The day job has been kicking my butt, we have a big project that's supposed to kick off 8/1 and is rapidly becoming quite a beast. The good new is, I just got off the hook for traveling to Texas for it - not that I have anything against TX, I'd just rather spend a couple weeks there in November than July. I also have a lot I want to do in the yard the next little bit, and have some things going on at home I don't want to be away for.

Harvested about a pint of black raspberries from our little patch the last week or so - so far I've been doing good staying ahead of the birds. The rest of my gardens are producing fairly lamely, but sounds like that's pretty typical this season.

And speaking of things not working, our washing machine has randomly started quitting mid-way through the wash cycle. Control board and door lock (the most likely causes) come to $750, so it's just not cost effective to repair. Having replaced an oven and a dishwasher last month I'm pretty grumpy about another appliance going out.
NO TEXAS NOW!! ♥️

So, @TeeJ , you really should try it in the heat of the summer (Texas).
Brother, I feel your pain on the washer. I tried to do another load and ended up taking it out of the washer, kind of not soaking wet, to the laundromat to run it through so I could bring it back home and put it in my dryer. Mind you the offspring are still doing theirs just fine in the same washer. One of them even supervised me.
:great::good luck:
There are no signs telling you how much per load until you close the washer door. Paid $3.50 for a medium size load, couldn't do any adjustments on what I wanted to do (spin). A customer told me it was $8.50 to use the large washer. I didn't need the dryer so I don't know how much that costs.

Our young rooster started crowing today. Out of 14 chicks he seems to be the only one so far. Now to put up a add for a free rooster.
Our little garden has exploded from unseasonable rain and the weeds are trying to choke it out . Great way to start the day watering and walking thru the amazing growth.
We do tours and this week has been the group from hell so over dinner the wife and I decided to just tell them to keep their money it isn't working out for anybody......what a relief and good practice to put down limits for spoiled adults......life's too short to deal with mean people.

So this should be in 'how I did NOT save money today'. Town day- did my usual check of 3 supermarkets discount fridges. Only scored two packs of bagels at half price. Spent about €20 on some items I don't need immediately (for an upcoming family event)
Realised the supermarkets are really busy- odd for a mid-week in the summer. Only one check out open so huge queues, ended up going to self service which I never do, but the ticket on my car had run out. The queue behind me was huge and in my fluster I didn't use my money off vouchers- which was the whole reason I was there. Everything had a few more cents on it also since last week, so I've now spent 50 quid more than I intended. I'm going to have some lunch and take it out on a nettle patch I've been saving for such an occasion!

Those nettle patches have a way of sharpening perception. We even have them here in the rocky mountains of montana USA. Also recommended is buffalo petting for a diversion to get your mind off exploding food prices and scarcity.
Perhaps a nice cuppa and a biscuit?
Just a few miles from where I live are thousands of miles of this sort of meadows.

Day 1 of the quad excavation.

Stuff had just been pilled and the left door could not open.

View attachment 89778

Trust me there is a quad under that pile

View attachment 89779

Rearranged enough to get the other door open.

View attachment 89780

Dug deep enough to see the back left tire is low. Not flat.

View attachment 89782

For the most part I will be moving stuff to that cleaned out back porch until I can get the quad out. Then it will get moved back into the shed on the shelving that there for fertilizers etc. It used to be a nice organized shed. A goal worth waiting for.

Give me a holler if the ATV needs some TLC. I have been working in shops since before there were four wheelers.

I'm not much one for heat these days - my company has a plant in St George, UT and my first trip down there was in Aug. where I spent two days in a man basket installing wifi antennas and security cameras over a tin roof in 117 degree heat. Funny thing is I was a lifeguard all through HS & college and loved sitting out in the warm sun all day - but anymore I'll take the moderate temps, not to hot and not too cold.

