Today I started on the big pile in the basement.

20220819_141130_HDR.jpg

After medicinal weed was legalized, inside grow operations shut down and I was more than happy to take the gear off their hands. Lights timers pumps ebb and flow and every type of soil amendment stuff one could imagine. It all got piled up until today.

Some things like bone meal went to the shed. The more esoteric stuff like bat guano and bird guano found a home in the greenhouse. But I uncovered two cloning stations.

20220819_154436_HDR.jpg

Turns out they needed some tender loving care but they both work. Can't beat free! Put the smaller one into operation for cloning grape vines. Only four cuttings for now. Room for 29 more.

I also went all Rambo on my fig tree taking cuttings and stuffing them in the pot with the other fig cuttings. Oh and dumped more root kill in the storm drains. We have rain forecasted and I have desire to dig up my storm drains again.

Now I am just relaxing before the granddaughters arive for a sleep over.

Behave!

Ben

Edit to add...

Total cost of greenhouse is still holding at about $25!

Enjoying the end of my 9 weeks rest from the job recuperating from a total knee replacement.
Doc cleared me for full duty/no restrictions and I'm back to work Monday.
I am a delivery driver for a nationwide auto parts company, working 3 days a week.
At 73 I wish I could be retired, but Social Security does not fund a comfortable life. And I'm getting a good check, having been making almost $50,000 a year. But damn Biden..........................................

Got two ice chests full of chillin whole chickens in the kitchen. And a bag of livers. I'll let them chill and the meat rest till Sunday, then I'll bag them and freeze most, some in pieces. Some I think I'll cook and freeze dry. I left 5 whole chickens and alot of livers at my favorite cousin's place and we'll have barbeque chicken and some liver and onions for Sunday dinner with everyone. Only took us an hour and a half to do 25 of them this morning....Not bad for a 70 something, a 60 something, a 40 something, and an 11 and 7 yr old who were very helpful, but mostly enjoyed playing with the chicken innards.
Stopped at the amish store to load up on ice for the ice chests on my way home, and they were clearing out the bushel 30lb boxes of fresh green beans for $10. So got box #2. I've been snapping beans and watching The Waltons this afternoon. Just about finished.

Just got done with another day of eating dust at work. It was very windy today and I got covered. I took a pic after I washed my hands when I got back to the hotel.

My wrist is my natural skin color. Lol! And the dark lines running from my elbow toward my hand are my veins! For some reason the dirt stuck to my skin over my veins, which I find to be very odd...Anyway, three more days of this crap and we should be done here. Sounds like we're going back to Ogallala or to North Platte again in a week...

I believe the last replacements we installed were "Harbor Breeze", they have been running non stop for years, except for the newest install: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Harbor-Bre...Ceiling-Fan-with-Light-Kit-5-Blade/1000195091
Thanks! I think that might be the brand my friend got that died quickly, but I might be mistaking it for Hunter brand. I have Evergo brand from Sears in the 1980s. All but one are still running. The one in my room won't seem to run and I don't know if it is the switch to it or what. I'm hoping I can get it working again. It's a 4-blade (I think 52") with gold stencils on the blades. They don't make them like this anymore. It was loud but still worked. LOL.

It uses Bisquick instead of crust. Very easy and fast to make. Mixes in blender.
Thanks! I shared the link with a friend who likes to bake. It sounds good!
Canning today! Aztec chicken soup in the canner, Asian plum sauce on deck. I started up a GF sourdough starter and it caught so fast that I had to rescue it this morning. I was expecting it to take five days and it only took two. Fingers crossed it’s salvageable and I don’t have to start over.
Ooh, what is Aztec chicken soup? Do you use a bread machine for the bread or do you bake it in the oven?

@rice paddy daddy I'm glad you're healed up but I hope they don't make you overdo it when you start back at work. People don't seem to get back what they paid in to Social Security & I hear the legislators want to raise the age to qualify yet again.

@Neb Good to see you're making more progress on cleaning. I really need to get off my behind and do more.

@Spikedriver I've had that happen where the dirt clings over the veins. Maybe because it sticks up more?

I had anal glaucoma today. Couldn't see my behind doing anything. I slept a good long time to recover from yesterday. Left knee doesn't like me today. Cleaned up a little bit in the kitchen, made some grilled cheese sandwiches for myself, and tried to install Windows 10 upgrade but it wouldn't work. Not sure why. Hopefully I can get it upgraded since Win7 is no longer supported and won't work with a lot of software.

