I moved a farm during covid.

Three semi trucks, two with 40 foot sea cans plus loaded down poop decks. The third had the car, a Massey tractor, a Dr.s buggy and a bazillion totes around and underneath everything. Even the insides of the car and tractor were stuffed.

Knowing what I know now, after the fact, I would have had three more semi's and kept all the farm machinery and second tractor. I lost big, including them with the farm sale.

The boy and I got to spend a few days together. We went down to Eureka Springs on the bike to a rally.

After doing a bunch of laundry this morning, I went out back to work on the propane grill. (The Traeger is all good, it was the propane grill that I worked on this time).

It's an old Weber. Got to be 25 years old. A "Genesis Silver C" is it's model designation. You should have seen the inside of the firebox. What a mess! So I got a heavy bladed paint scraper and a wire brush and went to town cleaning it. Replaced the three burner tubes. Replaced the five "flavorizer bars" (they just shield the burners really, but Weber gives them a fancy name). Replaced the three gas control knobs (we were down to only one still intact, and I was switching it from burner to burner). I still have some scrubbing of the accessory shelves to complete, but I gave up on that for today when it started raining. I also need to install a new piezo igniter, but for now I'm pretty used to using a long neck butane lighter to fire the thing up. I had already installed new grates in this grill a few years ago.

I've been meaning to fix up this grill for a while now. It's been on my "to be completed today" list for a couple of weeks. Finally got around to it. Wow, what an improvement in the grill. The process is a bit messy, but there's nothing difficult about rejuvenating an old grill. Replacing those old burners and flavorizer bars made a huge difference.

For steaks and other expensive meats, and for "fancy stuff" I use our Traeger grill. And the Traeger is the only way to go if you want to smoke a brisket or ribs. But for hamburgers, or things that I want to cook fast, I use the propane. The propane grill gets a lot hotter too. The Traeger maxes out at about 425 degrees. This propane Weber? More like 700 degrees with all burners on full blast. Preheat time on the Traeger is at least 20 minutes to get to 350. It's pretty slow. The propane Weber is really hot after only 5 minutes (its thermometer is broken, so I don't know exactly how hot unless I pull out my separate infrared thermometer).

I'm still exhausted. Went for curbside pickup order after noon, got mail, came home and washed dishes, cooked for Mom, and then rackted out. It was 94°F out there but it felt hotter. I was low on gas so I put seafoam (motor cleaner) in and then filled it up.
Yesterday I watched a video about easy-starters for AC so a generator can keep running when they turnon without choking out. Reduces the start up amps of the AC by over 70% (but it does depend on the model). Thinking of getting one but it will be over $400 with tax. We do have a setup for switching to generator power but last time we tried it the breakers tripped. Maybe AC easy start would prevent that. Don't know. One I saw can be accessed via bluetooth/phone, does diagnostics, and is a surge protector as well. Anyone heard of these?

Trying to get some daily stuff done on my computer. It rebooted without asking me-- stupid Windows 10 thing. Cleared most of my e-mail. I've been keeping it clear. Need to go put away leftovers. But juts really feeling tired.

Kept getting phonecalls while I was driving to Walmart. Mom's foot doctor trying to remind and confirm her appointment tomorrow. I called them and told them to use a different number but then got 3 more calls from their automated thing.

Today was a whirlwind...hardly home at all. Tomorrow busy, too. Starting the day with a doc appt for me. Did something to my leg last week, not sure what, but I've been gimping along and it's not getting better. So after animal chores, I'll go. Little granddaughter has swim lessons and sewing lessons, too.

People usually replace their grills, rather than replacing the parts. My neighbor was getting rid of his grill, and I took it and replaced some things. It worked well for a while, but then it became difficult to start it, and when it would finally start, it was a big whoosh and flames shooting out. It's gone now!

I initially looked at replacing the grill. I priced a new model - Weber brand, similar size, similar features - and it would have cost $1200.

What it cost me to repair the grill:

New burners: $31.99
New flavorizer bars: $37.99
New control knobs: $9.15 (for all three)
New grates: (purchased July 2019): $40.98
New piezo igniter (to be purchased soon): about $15

That's less than $150 total. And a significant savings compared to the cost of a new grill. The regulator and hoses are still working fine, don't leak, and aren't showing cracks or other signs of aging (by some miracle). But someday in the future those may need to be replaced. I think that's about $45.

but then it became difficult to start it, and when it would finally start, it was a big whoosh and flames shooting out

You probably just needed a new igniter. If the grill doesn't ignite on the first push of the igniter, gas will start to build up as you continue to push the non-working igniter button. Then when it finally manages to cough up a spark you've got a grill full of free gas and the ignition of that will give you a whoosh, or a whoosh+, or even a whoosh++. Better hope you never have a WHOOSH+++ ! That's why I always light my grill with my head far off to the side and low. I want to keep my eyebrows, as ugly as they are. Now, with me using a long neck lighter rather than an igniter (until I can replace the igniter) I don't have the gas build up problem. I insert the lighter, light it, THEN turn on the gas. Because of the open flame from the lighter, the gas lights instantly with no chance for a buildup. Back when my piezo igniter still worked, I would depress it no more than three times (quickly), and if the grill didn't light I would shut off the gas, leave the lit open, and walk away for a few minutes to allow any built up gas to disperse before trying again.