The washer is limping along, and I've noticed it seems to stop the cycle when it adds water to the mix, so I'm thinking it may be a water supply issue. I'm going to test the supply line and remove the inlet solenoid & see if it needs cleaning. We have really hard water and ever with a softener I need to clean our sink screens and dishwasher arms every 6 months or so to keep things flowing. It would be beautiful if it only needs cleaning, because the replacement part is $260, and the internet says it almost always goes out with the control board which is another $380. For now if we catch it within 10 minutes or so of when it stops we can press go again and it will run for a while longer, so we're limping along. Definitely don't want to go through $20-30 in quarters a week either!

@TeeJ I'm relegated to using a laundromat. The building I live in is over 100 years old and has no place for a washer/dryer. I do 3 or 4 loads, occasionally five, every other week when I get back from work. Yes, it's expensive at $25 a month or more but then I figure I don't have to pay for any repairs or extra water and the laundromat is less than a block away. Not a huge deal to me...

That's a good point, not having to deal with the machines breaking would be nice... in college there was one close to my apartment that housed the laundromat on one side and had a bakery on the other. A couple of donuts every laundry day really sweetened the deal!

No, don't scuff. In fact I'm at the other extreme. I make almost no sound while walking normally. I've been startling people since I was a kid because they didn't hear me walk up next to them.

No, this a relatively new thing. Twice walking across an asphalt parking lot. Not a place I'd expect it to happen.

Maybe I'm losing my balance for a couple seconds and don't realize it. A weird blood pressure drop or increase that happens instantly and disappears just as quickly?

If this happens again... there's a problem.
This may sound strange, but you might want to talk to your doctor about a refefral to an ENT (Ear Nose Throat) specialist. It could be an inner ear issue. My mother had some damage (no idea how it happened) to her inner ear that affects her balance. She starts to fall over while walking because of it. She also has Tinnitus but that came after the balance problem. It could be something else as well, but its best to get things checked out to rule things out.

I'm currently trying to find good natural solutions to the flea problem. Got 30 acres surrounded by forest. Cows, deer, rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, possums, mice, rats, voles, & all sorts of furry creatures carrying fleas. I want something safe for cats & dogs that doesn't smell offensive to humans that I can spray around at least the front 5 acres and inside the house and maybe something to use on the cats to get rid of fleas. I have tried all sorts of drops and pills for them and it does not even last a week. I'd use peppermint oil but its toxic to cats. I'm hoping for something that doesn't contain manmade chemical pesticides and I'm still boycotting Hartz. Giving all of the pets baths is out of the question, unfortunately.

Any suggestions?

Haven't done a whole lot today. Woke up just before 5, had breakfast, read for a bit and then fell back to sleep in my chair. Slept in a bit longer than normal, annoyed my daughter to the point where she had to get up because she was too annoyed to roll over and go back to sleep. Walked up to the coffee shop and ran into my old pastor and his wife digging around in their storage unit. Had a nice little chat with them, then got my coffee and came home.

Now I'm planning my afternoon which is going to consist of either fishing at the lake, or hitting a bike trail with my daughter. Anything to get her away from her damn phone for a while...

@Peanut, I was going to mention the possible ENT connection, too. Inner ear issues cause balance problems that show up with a quick movement or change of elevation (such as sitting to standing). And it's not always readily apparent that it's an ear issue (doesn't "feel" like an ear issue).
I'm no doc, just someone who's had that problem.

Worked on the goose run today. They had cattle panels all around the run, and one of them slipped out yesterday, and then had a hard time getting back in. So I did the whole perimeter of cattle pannel with chicken wire. They are very sweet, have to come watch me work all morning, and making chipping noises. Then along comes our neighbor's mom bringing some food to their freezer in our outbuilding. We have two in there for two of our amish neighbors who don't have electricity. Those geese went nuts in their run, trying to protect me. It was hysterical.

Got home from a house sitting job last night. I am having my first day of no dogs at my house or at their house since July 1. I love the dogs, but I have had some business to take care of. I sold some things on my Etsy site, and needed to get them packed and sent. Done!