Waiting for Mom to get up and demand food so we can go through the ritual of her refusing to communicate with me about what she wants while I get frustrated. LOL.

I thought I should post this as a warning for others about yellow jackets. I now have an accurate count on wasp stings. About 3pm I was stung 7 times by yellow jackets. Strange… about 30 minutes later I got a severe headache. I get bad ones often because of cfs, even have prescription pain meds on hand that I never take.

This headache was pretty bad, very sharp, about 6/10. But it was quick, happened in about 5min, lasted an hour and disappeared as quickly.

About 9pm I was stung again, by one honey bee and twice more by yellow jackets. Same drill on the headache but this one was worse and lasted longer. My meds were looking tempting….

I’ve never experienced this from stings. I’ve gotten multiple stings from honey bees several times but never a headache afterwards. I researched it, the Mayo clinic had a good write up. Headaches are a symptom of multiple stings. Still have a dull headache this morning.

These were bad… so heads up. Might better be prepared for such an event when there is no doctor. I just tinctured a plant for treating headaches, not ready yet but it will be in a couple weeks.
I've noticed the bees n yellow jackets have been extra angry n animated the last two days. I wonder it the solar storms is affecting them?

Some really crazy winds just started happening. With the fire going on just over the ridge east of me , it makes for some dangerous fire weather n behavior ...
Last night the authorities started evacuating a few areas ..could be alot more if this keeps up. The fire itself will add on to the wackadoodle winds n weather.
The wind is blowing in a few directions like it's being pushed down from above. I'm out in it n I'm being pushed about.
The other us a beautiful sunrise photo at work..

@zannej Aztec chicken soup is a chicken and corn soup with roasted tomatillos, poblanos, and jalapeños, and a hefty dose of lime juice. It smelled amazing while I was cooking it; can’t wait to see how it turned out when we pop a jar open.

I do all my bread by hand — I just like doing it. I am occasionally sad that gluten-free dough is usually more like batter and there’s little to no kneading involved. But at least I do get to bake, even if I’m having to learn a whole new set of baking skills. -shakes fist- I will master gluten-free pie crust someday!! (I had just mastered regular pie crust … oh well!)

@Hooch what a beautiful view you have, hope it stays that way.
@jishinsjourney Some are gluten sensitive and eat like they’re gluten intolerant, they lose weight, feel better. I tried to stay away from the carbs and be more gluten free, but it is hard! Nice photo, you look like a very dear friend of mine only she’s blonde and blue eyed.

@Patchouli It’s so hard. Gluten’s not an issue for me (my family’s Italian and owned a bakery in the past, we’d have all died long ago if it was! :D ), but my husband is diabetic and apparently gluten is what sets his blood sugar off! Who knew? Not us, until about nine months ago.

So on the bright side, he’s doing loads better and I’m very happy about that. On the more complicated side, gluten-free bread — “good” bread, not basic sandwich bread — is really hard to find. Baguettes? Focaccia? Sourdough? Hamburger buns? Fuggedaboudit. I can get bagels but they’re $8/package for 5! You’ve gotta be kidding me! So I’ve got plenty of baking projects to keep me busy for a while.

Thank you so much for the compliment on the photo! I was with a friend of mine from college that I hadn’t seen in at least ten years, and we were having a grand time. I guess it shows!

Inspired by Ben I think I'll have a clean-up today also, as most of the family are going out. Have a few bags of clothes that were on depop but no one is buying second-hand at the minute. I'm in two minds to take it to a charity store or hold out in case I need the money at Christmas. Dinner is in the slow cooker, and its hammering rain outside so might stick on the radio later, listen to the football and do some writing. I've a few knits to sew up also, enjoy your weekend, wherever you are!

@jishinsjourney glad your husband is doing so much better. I guess it’s still a challenge to feed a diabetic at times. We had changed our diets at one point because of my husband’s onset of diabetes and it helped so much to eliminate regular flour products, for me too. But then…it was too late anyway.
I work full time so I don’t get much baking done.
Fuggedaboudit. 😆 I use that word too.
I hope your breads freeze well.

