construction area where they had the red light to limit traffic only one way or the other. The ambulance slowly went through the red light to continue but I waited until green, but I did walk up to the first couple cars in front of me and asked to go first to follow the ambulance and they let me by. Aside from one slow down in the one small town I had fun doing 80-ish on the wide open 2 lane highway, usually a 65mph zone. Drove careful through the city, just a bit over the speed limit but fortunately not much traffic. I obviously took a different route through the city because we had lost sight of the ambulance well before reaching town and we got to the ER only a few minutes after the ambulance and got back to the room the same time as the daughter did.
She is doing OK, they got a vein sticker specialist to establish an IV lock and gave her a couple pints and some IV's and a couple other meds and she is spending the night for observation. She should be released in the morning if all goes well and then she will go back to the original doctors office tomorrow when I go for my follow up appointment so he can see her again too. The doctor at the office is great but a tiny young adult being low on blood is something a family practitioner is not set up to handle.
Once they handed her off to the hospital staff I thanked all the paramedics on the ambulance. Told them I didn't break 1 law driving to town, said I broke about a dozen but did it carefully when no other traffic was around and that I enjoyed driving like a cop again. They laughed.
Spent the day at the hospital. Getting close to going home and checked my email and found out the
gift card I ordered a week ago for my daughters birthday that was supposed to be delivered 2 days ago....
today they said they couldn't deliver and the order needed to be resubmitted or however it was worded. Great, my daughters birthday is tomorrow (Thursday) and she already barely wants anything to do with me and I have to come up with a solution NOW. Leave the hospital, go to the store, get a
gift card and a birthday card and drive across town to hand her the card. Fortunately she goes to college here or I never would have been able to make that happen.
Aside from that, did pretty much nothing productive today. Gonna get a long hot shower and watch a few YouTube videos and get to sleep. Hopefully my favorite folk uploaded some new good videos, it's Wednesday so they should have.
