So since it was warm yesterday, I finally opened the bedroom windows. That's when I noticed 2 large side to side cracks . How annoying! I hope this is fixable and we don't need to buy new windows. For now I put duct tape on it. I think they might have cracked when we had the cold weather, but not sure. I have heavy curtains in front of them to keep the cold out and it's usually dark when I am in there mostly so I didn't notice before
This place ....

Yesterday we spent a lot of time cleaning the barn, it was very bad . I think everything melted so it was worse than usual. One of the little goat bucks has diareah butt too. I will have to treat him if not better today
Did take the dogs for a walk up the mountain...and guess who showed up and joined us...one of the livestock dogs. So the fence is down somewhere also. She came right along and went into the house with the other dogs after we got back. I guess she wants to be a house dog too. Too bad, not her job, back in the barn she went
Tomorrow son has his court date for the speeding ticket, at 7 am in another country. He will probably have to leave here at 5
So year not starting exactly good. But it was to be expected. Bad stuff follows good stuff. We had a nice Christmas

The wife was not up to doing the layered dip for NYE, so we made it together last night... She is still sick but has some better times (hours not days). I will have to take off sick most of this week because I just can't leave her alone right not. I got my outdoor decorations down, the large tree is down but not dissembled yet. It's going to get to 60F today so I can work outside a bit.

Yesterday, I went to Church.
Came home and walked dogs.
Cooked 4# of blackeyed peas (previously soaked) with lots of veggies added and 3 types of seasoning meats.
Cooked burgers for lunch since beans would take until later in the day.
Cut up carrots for dog treats.
Paid bills.

Today, will walk first.
Laundry.
Take down Christmas decorations on porch.
Pressure can leftover beans.
Find and thaw chicken and burger for making dog food tomorrow.

Happy New Year all!!!

Animal chores, and I should be moving roosters. Poor hens are in a corner, too many roosters. They can go someplace else till I have a butcher day. Visiting mom this afternoon, and little granddaughter is invited to the neighbor's place to hang out with their daughters.

Today I'll work on the tractor and try to fix the hydraulic leak. I cleared a flat spot on the snow in front of the shop so I can crawl under and work on it. Yesterday I got the road mostly opened. Just a couple narrow spots that I'll work on today. Looks like it's going to be clear and sunny today. Temp is only 16 right now.

Sonya123, a solid "bird strike" can crack thin glass, I don't doubt that some of the cracked outer windows of my home resulted from bird strikes. I have those "storm windows" which are essentially two separate windows placed into one frame... similar to dual pane windows in the way they cut down heat loss or A/C cooling loss, but the glass used in these windows is rather thin. I occasionally hear daytime thumps as birds (mainly doves) strike our home... 😒

Light duty for me today, I managed to injure the Achilles Tendon in my right foot, or perhaps one of the lesser tendons or ligaments connected to it. Happened in the middle of the night, and I was stone cold sober... only had one beer yesterday afternoon. It's almost embarrassing to tell y'all how this injury occurred: the toilets in my home are the low kind, so low that sometimes it's difficult to get back on one's feet, aye? In all other respects, the toilets are wholly functional.

I've been meaning to install "grab rails" on the nearby walls, screwed directly into the studs underneath, but haven't done so because I've lagged on the painting of those bathrooms. So in the middle of the night, I went to take a p!ss... and when I'm half-asleep the way I was, I usually just sit down so I don't make a mess by spraying the whole nook where the toilet is situated in the master bathroom. So I sat down and handled my business, and afterward I rose to my feet...

Well, my heel must have been in the wrong position, and I think I may have "hyper-extended" the Achilles Tendon, or one of those lesser connected tendons or ligaments as seen in GRAY'S ANATOMY. Feels like the pain is to one side of the Achilles Tendon, round toward the inside of my foot. To make matters worse, it's cold and damp here with the rain, so that may be exacerbating the problem. So I'm on light duty today until the pain wears off, as it undoubtedly will...

I managed to hobble through some morning chores, and I foresee a hot bath with Epsom salts in my near future... but I don't wanna aggravate this injury, aye? Better to take it easy and do some reading, maybe watch some entertainment on TV today. Fortunately, I put the trash bin out yesterday afternoon, though I still have to schlep one small bag of trash to the bin, it has the latest round of cat dirt from the litter boxes so I want it outta here, lol. I'll use my hiking stick to do this. ;)

Funny thing, all the worst injuries to this body (and some of the lesser ones too), I've done myself, usually while drunk and careless, but this injury was due to my being half-asleep and lurching upward off that goldurned low toilet. These are the lowest toilets I've ever seen, I don't think they stand more than 15" or 16" off the deck in the bathrooms. Worst-case scenario, if grab rails fail to solve the problem, I'll buy one of those elevated toilet seats with the aluminum frame... :(

Me beloved & dear departed mum used to have one of those in her bathroom in Coronado, but of course I didn't keep it, though I DID keep her aluminum walker, which has already come in handy twice in the past six years. I reckon this is the cost of growing old, these ridiculous injuries which occur for the smallest reasons. I put some Tiger Balm on my heel and it feels a bit better, but that hot bath with Epsom salts sounds like the ticket... that should settle the injury's hash.