Still working on my basement pantry and my jar reclamation project. Hopefully I’m gonna get to clean out my linen closet later that’s gotten away from me.

dad will be coming home from the cabin on Monday with at least a bushel of tomatoes from the Amish farm. Guess I’ll be making sauce soon. Which is good cause I’m down to only nine jars. That’s a little too close for comfort for me

Slept in..its a bit cooler today too. Getting motivated to take the dog for a nice walk, then fuel up truckie. Probably stop by the thrift store too.
I had a surprise today, my other turkey hen who has sat on two different sets of eggs this summer was off her nest this am with two little one in tow!
I'll get pics later. I'm so happy for her! They are in the nursery now n she is being a great mom so far. So I now have 4 turkeys chicks n one chicken chick. The chicken is a sweet little hen. She is interesting looking too. All black, beaked, eyes feathers feet , fleshy parts waddles n crop? Forgot what they are called. She has one little white spot at the very tip of both wings.
I know who her daddy is but momma? I have mostly black astrolops n mixes but everyone else has red fleshy parts ..the purebreds have dark eyes anyone mixed breed has red eyes. I have one astrolop amaracuna mix, one RI Red x astrolop mix n one light brahma x astrolop mix. Maybe that's her momma?

Walked first. Good thing. I would have talked myself out of it by now.
Went to Farmer's market and salvage grocery with DH. Nice little outing!
Came home, printed more labels and put away chocolate pears.
Will do pedicure with nail polish this evening and that's it. Wow! Rest. What a concept!

Another mostly slow week here, resting up on doctor's orders. All the new quail are laying now, so I've got eggs stacked to the sky. I'll have to pickle & can or dehydrate some. That also means I need to cull the excess males, so looks like quail is on the menu this week.

Started PT for the concussion this week. Not strenuous like other sessions I've done in the past, but all the neck stretching left me with one whopper of a headache that's still lingering. Oh well, no pain no gain - right?

Our grapes have again done OK with benevolent neglect. We have a bunch of champagne grapes that are absolutely delicious. Our other fruit is looking underwhelming this year, but that's OK. With life being a little crazy this fall we can feed what we grew to the chickens and stack some store bought cans...

My gods dude, I love your skyline! And not a restaurant or homeless hotel in sight either!

Woke up to the dog stomping over my head and putting a paw with claws directly in my ear. No idea why she felt the need to route over my head. It's raining and there are thunderstorms so my plans to do anything outside are awash. I need to grab more stuff from the store. Mom is napping. Brother is still asleep bc he worked 'til close last night. He goes in an hour earlier and works to close again tonight. So, I can't get him to help with anything.

Having a tired day today. This morning I did all the animals, got the fruit trees and garden watered, seedlings in the greenhouse watered, and then cleaned out and scrubbed the milkhouse room that the meat chickens were in. Finished by lunch, and glad that's all done. Made lunch and we went for a drive to the amish bulk store in the nearby town. Bought some cheese, used empty buckets, wheat berries, bay leaves, fry pies (ate those already), bulk hard to find candies. Husband wanted a soft serve ice cream cone so went thru the McDonald's drive thru in the bigger town. Weren't those cones a buck? Not anymore. $2.15 each. Surprised me. We are putting together a tv stand. Husband bought a new tv and it does not fit on our old stand.

I use an old wooden bookshelf unit as a TV stand for my 65" curved screen, it works great for my home theater! Pics to follow, but the second pic makes the TV look too far away from the leather couch, which is NOT the case... that's just my cheesy Canon cam adding its perspective, lol.

P.S. Don't mind the cat toys on the carpet in the hallway, we've been having a "play session" with the kittens, and the older cats even sat on the sidelines and watched, so I'm hoping that means progress in the cat & kitten introductions. ;)

Edit: I'm about to watch a Duke flick on DVD, so I'm outta here... London Broil and green salad later, lol.

I'm a girl...lol.. I love it too.

The view n solitude was the selling point to me. I'm about 10 miles from either town north or south n they are very small towns. Well Under 1000 souls..
The closest big box stores n bigger towns are 1.5 hrs away..n city is 2.5 hours.
I rarely go to either..on purpose.
Doesn't leave much for a dating scene but owell..I'm a bit of a loner anyways..always have been. City boys n me dont jive n my future mountain man is out there somewhere.

Here is that interesting black hen I have. Her ear holes show alittle red but that's it.
She is a really sweet hen too n this is her turkey chick sister. They are the same age mostly..one week apart. But they are growing up together with another turkey chick that is 3 weeks younger.
A pic of my other babies I got today.
Pics of some serious thunderstorms n clouds rolling in..cant wait!