When I came home, I saw two young men, maybe around 10 years old, selling lemonade. Of course I support young people. Went to purchase lemonade, asked their names, because they must be my neighbors. Yes, they are. They are lucky to have a friend of the same age to do things with in the summer and live across the street from each other. I asked their names, and realized that I knew the father of one, who has a Welsh terrier who has tons of energy. He introduced himself, and once I heard his name, I asked if that was his father. Father is from South America, maybe Chile. Great people. Then I told them my first name, he inserted my last name. What? I have never met him before, but he knows my last name? Kid has great people skills!

Quad excavation day 2

Removed this pile and moved to back porch.

Still have some digging to do.

But it turns a new set of tires are required.

Getting quad running again just went up a bit. Thought it would need a carburetor. Nope

Thank you!

I may start a thread when that time comes. Not to share my knowledge but to invite feedback and suggestions. Internal combustion engines are not my strong point.

Went to bed early last night because I was really tired. Woke up feeling really cruddy, fatigued and achey with horrible headache. Think it's from all the dry weather and dust we've had the past few months. My sinuses have been filled with cotton since it started. Spending the day napping on the couch doing the bare minimum of taking care of the animals and watering. Hopefully this crud passes soon because I still have a long list to accomplish by the weekend.

Just found out via Facebook that one of my railroad brothers was shot and killed at his home in Las Vegas. Apparently it was a dispute between him and his neighbors. He was holding his two year old daughter in his arms at the time.

According to what I've seen, he was allegedly shot 5 times in the back. A shot also struck his little girl in the leg, but her injury is not life threatening.

RIP Rod. I know we didn't always get along when we worked together, but you'll always have my respect as a railroader. Highball, brother...

Thought about this last night... researched Meniere's syndrome because dad had it. But less than 5% of the cases have a genetic connection. And it almost never happens to people over 60... I'm pretty sure it's not memieres, which affects people for 20min to several hours.

This event is too quick, in fact I don't feel dizzy at all. I'm not ruling out a physical issue as a cause but I have no noticeable physical symptoms.

Funny... I woke up this morning wondering what else happened, my neck hurts, skinned my knee and my left collar bone hurts. Did I fall down again during the night and not remember it? 🤣

I did nothing today. A lady did come and take a look at my horse and donkey. She's interested in giving them a home. I don't want to let them go but it'd solve up coming family issues. One less thing to worry about and care for.

Why would you give away free food? Especially these days? Good words = BBQ, Fricassee, Rotisserie, Fried, Baked. . .

I woke up just after 2AM - grrr. We wake up about 4-4:30 anyways, but we couldn't open the windows since it didn't cool off last night and I think it was just too stuffy - even w/ AC.
Had to haul a load today. Got stopped for about 20 min. There was a man lift truck (big!) that went threw the guardrail. Looked like the driver was either texting, fell asleep, or ??? Didn't appear that he/she would have been hurt by looking at it unless it was a heartattack or such thing.
Pretty toasty this week so trying to stay cool.

NO TEXAS NOW!! ♥
GA is Texas without border bunnies and as much heat! its only 90 today. :p
PM me Teej, I think I can fix your washer, sounds like your lint box is plugged up.

@ABR & @Peanut I hope you both feel better soon!

@Spikedriver That's horrible! I'm so sorry. I'm glad the little girl is alright.

Thanks @Chaosdawn. I'm hoping it's just a one day thing. I did muster the energy to take the dumpster puppies for a short walk in the pasture while I had some water running. They both did really good and stayed with me. Both were curious about the cows but neither tried to chase them. I may decide to keep the female. I need another dog that can run the pastures with me without harassing the cows or horse. My female shepherd is coming up on 13 and she just doesn't have the stamina anymore and can't handle the heat. I feel bad for my male black mouth because I just cannot let him run off-leash at all so he has to stay at the house when we check cows. I've had him since he was 7 weeks old but from the very first day he wanted to chase anything that moved and he's just too stubborn and hardheaded to learn. Once he gets locked it's over, will even blow thru an e-collar on it's highest setting without a blink. He's about to turn 2 in August. I won't get rid of him though because he is an excellent guard dog and hiking buddy because he is so protective I don't worry going alone.