P.S. If all else fails, there's plenty of beer & homemade hard apple cider in the fridge, lol... and plenty of leftovers too, so no standing around in the kitchen while cooking today. That'll help, and I can tell the injury isn't TOO serious, just enough to make me hobble around like an old man, lol. In my latter years of hardcore small craft sailing, I'd feel that way after a brutal day at sea... all stiff and stove up later that evening and the next morning, lol.

Edit: Here's my trusty team of "medical advisors" working hard to get me patched up... their latest advice was for me to "SHADDAP, GRAB A BEER, AND LEAVE US ALONE!" 😷

@UrbanHunter hope your wife is feeling better
@Mountain trapper you guys have quite a bit of snow, looks like about the same amount we have around our road at the peak of when it was snowing, but it's been melting with all the rain into a slushy mess.
Working on designing our outdoor kitchen today, almost done with that. Next I'm going to dig the trench for the wire for the solar and then work on digging out the root cellar. Not sure what my husband will do while I'm doing that.

In the interest of science, I measured the cr@pper, and the porcelain only rises 14" off the hard deck or floor... the seat adds another inch, not counting the lid. I made the mistake of trying to elevate my foot on a couple of pillows, and now the entire ankle joint hurts, pffffffft. I took a hot bath with Epsom salts, now I'm gonna lie down and read a book... just get my weight off the joint, ya know? I dunno how I messed it up so badly just standing up over the toilet in the middle of the night, but it's sure giving me grief, lol. I had a beer earlier, but it was a root beer, next time I'll go with the real thing, or maybe even some of that hard cider... that'll knock the edge off this blasted ankle pain. 😒

With these older manufactured homes built in the '70s, the manufacturers often skimped by installing the smallest and cheapest fixtures, hence the tiny toilets. They're not quite plastic RV toilets, but they're about the same size... I'm gonna hafta install some grab rails in there pronto so this doesn't happen again. I suppose I can check the thrift shops and also the 'Restore' for those elevated toilet seats... I don't need the seat but the aluminum frame would be good for support while standing, 10-4? Even a wooden framework with arm rails would help, though it'd be bulkier than the aluminum models. Meh, I'll figure it out, but for now it's light duty... might try an ice pack soon if this pain doesn't ease. 🙁

Edit: I just had an idea, I have plenty of stout brackets or 'corner braces' left over from my windowsill project, maybe I can screw those directly into wall studs on either side of the toilet nook, then screw some wooden planks on top of the braces so I'd have "arm rails" on each side of the cr@pper. Anything to get some additional support while standing up from that low toilet in the master bathroom... the other toilet has a sink cabinet to one side, and the upper edge of a standard bathtub on the other, so that toilet isn't really a problem, it's just this low cr@pper near my bedroom that is a PITA (Pain In The Ankle, lol). Damn, this pain level is pretty high too, but I'm riding it out with no drugs, not even aspirin, though I have plenty of Bayer. Sometimes it's best to "feel the pain" to get an idea of how bad the injury really is, aye?

Day 2's task is cleaning the kitchen counters and sink area. That was done before the holidays. I guess I can work on finishing the holiday decor.

I will be cleaning out the fridge and all the holiday leftovers. Yeah. Gross.

Getting the house back to normal and decluttering the junk to get ready for the move in the fall. Exciting and overwhelming at the same time.

Urban i hope your wife gets to feeling better quickly.
Wingnut a pull rail would help. I hate short toilets. Seems like I'm falling before I get to them. Apply ice for 20 minutes every hour. Itlo help the pain and reduce inflammation. Hope you didn't tear something.
I ate some bad pork chops Friday night and haven't felt worth crap since. Today is a slight improvement. I haven't ate much of anything since. Feel pretty week. Wearing down quick trying to get stuff done in the basement.

Been a couple of miserable weather days so I've been hunkering down with a good book and hibernating a bit. Rain all day Saturday washed away all of our snow, but we've nearly got a foot back yesterday and today. Fortunately my boys are taking turns manning the shovel with me. This afternoon is catching up after being a lazy slob all weekend. Dishes done, last load of clothes in the washer and this tonight will be "movie laundry" folding 6 baskets worth while watching some westerns.

I'm working on plans for under counter spice storage.
I'll make a drop down box 2.5" thick by 10.5" deep by 32" long.
That should take care of the problem finding the spice we need without unloading the cabinet.
There's a lot of wasted vertical space that can be used for taller things like canisters.
While I'm at it I am going to make a custom fit divider for the silverware drawer and another one for the cooking utensils like spatulas and other long items.
I need to go to the lumber store but I'm going to wait till Friday when my wife has a Dr. appointment.
I priced a sheet of 1/2" cabinet grade birch plywood. $132. o_O
The last one I bought was $90.