If your flames where shooting all over the place even after the grill was lit, you probably needed a new burner. Your old one was most likely corroded and had extra holes and cracks for gas to escape where it should have been escaping from.

Gearing up to be incredibly hot (for here) today- chores are pretty much done, its nearly 9am now. Have to finish a submission for a competition and wait until lunchtime, when my final results come out online. The two still in college here got theirs yesterday. Have a voucher for an Italian restaurant I was keeping to celebrate, but husband is flat out working, so its easier for him not to rush home get cleaned up etc to go out, so I'm collecting the food to bring home. Its giving rain on the weekend, and once it starts here it doesn't stop, so might be the last chance to sit out. He's planning going to a rally down south on the weekend, and next week him and the boys are away, so I'm planning a big clean up in preparation for my NY in-laws. It'll just be me and the girls, for a few days, so no cooking ! :D we'll live on eggs, tea and toast. Yesterday I made banana breads - want to start building up the freezers again- and flapjacks. Daughter was given a pack of caramel flavoured powder that you sprinkle on cereal etc, so through a scoop in, turned out tasty.

2 TNR cats to Uber today, then maybe cut the grass.
I finally mowed yesterday, but completely unlike Colorado, we have had rain almost every day and the grass was so wet. We are supposed to have rain again this afternoon. I just drove by a yard where they have their sprinkler going. It is not a sprinkler system, it is one of those sprinklers that goes back and forth and humans have to start and turn off.

Maybe they just fertilized and don't want to depend on getting enough rain. With the amount of rain we've been having here though, I would have gone with rain for fertilizer though. Just watch, and if it doesn't rain, THEN turn on the sprinkler. We've been having rain most days, but only a little bit as of late. Enough rain for fertilizer though. I haven't turned on my sprinkler system yet this year. Or my A/C either.

The regulator and hoses are still working fine, don't leak, and aren't showing cracks or other signs of aging (by some miracle).
p.s. - This could be because I never leave my grill pressurized. My shutdown procedure is to first turn off the tank valve, then turn off the burner control valves after the gas lines have depressurized. Even when pressurized, those grill gas lines are low pressure (they're on the low pressure side of the regulator). But still, 25 year old gas lines and regulator maybe should just be replaced regardless of them showing any visual defects or not. Obviously, any leaking would be a sure sign they need to be replaced.

The only problem I normally have with propane grills is the federal requirement that the tanks must now have some kind of float inside - a safety device. I think it is to prevent overfilling the tank? That's all well and good, until your float freezes up in the winter (grilling is year-round at my house!) and you can't get the grill to light or run well. So a lot of people disconnect the tank and drop it a few inches onto their deck to jar the float loose. Talk about defeating a safety device. Dropping a propane tank, even a few inches, can't exactly be deemed a safe procedure. Usually I just switch to my spare tank when my float freezes. It is rare for both floats to be frozen up at the same time. But I have indeed done the"drop fix" a couple of times in my life. 🤫

I've been extremely busy the last few months and been going through a lot of health issuesbut still hanging on. Thanks for asking. How are you doing?
I'm doing pretty good.
Have a few health issues too.
Got a couple of new grandchildren last month.
1 of each, boy and girl.

I found out Tuesday evening Estelle is going to be a big sister again.
This time it's her Mom and her big sister's Dad(big sister is 17 years old).
Estelle will be 6 at the end of the month.
And it's another BOY.
Oh, boy!
Guess who gets another coaster for Christmas.
I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count.
Yep, Granny.

I have gotten a lot of things done recently including changing the fluid in the transaxle for the lawn tractor. It seems better in reverse but I will have to wait until I mow the back field to see if it works in reverse when hot.

Then I turned to the shop because it was a disaster with no room to work on anything larger than a shoe box. I convinced my buddy to take home a big pile of stuff that has been taking up shelf space for the last 20 years. Then half filled a pick-up bed with stuff.

That gave me enough shelf space for the new mini milling machine, a spare transaxle with one a shelf left over.

With room to work I fabricated a frame for cages for the new raised bed.

See the garden 2023 thread for more info about the cage.

Estelle and I had an impromptu Granny's sleepover Tuesday night.
We went window shopping at Wal*Mart for birthday ideas.
We both had Happy Meals from McDonald's total cost for that was $5.68 for both meals.
Watched movies, ate popsicle.
Next morning got up she went to work with me.
Met the "Guys", had coffee with them.
We went out to breakfast(brunch).
She stole all the covers on the bed.
She was wearing out pretty soon.
I was supposed to take her back to her Mom's.
But her Dad's wife showed up demanding her.
Her Mom is pretty angry about the incident.
I bet her Dad's wife doesn't pull that stunt again.
Went to dinner over at her Dad's house, she was so excited because one of the "Guys" was there for dinner.
She kept calling him Mr. Mark as a show of respect.
I'm pooped.

Any good toys in the Happy Meals?

Been a rough few days. Got all the animal chores done but haven't had the ability to focus on anything for very long so other projects are on hold for the moment. Need to finalize the plans and location for the compost bin. Also need to start the design plans for the tractor for the meat birds in fall. Still need to finish getting things set up for my SOs horse to come home with me next week as well. Gotta call the vet tomorrow and get an appointment set for him to get checked over and his vaccines and coggins done. My horse needs to go back to the vet for a follow up on her last appointment. I don't think the Benadryl is helping so next option to try is steroids.
