Two deer found their way into our backyard about 7 hours ago, and haven't found their way out yet. Of maybe they just like it here. They're munching on the crabapple trees. We have a six foot wooden fence which no doubt they could jump over, but maybe they're hesitant to do that if they can't see over the top. The Ring camera caught them strolling into the back yard through our south gate, which has been removed for repairs so it's wide open. But it's around the corner of the house from where they are now and not in view.
One has disappeared behind a large tree that comes to the ground so we haven't seen that one for a few hours. The other one is the guard it appears. He's (she's?) always out, but wary. Seems to be more interested in just watching us peeking out the door at it than afraid of us. But will run away if we move too fast. Didn't seem too worried about our cat. That cat is dumber than a stick. Didn't even see the deer, walked up to about ten feet from it (still didn't see it!), the deer was stomping his feet to scare the cat away, but the cat just blindly kept ambling along. Then it finally saw the deer and came slinking back inside in a low Corgy-style crawl. The deer was all proud of itself after that, kind of prancing around the yard. Then it laid down under the swingset, probably waiting for the stupid cat to come back. I was amazed at how long a deer's tail is when they stick it straight up (to intimidate the cat). The deer looked like a peacock with full plumage.
If these two guys don't manage to find their way out of the backyard by morning, I guess we'll call animal control or the wildlife department and ask how it is you go about helping a deer find it's way out (maybe they'll even come out and help them, who knows). I don't want to stress the poor things and have them injure themselves trying to get away.