Working on cleaning up supplies, filing papers, organizing fabric and other projects. Wonder every time why i don't work on my projects. Reminds me of my brother-in-law who says, "we're cleaning out the garage (or basement) to get rid of StUFF so we can go to yard sales and buy more StUFF." I don't think it is his idea.
I think I'll go work on a project.

Got the trim stained for second coat. Gonna let it sit on the saw horses to dry out a few days. Still very tacky after more than 24 hours. But making progress.
Also got my toolbox unloaded and in place. Didn't realize they changed the depth of the boxes since I bought my roll around. Top box is a good 10" deeper. So I cut so 3/4 lumber to go on the roll around and had to do fancy lever action to get them under the top box. That thing weights a couple hundred lbs empty. Only mashed one finger. So I'll call it a win.
Got all the Christmas boxes packed away in out storage closet.
Sat on the porch with wife and dogs for a while and smoked a nice Kentucky Fire cured stogie.
GOOD DAY TATER

Rain here, so I spent the afternoon cleaning out two boxes of everyones important papers...ours, moms, the kids stuff. Hauled junk out to the dumpster. Went to the bigger town to visit with mom for awhile. I was warned when I walked in that she was in the dining room eating ice cream and was in an awful mood. Husband and I started talking about old stories she would know and she lightened up. Little granddaughter spent the afternoon with the neighbor's girls, and when we went to pick her up, they begged that they should have dinner together....so the dad said he'd take them all to the burger place and bring her home afterwards. She'll love that. Padlocked one of our basements with out med supplies....saw in granddaughter's car that she took my tylenol arthritis stuff, and recently grandson has downed a whole bottle of cough syrup. And he continually raids my emergency candles and lighters. So oh well. Husband told her to give it back to me and I showed her that in the main bathroom med cabinet there is Excedrin, tylenol, motrin, and naproxin. She only took it because it's mine. So now there's a padlock. I'm sure she'll tell her therapist that I'm denying her the right to pain meds when she's on her period or something.

OMG, pic #2 is TOO CUTE! Sorry about your toilet injury!! Hope it heals (heels) fast so you can install taller commodes!;😉♥️

Amish,

Locking up the medicines from any age kid is nothing the social worker should be concerned about, especially with an addict in the house.

You are not denying them anything, you are simply controlling the amount consumed. That's in your job description.

Personally, I wouldn't be letting them have access to any of your storage, not just the meds. The food in the cupboard and refrigerator is all they have a right to.

Once they acknowledge to themselves that their time is running out for the freebies, they will clean you out given the chance.

Yep, you're right. The storage that they've had access to has the ready to eat stuff, like soups and ravioli. The soda pops and drink mixes, the paper products and cereals. Also the hygene and medical. So I debated moving the medical to the other locked area with the main storage (they don't have access to), but instead, just decided to lock it all down. There is plenty of food in the kitchen, but they don't ever eat here anyway. There is plenty of OTC standard stuff in the medicine cabinet that they can use, but nothing serious. I'm sure I won't be asked about the padlock because they don't talk to me. Ha.

Everyone was up early and the animals were fed so we could head to the city. Husband drove car last and just pulled in at the side as it was late, we usually reverse into the front of the house. Stuck the car in reverse and thought one of the dogs dishes was behind me due to the scrapping sound of metal. But nope. Something wrong. So now we are all dressed up and nowhere to go! Got the car down to my local garage and now googling to see what is available that I can afford. Maybe a push bike, lol. It's lashing rain too- lousy day.

Today, I awoke to a flashing alarm clock.. so we must have had a power outage.. anymore I'm surprised when we didn't have one. Today is a work day but the wife is still sick, so I will be taking leave..

Yesterday I saw the neighbor kid out trying to change a tire in PJs and flip flops... He was definitely floundering, so I reached in behind the seat of my truck and grabbed a 4 star lug wrench, went over and broke the nuts loose for him, he asked if he could use it to finish and put the tire back on once repaired. When he finished, he returned it and said thanks.... Living in a mixed neighborhood I think it is best to do what I can to make friends with those living close to me.. Bread on the water so to speak...

Well time to get moving, have a great day.

I've been working like crazy. By time Friday gets here, I will have worked 6 days--only upside is holiday pay for New Years and OT for about 10 hours this week. The other long time full-timer had put in his notice 3 weeks ago--got a job for more money and he gets to sit down. I don't blame him but I'm sure gonna miss him. Next week the other full timer will on vacation for 2 weeks. Still trying to find coverage for 6 shifts.

The largest apartment in our building will be empty tomorrow. Now I'll need to find someone to clean and freshen it up. Maybe have to paint. I'm hoping that the couple living upstairs will be moving into it. It's a difficult one to rent out because of it's large size. The two-bedroom ones are much easier.

I really think I need to just run away from home.

Seems like when things go wrong it just has to rain to top it all off!!☹️
